Nintendo has always given me enjoyable consoles, with some kick-ass games and fairly innovative features. However, this generation, Nintendo has seemingly fallen by the wayside, and has lost it's appeal as a gaming machine, and now has a bunch of shovelware and games like WiiSports (which is still fun...), and WiiFit (haven't played it). now I don't blame Nintendo for using this un-exploited demographic, but I feel betrayed that they're leaving their original audience behind. In this editorial, I'll be discussing what would make the Nintendo more 'gamer friendly'.
I love my Wii. I play it almost every day (it's the only current gen console I own :(). That doesn't mean that when I look at the upcoming releases, I don't cringe a little and die inside a bit. More developers need to take some risks on the Wii with some really good, experimental titles. Don't get me wrong, I love me some Wii Sports, but I can only handle so much of it. I want more games of the same caliber of Resident Evil 4, Super Mario Galaxy, Zak and Wiki, and No More Heroes (there aren't many more). I want to play new, groundbreaking games on my Nintendo Console like I used to, not just listen to all of the querulous droning of 'ZOMG HALO ROXXX' and the Bros at my school that ask me if I like CoD4 and GTA. I've never really cared for those games, so I kinda just shrug these people off. I feel like one of those douchey art critics that doesn't like anything, but I guess that's just who I am.
On the topic of virtual console: Where the fuck is Earthbound/Super Mario RPG? Haven't those been at the top of the polls for 'What game do you want to see on Virtual Console' since the service was announced? I understand that Nintendo doesn't really
need anymore money for porting these games due to their
stellar hardware sales, but come on, whatever happened to your fanbase that you've
never cared about. They really ought to rethink this tactic of fucking their fans over by not giving us what games we want, even though they now have legions of casual-tennis-playing grandmas that bought their console, they don't buy software. The fans could coordinate a dreamcast-esque assassination with piracy, as I'm pretty sure that you can take VC games off of your system, and upload them to your computer for the bit torrent users for no cost( I haven't tried this, or even looked into it, so don't quote me).
WiiWare has potential, I think. A lot of independent developers (like our very own Lucbernard! :D) are getting games out there for the first time that a lot of people never would have known about unless they went to a gaming site (like Destructoid! ;)) and were very steeped in the indie-gaming scene. This is good, although, like we all hear Sterling say on Podtoid quite often, a lot of Indie games don't sell well
for a reason. This is because they suck. Not all, but most.
Another thing that's bothered me about this console generation so far is the connectivity of the DS to the Wii. The My Nintendo channel did
finally come out, yeah, and you can upload demos to your DS from your Wii, but other than that, there hasn't been as much amazing connectivity as I was imagining. Yeah, there's pokemon battle revolution or whatever it was called, but come on, Pokemon on consoles hasn't been that spectacular ever. Something that I've always wanted to do is play a mini-game or something on my DS that I could transfer back to the console version of the game and it would help me out there, be it in in-game currency or items or experience or something. But for that Nintendo/some ingenious developer would have to put it into their game, or make an R4-like apparatus, which I don't think Nintendo would be too keen on.
Anyway, I know this topic has been more or less beaten to death, but I've always been the 'Nintendo fan-boy'" among my friends, so I figured I'd express myself in my plumber-fetish here too.
As for Earthbound... yeah, what the hell? Nintendo seems to have gone out of their way to shaft that series outside of Japan. Even the playable demo content for Super Smash Bros. Brawl was removed in the NA version. On top of that we'll probably never see a release of Mother 3, either.
More developers really do need to venture into Wii territory.
I feel ya man.
Nice write up, and yeah, that guy really looks like Brushel.
Otherwise, though, I definitely agree. I own a Wii and a 360, and rarely touch the Wii... no software. Plus HD gaming deserves more credit than it gets. I'm not good at Halo but I own good players that use SDTVs...
I also think part of the problem is the stigma that the media/publishers have decided. No matter what Nintendo says, the things they make will always be for kids. I swear if they made nothing but M rated violent games, some developers would still be in their bubbles and make games for "teh kiddiez." Unless they change it wont matter.
People don't want to take risks anymore. It's not just with the Wii but with all three systems. Unless they feel it will sell them millions and cater to the lowest common denominator they won't make it. That's why there's so much shovelware on the Wii. But unlike the 360, the mass market has it and is willing to buy the shovelware.
WiiFit is awesome! You look stupid, it does not make sense and it will only help just a little to get into shape but all things aside once you step on it's hard to step off. I've played it, I love it!
The lack of good VC games is for a few reasons. The big issue is between the makers of the game and Nintendo but there are other reasons. Like most of these games never got a ESRB rating or need a new one and the new rating is not good. Things like Super Mario RPG had gambling and other bits that push the rating higher then they want, same deal with Earthbound. Don't worry tho, the games are coming! It is just going to take some time.
Well, hopefully like with the DS eventually game developers will catch on and give it the support it deserves. (Only time will tell.)
