Nostaljourney is a retro gaming podcast that features an new cast every episode. Each episode is based on discussing a particular game or series, then finding people who are nostalgic for it and people who have never played it before. If need be we go so far as to donate all the necessary gaming hardware to the newcomers. We compare the experiences of the two groups to find out how well a game has really aged as well as discuss its history.

For younger community members it may be a chance to learn what gaming was like in the past. For older community members it may be a chance to discover what games are truly classic and what games are not. In general the show exists to evaluate and discuss the nature of nostalgia and for everyone in the community to get to know each other better. Because the show involves giving out free games, it only records once every couple of months.

Recent changes to the game plan will hopefully entail the show recording every 2 weeks.

Shadows of the Damned - Multiplatform
Alice: Madness Returns - Multiplatform
Dead Rising 2 - Multiplatform
Radiant Historia - Nintendo DS
Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks - Nintendo DS
Ace Attorney Investigations - Nintendo DS

Wryviews are my personal review series where I try to do things different from the norm by asking myself how well the game achieved its goal, instead of if I liked the game or not. Wryviews are a personal challenge to stay objective and identify who would enjoy a certain game, rather than complain about who wouldn't. I feel that being a good reviewer entails being able to identify each game's audience.

Mega Man and Bass - Gameboy Advance
Maken X - Dreamcast

Gemnalysis is a series where I hunt down lesser known or neglected games and make a case for playing them despite the fact that they're older. Instead of flat out reviewing these games I look at them from the perspective of a collector and go over the game's history, and special trivia it may have.

Boss Battle - Mark of the Wolves
Boss Battle + Final Match - King of Fighters 98

Fatal Impact is a series of community tournaments revolving around SNK fighters; rather, it was. I happen to host the tournaments, but only once in a blue moon when I have the free time. I accept any and all callers, though I am not an entrant. Instead I am a trainer who organizes my entrants and helps to improve their game while introducing them to new and lesser appreciated fighting games.

The Fatal Impact tournaments will likely not continue until SNK releases games with better netcode. With recent promises from Atlus, King of Fighters XIII is likely to become the next big Fatal Impact game.

King of Fighters 94
King of Fighters 95
King of Fighters 96
King of Fighters 97

The King of Fighters Love Letter is a series dedicated to the storyline and history of SNK fighting games. Many people don't know anything about SNK in general, and with King of Fighters XIII on its way I'm going to bring everyone up to speed on the story in the series thus far.

Now that King of Fighters XIII has an actual release date this series may continue beyond the first story arc (Orochi Saga), but it's difficult to find solid information on the series' backstory.

Podsumaki Episode 09: Mortal Kombat Special
Podsumaki is a fighting game podcast that I hosted on and organized. There was a lot of random smack talk but it was a fun show. Currently it's on hold and none of the hosts are sure if it will ever come back. Our last episode was our highlight, where we spoke with three of the best Mortal Kombat players in the US and discussed the Mortal Kombat community and the upcoming game. If you were to listen to any one episode of Podsumaki, I'd recommend it be this.

The Top Three Things "Gamers" Should Care About Less
Somebody on Call of Duty: Black Ops screamed at me for not being good enough at the game, even though I wasn't on his team. Thanks to that I decided to write an article on some of the biggest problems with the gaming community, mostly their inability to care about things that actually matter.

Tainted Beauty: The Death and Rebirth of a Genre
What we have here is an article revolving around the 2D fighting game genre, the path one must go through to become good at the games, and all the obstacles in the way of this that I feel eventually led to the temporary death of the genre prior to the release of games like Street Fighter IV and BlazBlue.

Wry Guides: Goozex Training Manual
Wry Guides are a series where I try to educate the people of the community by writing about something that I in particular know a lot about. More than anything else though, it's just me unleashing a bad pun upon the world.

Top 11 Dreamcast Games You Probably Didn't Play
In this article I recap my experience as a guy who loved the Dreamcast, because he grew up with it as one of his primary forms of entertainment. The games listed aren't the popular and trendy choices so much as the lesser played B-list and C-list games that only true Dreamcast veterans touched.

Hey, I liked it: Mega Man VII
Hey, I liked it was a series where I reflected on games that I'm fond of that weren't appreciated by many people. As opposed to Wryviews which are meant to be impartial, this was a much more personal series. This series might continue some day but I could really not think of a bigger black sheep game than Mega Man VII.

Wry's Dreamcast Homebrew Guide: Pre-Brewed
There was a time when I was extremely, extremely into my Dreamcast. I didn't just play tons of regular games that I found on sale, I also researched the wealth of bootleg Dreamcast programs. These days I'm a collector and I'm not concerned with unofficial software. I'm too busy playing games I actually own. Still I created a quick guide to some of the easiest and best programs available for the Dreamcast that can be used with no hassle.

Untapped potential: Stop breaking my balls
I suck at games: But not forever
My Expertise: The Grand Jackass of Obscurity
Nothing is sacred: Sequels
Groundhog Day: Can you feel the sunshine, Sonic?
I started writing about games roughly a year and a half ago, and since then my viewpoints and my writing style have changed. Destructoid's Monthly Musings were a good way for me to get started when I didn't have many article ideas. These are all the ones I wrote that were promoted to the front page. I'm not super proud of them anymore, but if you want to see my writings evolve a little bit you can compare these to my more recent articles.

Wry Community Letter: Where the hell are you people?
Mike Moran | 7:27 PM on 11.20.2009 27 comments

I sit and I stare at the new toy that I had just recently acquired: a view counter showing the number of people visiting my blogs. Saying that my eyebrow is raised would be an understatement. The lack of attention my writings have been getting is record breaking. I wonder to myself if perhaps it's my own fault. Maybe my articles just aren't that interesting, maybe my titles are misleading. Then again, maybe the website is just a wasteland. Hell, maybe it's both.

This is the part where I sigh and realize to myself that everyone is playing Modern Warfare, with the occasion sprinkle of Assassin's Creed and Left 4 Dead. Though I'm sure they're great games; this turn of events depresses me on so many levels. Why exactly is this happening? Modern Warfare 2 is without a doubt one of the most successful games ever made at this point, and yet the company that supports it is one of the most reviled in the industry. Is this game really so revolutionary that it makes everyone jump off their couch to go throw money at a company that supposedly just about everyone dislikes? I don't know. I never played either Modern Warfare. As a casual observer these games look stunningly similar. Is there some particular reason that nobody could have kept playing the original release?

Actually, I know a good chunk of the reason. I just went ahead and asked some of my customers. Their response, "Well all my friends are playing it." The people who don't even necessarily like these types of games are buying it out of a feeling of obligation. It seems nobody can escape this title. As an outsider I feel like part of a devastated civilization right now. Like I'm in an empty town from some Twilight Zone episode. When people aren't playing Modern Warfare they want to talk about it. Even the Monthly Musing topic right now was made because of this very game. I feel like quite the outsider.

As a person who occupies much of his time writing for this blog as a hobby, I question if I should continue or not right now. The quality of blog posts in general seems to have significantly dropped, and so has the amount of attention bestowed onto them. It very well could be me simply being jaded. I'm not necessarily angry about the lack of attention. For the most part I write for my own enjoyment. I don't write on popular subjects and expect a somewhat small response. I'm just disheartened that so many of the people I like to spend my down-time around on this site with are pretty much missing.

I could try to approach this with a business mentality, similar to the ones that Activision itself may use. I could purposely approach topics that would spark more interest. I could litter my blogs with images and make them significantly shorter to help catch more peoples' attention. I'm sure I could do a lot of things if I really wanted to get more attention. That's not really the point, though. More than anything else I'm just disheartened right now. I think I'll continue to write, but I won't be tossing anything out into the wild while nobody is here to read them. It feels rather pointless.

Man, even my precious forums are pretty dead. I'm gonna go enjoy some of my retro collection and keep in touch with the people from the site I can. I'll be waiting for the day when I can see some of you folks again. Catch you later.

I've been playing New Super Mario Bros. Wii almost non-stop, so that's why I've been distracted.

Don’t get disheartened, I’m sure it’s just a dry spell caused by the recent heap of big releases like you said.

I know I’ve been less active on the c-blogs lately, both in writing and reading, because I’ve still got about four games I’m not done with and I still want to get Assassins Creed 2.

Hey, I give you attention! Also, I think it's a bit early to say MW2 is the most successful game ever. It's sold really well so far, but after Modern Warfare 3 comes out, no one on the planet will ever buy it ever again (with the exception being the inevitable Wii port).

The Modern Warfare games are pretty much sports games, in that each update permanently replaces last years model. I'm sure that it wont be long before they're just called "Modern Warfare 2010" and "Modern Warfare 2011" and so forth.

Really, the whole online FPS genre is just virtual paintball.

Personally I've been playing a shit ton of games:

God of War Collection
Peggle ( Dear Lord I never played this game before and now I can't STOP. )
Trine
Resident Evil 2
and yes MW2.

But I still find time to read all the cblogs. I don't comment on all of them but they are read. As for my own blog output I've got several that are in a state of incomplete.

But lookit, I love writing cblogs and I could feasibly put one or two out every other day if I wanted to but I realized, for me, that lead to strained and less than worthy addition to this place. So I take my time, put the effort and try to deliver something that is either worth reading or generates conversation. Ultimately you have to please yourself before others.

It's not like I'm pissed off or anything, guys. I'm hardly blaming anyone for playing what they do, though the fact that this particular game is so overwhelmingly popular does miff me on several levels. As a guy with very niche tastes it kills me inside that a single game can steal the show so easily, let alone a sequel that to my untrained eye is simply an update to the game everyone had already been playing for 2 years.

Personally I've been playing way too much MAG lately to do as much reading or writing... and they just went and extended the beta! (and also trying to play the BFBC2 beta, Ratchet and Clank, Borderlands and Dragon Age!)

I will say that one of the reasons I haven't commented as much on your more recent blogs is very simply that I'm not much into fighting games... so I tend to skip or skim those ones. :(

It's been NSMB Wii for me, too. Between that and work, I've hardly been on Dtoid all week.

Anyway, chill out already. You're one of my favorite writers on the c-blogs.

I get it guys, everyone's playing stuff. I was just amazed at how many 3 sentence blogs we had, and how many good blogs had like no comments or faps. Like I said at the end here, I'm just gonna go play some games until people come back. I'm not upset.

I do thank everyone for trying to be supportive, though. I feel like a whiner now that people are doing that.

"Record-breaking?" Ohhh nononono...NOBODY'S blog around here is more ignored than mine, sir. It's the one true distinction I have, and I'm not going to give it up without a fight (which, if our training matches are any indication, you'll handily win, but I'll choose to ignore that scenario).

Anyways, as Jimbo says, just write what you feel is worth writing and whatever else happens happens - the quality of your content is the only thing you have total control over, so as long as you're making sure that's up to snuff then you're doing all you should be.

Between packing everything to move across state, finding a job and Dragon Age, time has been short as of late. Hopefully, next month will be a better month to peruse the community blogs in some kind of leisure.

I try to read a lot of non-MW2 related c-blogs and articles, but they generally don't exist. And I get what you mean about one paragraph posts getting more attention than a c-blog with actual substance. Go figure.

You read and commented on my blog earlier today, and I just wanted to say I much appreciate it. I just discovered this crazy place this summer and instantly liked it better than other sites because of the folks, and to me you seem like a model c-blog citizen.

I guess neither of us have any of the new releases to play, huh? So it goes.

@Prince: Thanks for the compliment. I try to pay attention to well written blogs. People deserve a little encouragement. And nope, though I did play a good chunk of Pac-Man 2 on SNES, which I actually rather liked.

We're playing games, stupid. :)
I haven't been visiting as often, I admit. Dtoiders play games sometimes, not much school left, (studying) other stuff. I'm slightly busy
It's just Dtoid downtime, or something. Kepp blogging. You're awesome. Also, play some games with us. It doesn't have to be MW2, ya hater.

Thanks, everyone.

I don't comment on stories on DTOID very often anymore.
I do however give most of them a gander none the less!

Since everyone is talking about what they're playing...

Well I think the 'dead-ness' of Dtoid lately is mainly due to what you said, people are playing games. You seem to be sad by the fact everyone is playing MW2 and they're not here on dtoid instead. Well let them play their games, just because they're not on dtoid shouldn't get you down in the dumps. Also even if everyone playing MW2 only stops to play it and talk about it on the internet, shouldn't get you down either. If you don't share their excitement, then you don't have to participate in the conversation. Just wait it out and let MW2 people talk about MW2, being an outsider isn't bad.0

Also, don't think that because majority of people are obsessed with MW2 means everyone is, there are still people 'outside' just like you, me for instance. I'm not playing MW2, nor do I really care about the game that much, I'm an outsider as well. But I'm not getting disheartened because others are obsessed with it, let them enjoy what they want to enjoy and you do the same. Like you said at the end of the blog, go enjoy your retro collection and keep in touch with fellow minded people, that's what I'm doing, enjoying replaying FEAR 2 on hard without slo-mo and keeping in touch with no one because I hate everyone else.

I not "skilled" with the "internet", so I don't know how to summon that small video clip of the fancy gentleman clapping enthusiastically, like you people can apparently pull from thin air. Nevertheless, if I could, I would here, re: your stance on MW2.

I've not had much time for Destructoid lately (I work retail, and traditionally things tend to pick up this time of year, you may have heard), but rest assured, you're delivering top-notch goods that I'm always happy to partake of when I'm in the neighborhood, so to speak.
