Do you want to be a Golden Robot?
WastelandTraveler | 12:15 PM on 09.02.2009 13 comments

After reading a comment in one of the front page news posts about destructoid, someone made said that instead of making dtoid exclusively closed, that they should offer a premium membership that includes a free tshirt, special forums, etc. Well.. I thought about this for a second and then I began to build off of it, because I honestly thought it was a cool Idea. I know myself and maybe several other older veterans would jump on this in a heart beat.. but what else could be brought to the table to get someone interested?

Well lets see what we could offer to a Golden Robot..
- free exclusive t-shirt
- special forum section
- a badge of some kind that lets them stand out
- possibly exclusive store items
- personal blog page with podcast hosting
- Ad free destructoid

What do you get if you dont want to be a Golden Robot?
The same thing you get currently with destructoid. You will still be able to post blogs, still be able to vote blogs, post on forums, chat, etc.. no restriction of what any user currently has right now! The Golden Robot is for those who want to help out destructoid and get some extra little things on the side :P

Now when I started thinking about stuff to give a Golden Robot, I eventually came to the conclusion of the last items. Where if you were a Golden Robot, you could have your own customized blog page with a custom banner built by a dtoid artist, along with the ability to change the background color & font color scheme of your page and maybe even implement some CSS later on in the future. But on top of that, you will have a podcast section and an about me page as well. The About Me page allows those, if they wish, to write a more extensive bio and 'intro' about themselves for others to see. And the podcast hosting is for those like the drunkcast, and failcast people who start their own little groups. I think something like this would be cool for them because then we would have more recognizable destructoid community created content.

Now I know destructoid is nowhere near the size of IGN and Gamespy to be able to push this kind of system in.. but I'm bored, and this is what you guys get from me when I'm bored :P so enjoy!

Is this post awesome? Vote it up!

The only thing that worries me about an idea like this is that it would discourage new members and hurt the growth of the site in the long run, which is the last thing that Destructoid wants to do right now. But I know I'd be willing to do it.

How would it discourage new members? Its still a free site to sign up on and post blogs and post on the forums. The premium membership would just be for those that want extra features.

I think that a lot of potential signups look at a site that has a membership and say "Hmm, I don't know if I want to commit to that," and over time, they just feel like they're missing out. That's a main reason that I stopped visiting IGN so long ago: once they started making a lot of their content "pay only" I started feeling like the site just wasn't worth it anymore. I've felt the same about other sites that have similar models.

Of course, I know what you're describing is a lot tamer than that, being all about extras rather than restricting content. But even the word "membership" can scare some people away, and, yeah, it's their own fault for not realizing all of the awesome stuff the site would still offer, but there's still the potential there.

Yeah, what I'm talking about here is a worst case scenario. It's possible that none of it would happen at all. But there's also the chance that it would. It's not a reason to say "Oh god bad idea don't do it" but it's something to keep in mind.

I agree with them all minus the ad-free part, that way I dunno how Dtoid would be making as much money as it is now...

What Naim Master said.

Shit better be damn pricey to justify the things you listed. Shirts aren't that cheap, Podcast hosting costs money, and special forums segregate members.

Still, it's definitely a nice pipedream. I like it.

I understand what you are saying Kauza :), and I do agree the IGN/GSpy model is rather discouraging, I probably should have made it more clear in the post but this membership idea would just be a one time payment type of thing (more like SA than anything else), no monthly subscription unless it was needed for something like 'podcast hosting'.

I can't say I like this idea. Destructoid is great precisely because of its lack of a tier system, and this setup just smacks of elitism. Attracting and welcoming new users is part of what makes this website so great, and waving a golden robot in their faces isn't the way to do that.

The site needs to stay free for sake of member increase.

Screw Elitism.

That being said.
If I has a golden name and a badge that says "VALUE MY WORTHLESS OPINION BECAUSE I GAVE DESTRUCTOID SOME MONEY!" I probably would do it.

Those would be cool things to offer, but the readership has grown like 30% from last year due to the philosophy of offering all-inclusive access to everyone, so I don't know that there's much incentive for the staff to change their strategy.

I'm all for supporting Dtoid and would be happy to give money, but even with something as benign as what you're proposing you still divvy up the community into haves and have-nots.

Interesting idea, regardless.

Dtoid is always balancing on the edge of elitism as it is. Adding some way to differentiate certain members is a really bad idea. Just look at Kotaku - their recently revamped system puts everyone's comments in a gray font unless they have a star (they get regular black text), and by default gray comments are collapsed. It makes me feel like the non-starred commenters aren't "important," and if they want to be really paid attention to, they have to say something to impress a starred user to get promoted just that once. I'm not saying Dtoid's system would be that bad, but that's what I think of when I think of elite community members.

Most of this stuff seems entirely unnecessary and pretty superfluous. The cost of a "membership" would likely cover the cost of a t-shirt, a special forum section for golden roboteers is akin to already-frequent forum members chatting in IRC or knowing eachother's gamertags or visiting the threads they already (and would likely continue to) frequent, exclusive store items would only limit the sale of quality merchandise, personal blog pages are already offered and podcast hosting isn't that hard to come by, and I already find Destructoid to be fairly ad savvy as it is; they don't bother me one bit.

If I could support DToid on a more personal level I would leap at the opportunity. Don't worry about any extra features, but no ads would be worth a lot to me. If it added a golder star/"sweet" or whatever next to my commenting name it would be amazing. Veterans know who's here for the love of games and who has other reasons, but it can't hurt to be able to say "Hey, we're willing to pay a bit more to make Destructoid a better place, and we're proud of it."
