MSoft Where's my install option?
XEROXM3 | 9:58 AM on 02.06.2008 10 comments

First off I have an Xbox 360 Elite, so my issue doesn't apply to everybody or even a majority of 360 owners. After playing my friend's PS3 for the last week I've become a little envious of some of the console's features. But I'm not going to get into the Blu-ray, built in wifi, and such right now. I just want to bring up the PS3's ability to install games on the HDD. Now not everybody likes installing their games, but personally I don't mind starting an install and watching TV / use the computer while it installs. Anyways after playing games like Devil May Cry 4 and Uncharted, which pretty much have a seamless experience I find myself wanting. So I just wanted to say, why can't I install games on my 360 MSoft? Lord knows Mass Effect could have used it.

1) Until all 360s have HDs, MS will not allows the install option

2) Uncharted doesn't actually do a full install, it is actually laying down files it needs as it goes.

3) DMC4 install is required, which makes load times shorter, but on average only 3 seconds faster than the 360 without install. Cutscenes on both are still 4 seconds or higher.

In reality if this was an OPTION on the PS3, I'd be behind it. But right now it seems like Capcom is doing the "forced install" option. Lost Planet does the same on the PS3 apparently.

I'm not asking for full install, but honestly I'm sick of texture pop and long load times. Isn't there a way to make it optional?

We can't even get MS to stop holding the hands of people who don't buy a HDD and you want to install games to your HDD? You're getting ahead of yourself, man. The first thing that has to happen is MS needs to stop caring so much about the people who don't have HDDs. We can barely get developers to make games that require the HDD because of the people who don't have a HDD.

If I could full install my games on my PS3 and have no load times whatsoever I would be all over it.

Only people with the 120GB drive such as yourself could realistically do that on the 360. Those lesser mortals stuck with either no drive or with a 20gig drive would have major space issues. Sony on the other hand due to every SKU having a HDD and many of them more then 20 they have the space to afford this.

Just a note, there is at least one game that it is an option. Unreal Tournament 3 allows you to install if you feel the desire to reduce load times, but to just play off the disc if you don't want to install. So it is, of course, an option for the developers (at least on a technical level, I'm not sure if they need some sort of special permission from Sony).

lawl, the main reason the ps3 lets you install games is because the blueray drive runs at 3x(i think its this number. i know its low). the xbox runs at 12x.

mystery solved! if the ps3 didn't have the install feature you would have HORRIBLE load times.

Yeah... I loved Mass Effect, but if I could have installed some info on my HD to avoid the texture pop... That would have been nice.

Not that anyone still cares, but Penny Arcade just brought up this argument today. Am I psychic?

 about me

*Proud new owner of a PS3.*
Alright so currently I'm working with a PS3, DS, and Dreamcast. I'm not really a hardcore gamer I'm actually a niche gamer. I like my SRPGs from Nippon Ichi and Atlus, I play a lot of simple games like Prof. Layton and PSN games, and I'm not huge of FPS games. Last generation I was all about the PS2 for obvious reasons, but this time I swayed to the 360 for awhile because I doubted Sony. I no longer have those doubts though so life is swell.

Games I'm Playing:
Uncharted (PS3)
Advanced Wars: Days of Ruin (DS)
Picross (DS)

Games I want:
Disgaea 3 (PS3)
Street Fighter IV (PS3)
LittleBigPlanet (PS3)
Patapon (PSP)
MLB 08 The Show (PS3)
FF Tactics A2 (DS)
Metal Gear Solid 4 (PS3)
Crisis Core (PSP)
Resistance 2 (PS3)
Fallout 3 (PC)
Initial D: Extreme Stage (PS3)
Star Ocean: The First Departure (PSP)
GTA IV (PS3)
Killzone 2 (PS3)
