Picking a new phone is hard. I've been with Cingular (AT&T) for a few years, and eventually I just got tired of their shit. They have really bad customer service and my reception in my city is fucking infuriatingly bad. If they have the least dropped calls, I'd like to see the company with the worst.

I'd like someone to go crazy one day after too many dropped calls and kidnap an AT&T CEO and tell him to make a phone call to whoever he wants and just talk about whatever for a few minutes as they drive through Palos Verdes. If they make it through, he lives, if the call gets dropped, his explodes and the guy rapes his family.

Anyway, I'm looking at these choices below, but honestly they're all pretty much the same to me. If anyone has any preferences or knowledge they'd like to drop about different phones or companies to avoid, please do. Thanks!

Blackberry
Sidekick
iPhone
Helio Ocean

I have alltel; ive never had a problem with there service, and ive always had at least 3 bars. as for a phone, no idea D:
I do not recommend the iPhone. Yeah, it's cool looking and all, but that comes at a price. Right off the bat they limit data storage. And to top it off, there is ZERO support for 3rd party software development.

Also, you have to idea how much you will miss tactile-response-dialing (A.K.A.- "Number Buttons") until it's gone.
I should mention I live in California, just in case.

I've never heard of Alltel, is that in the some region as Nextel? Presumably nex to it?
I figure the iPhone won't be anything worthwhile until another 6 months or so. New shit always sucks (?!).
Forget the iPhone. There are already circulating rumors about an iPhone nano. Wait another year and a half and this iPhone will be at least 1/2 as cheap and most likely a more refined product.
Blackberrys seem to be the phone of choice for people who use it for business. Apparently it's very reliable and easy to use. So if you plan on using it for mostly (serious) business, I'd check it out.
I'm with Tiff. Wait on the iPhone. It's a 1st gen product, expensive, and rather large (width+height-wise, not thickness).

Have you thought about a Treo? I'd wait until Windows Mobile 6 is out to decide.
Riser, everyone has a Blackberry, which should tell me that that's the obvious choice.

Unfortunately, because everyone has one, I don't want it. I want to whip something out that people will be like "What the fuck is that?" Since I can't find a giant green dildo that doubles as a cell phone, I was thinking the Ocean, but that's not nearly as impressive as I'd hoped it would be.

There needs to be a Dtoid cell phone...
I have a friend that owns a Sidekick. He loves it and has it out constantly (which is annoying as fuck.) But that's all I know about it. So I guess the best advice I can offer is avoid the iPhone at all costs while picking something that suits your tastes (which is easily the most generic advice I have ever given out in my life time.)

But if you find a green dildo phone, let me know.
I'd have to go with the Ocean.
Uber, any reason why?
I have the Helio Ocean, and I love it. There, there's my input.
I have an old school blackberry (not the pearl) and it's a lean mean Gmail machine. I would rather give up my left nut than my blackberry.
I hear good things about the E70.
Personally, I'd hold the phones to your ear and feel them. If you normally hold them to your ear, they might as well not piss you off. The fun of fancy features often wears off in a week. Best to focus on the practical functionality and then wage the prices against the coolness factor.
Don't get an Ocean. Given that AMP'd Mobile just declared bankruptcy, all those cell customers are likely going to bail to some other "Pay as you go" provider like Helio. These companies lease their service from a larger provider. If the company folds, so do you...

iPhone? I thought you didn't want Cingular (The NEW AT&T!). The product is solid, and 3rd party will happen, it's just a matter of how long it takes to hack, but it'll come. As for limited space, how many of you guys have MORE than 8GB space on your damn phone? How much is enough? Jeez. I've got 4 on mine (Sony w810i) and I'm happy... It's barely half full.

If you're staying with Cingular, look at the Blackjack if you want a Blackberry, some people like it quite a bit.

I wouldn't get a sidekick, I had just as many problems with T-Mobile as some do with Cingular. T-Mobile does not exist if you leave the highway...

If you go to verizon, look at the Motorola Q. VERY nice phone. I would've gotten one, but verizon kept it exclusive somehow.
DVD, Helio isn't a pay as you go company.
And honestly, I've had the Helio service for 7 months and I've never had a single solitary problem with it.
Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll check some of those other phones out, but with the services you never can be sure until you find out the hard way...
dont get the iphone unless you want to spend half a grand on a typical stripped-down phone with a TOUCH SCREEN!

I hate apple
