Warning: heavy anti-American sentiment ahead. And yes, I'm an American myself, although at this time I'm quite ashamed to be so.

If you're wondering why I had to put that warning in there, well, read this article over at the Escapist:

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/79582-Survey-Shows-Americans-Want-Game-Laws

Some choice quotes from the article:

"51 percent (of those surveyed) believed the government should be regulating the actual content of the games."

"Even among gamers surveyed, 44 percent said the government should regulate mature content in games..."

And people wonder why politicians get away with wiping their asses with the Bill of Rights, passing laws like S-1959, a.k.a. the Home Grown Terrorism Bill. (Although that bill hasn't passed yet, it's still very fucking scary that it's being considered. It already passed the House of Representatives with a near-unanimous vote.)

People here are so much like sheep, stupid sheep at that. Not only will they believe anything the government tells them, but are willing to give up their freedoms in the name of so-called "security." And they're perfectly willing to endorse the oppression and removal of freedoms of others because of their fucking superiority complex, under the naive assumption that it "can't happen here."

Well, it's happening right fucking now. And I'm sick of it. I'm sick of this country and the people in it. I'm sick of all the fascist, genocidal (yes, genocidal) bullshit that is done in our names and that we so happily swallow. And I've fucking had it. I'm fucking sick of being associated with oppression. I'm fucking sick of being associated with this country's genocidal policies. I'm fucking sick of having my tax and consumption dollars support it. I'm fucking sick of my very existence supporting it.

Bullshit like this makes me want to kill myself, or someone else, maybe a lot of someone elses, I don't know. I'm not thinking straight. I hate my association with all this bullshit. I hate myself for being born an American citizen. I fucking hate my life because of it. I honestly don't know how much more I can take. I wish I could move out of this fucking country, but I don't have the time, money, or other resources to do so.

I'm sorry if I scared anyone with some of the threats in that last paragraph. It's just that I'm so angry and so depressed right now I can't think straight. I hope you can understand why.

we ( europeans ) have been trying to tell you for years that you guys suck, but you didn't want to listen...

based upon your last 2 paragraphs, i would suggest go all american with a nice school-shoot-out, give the gamers a reason to flame, the politicians a reason to actually go through with all this ( hell they basicly banned guns in belgium after an 18yo had killed 3 people...) AND get Dtoid listed as a 'terrorist'-website all in 1 go!

no seriously, I feel bad for anyone living in the USA ;-) You can come hide out in my country if you want, we've got really simple immigration-laws :-)

# IDEOLOGICALLY BASED VIOLENCE- The term `ideologically based violence' means the use, planned use, or threatened use of force or violence by a group or individual to promote the group or individual's political, religious, or social beliefs.

Mistic - Trust me, I'd love to, but as I mentioned in my blog post, I don't have the money, connections, or time to do so. And I'm really depressed because of it. You got the cash and connections? Hey, if you do, and you're willing to pony them up to get me out of here, I just might take you up on it...just be sure to have an NTSC TV ready so I can bring my game consoles along. :)

Eschatos - KMFDM IS GOD.

What pisses me off is the call for Government intervention, when that is unconstitutional. The stupid thing is, the companies that distribute the games dont give a shit who buys them, as long as they make money. They're gonna end up screwing us all over because they are too greedy to self regulate who games are sold to. The film industry is not government controlled, and it does an adequate job "censoring" itself (I said adequate, not proper or sane). This would be an easy fix if places like walmart and gamestop were totally consistent in who they sold they're games to.

grrrr

so why haven't we just killed the government by now? I mean seriously.

I really hate being an american because half of us are just too stupid to realize common sense. Let alone running around in other countries acting if we're a higher being than others. I don't blame other countries for hating America as much as they probably should. Most of us are conceded asses who gloat on purpose.

I do think that there's nothing inherently wrong with legally enforcing game ratings, as is done with movies. I think that once a child can't buy a rated M or AO game, maybe the content will start loosening up a bit.

The downside, though, of letting the government intervene in game ratings is that, as is the case with the BBFC in England, they can start banning things even if they are out of the hands of children.

Koobert - What got me so pissed off about Americans wasn't their clamoring for enforcement of game ratings. Hell, I'd be for that.

What got me so angry was the clamoring for the regulation of content. The Escapist article I linked to here points to a survey where a majority of the Americans surveyed wanted the very content of games to be regulated. That's why I'm so angry. Enforce the ratings all you want, but when you mess with the very content of games, I'm sorry, but that's just plain un-Constitutional.

God I love my country right now... </sarcasm>

We've pretty much reached the cataclysm event horizon already. There's nothing we can do to avert it, so don't worry. In 50 years America will be a fond memory.

Wow...

Just... wow.

First off, you're basing your opinion of 300 million people on the answers of a couple hundred or so of those people (at most) to vaguely worded questions. If you ask anyone if they think gaming should be regulated, the first thing that comes to mind are game ratings. That's probably what most of these people had in mind when answering the question, as opposed to censorship.

Secondly: Did you even read that bill that you're citing? It isn't scary at all. It's almost entirely about studying Homegrown Terrorism and Violent Radicalization. The part about acting against it even includes a section on preserving civil liberties.

How about you stop bitching about things you obviously don't quite understand, and stop acting like an ignorant, ill-informed malcontent. Or at least put it on your LiveJournal, because it's ridiculous to subject us to your ravings here on Destructoid.

This is the very reason I stopped going on digg. Not that I don't agree with you, I agree 99%, but I found myslef 100X happier and less depressed when I stopped thinking about these things,. I understand andrealize what your saying, but my personal strategy is not to care. Flame me, attack me, criticize me, I don't care. It works. People claim they want to know 'the whole truth', when, in reality, they don't. Because when you do, it just makes you angry and depressed. Yeah, America is turning into a worse and worse place to live, but nothing that has effected me greatly so far. When somethign DOES happen however, I'll deal with it my own way. Right now, I'm perfectly happy staying in the dark.

liam2015 - Yeah, I usually follow the same sort of strategy myself. I usually try to keep out of such issues because, well, as you just saw it made me angry and depressed at the level you just witnessed, and my post here probably scared some people. However, sometimes it comes out of nowhere and I can't avoid it. One example is when it's game related, since I follow gaming news - usually I figure gaming news to be safe to follow, but, well, what I found out today proved to be an exception. And the part about S-1959 got piped directly into my Inbox, because of a mailing list I joined, so it's not like I could easily avoid that. (Maybe I should unsubscribe from said mailing list.)

But yeah, I do try to stay away from such things for the most part. It's just that some things, well, kinda get shoved in my face.

I agree with some of your outrage, if not entirely with your message.
Also I'd have to disagree with your use of the word genocide, which I believe is a word that is tossed around all too easily nowadays.
