Whenever I get out my DS basically anywhere I go, people ask me; 'what are you playing?', to which I casually respond 'Pokemon.'. This is usally met by outbursts of 'Wow, you're such a faggot!', 'Why the fuck are you playing that kids game?', and 'I'm never talking to you again.' I almost understand their position, but then I just shake my head and chuckle to myself. Every time I load up that cart on my DS, I get that feeling of nostalgia from when I was younger. Waiting for my mom to get out of the store while I waitied in the car, walking around with my mom in the mall, etc. I sink a lot of time into those games, and I love every minute of it.
One of the main reasons that I continue to play pokemon, not only because one of my other favorite series' from when I was a child (Final Fantasy) has been sucking in recent years, but for the strategy. Yes, I said strategy. Pokemon has one of the best turn-based combat systems out there, having pretty much every move type and status that you an think of, and they're all executed by cute little critters that you just can't ever get enough of! Also, what better way to cut your teeth for bigger, better RPGs? Pokemon teaches you the concepts and strategies for harder and more complex games that just throw the system at you. I'm pretty sure that I'm a better gamer because pokemon trained me for the more technical games.
I also continue to play pokemon because it's so damn portable. You can train your pokemon with little to no time while your waiting for class to start, the train, the bus, your friend to pick you up on the way to do something, etc. So I don't get why it's so 'childish' to play it. I guess the people that don't play pokemon just don't appreciate the simplicity and wholesome nature of the game. It's simple, fun, and steamlined. Dosen't that make a REALLY good game?
tl;dr, I'm still going to play pokemon. You can make fun of me and call me immature, but I'll just laugh and melt something's face off with Hyper Beam.
I expect to see this added to your RPG list in your profile now. You have been outed.
But honestly, once you really give the series an honest chance and let yourself immerse yourself in the world of Pokemon, you really begin to see it's not so simple and "kiddy" as you once thought.
The amount of strategy that goes into battling can trump a lot of other RPG's out there. Also, given the random factors of growth of each pokemon, and no 2 pokemon are really identical.
Personally, I love all the different types of pokemon in the games, and the sense of adventure and exploration you get from the series. Thats pretty much what keeps me coming back even though the premise of the games are always the same.
I don't know how many hours I spent with the red/blue versions. A good portion of my early teens without a doubt.
I loved how the games (at least recently) made it so that with some knowledge of what you were doing, you could make almost any combination of Pokemon a viable team. Nothing is more satisfying than taking out a friend's team of legendaries with standard grass-dwelling fare. Pokemon is one of the few franchises that actually got better as time went on.
You arent alone in your pokemon love dude. It is extremely popular, and the games, albeit a simple design, is truly a great and enjoyable game. People just associate Pokemon with the lame ass cartoon, so we get lumped in to that category as well. Just do as you have been and enjoy your pokemanz.
There is just something awesome about being able to capture and train hundreds of different monsters while adventuring around a world filled with secrets. Now if they make a SOM style game where you can play as the pokemon you select, and physically use it to battle. Phew boy, that would be so awesome.
Myself, I still love to play it, and playing online with friends and trading with anyone, is a neat addition to the series.
Also, next time I will defeat you.
Damn, now I want to play pokemon...
I've got Diamond on the DS and Ive got 447 Pokémon so far.
I haven't played it in a while though, I've been playing Pheonix Wright.
I completed Red, never got G/S went straight to Ruby and got about 3 5ths. My wifi doesnt work at uni, so i cant trade with people. I can only use the GTS, which means i cant trade for any pokemon i havent seen yet! =(
