Xbox360 takes a bite out of Final Fantasy 13.
Volomon | 7:26 PM on 08.02.2009 29 comments

Final Fantasy 13, has been changed to better resemble the build for the Xbox360 across the two platforms, PS3 and Xbox360. I didn't believe this was going to happen till just now. I was hoping that Square Enix would separate the two by allowing the PS3 version to just use the engine as it was. However, I guess it was to much to hope for. Almost all crossplatform games try to closely match the two versions of a game such as Call of Duty 4. Sometimes even with the PS3 suffering when a developer just doesn't care enough. However this time PS3 was the front platform with most of the major work on the Final Fantasy 13 being done up to this point on the PS3. To turn around and do this?

Previous Build on PS3

I'm fairly disappointed in SquareEnix, maybe I should be more disappointed in Sony not bribing them. It's truly a travesty to artists everywhere to have to churn out a WORSE product than they were capable of.

Current Build

That focus crap that the Xbox uses is half the reason I don't own one. Anyway what do you think about this? Are you still going to buy it if you were aiming for the PS3 version?

Source: http://www.uffsite.net/news/232/ff13-graphics-changes-in-action.html

Edit: Edited slightly for clarity. Also for those saying theres no proof, it's just something common sense should provide. The previous build as in the picture was what it looked like up until now. Previously it was PS3 exclusive. It has only changed since after the Xbox360 was added. I imagine this is because of the limited disc space(HDD) on the average Xbox and the limited space on a DVD. It looks like they literally cut the polygons by half (to put it mildly theres other stuff, shadow, physics of the waves), reducing the amount of discs needed. This is what every PS3 owner was worried about.

& So begins the Sh*t Storm of Controversy!

I see what you're saying. If this (Second Screen) turns out to be the final PS3 Product... What the hell are they wasting their time for. (Square Enix).

The only thing i can think of. Is cutting down the amount of Multiple 360 Discs it would be cut onto?

Thanks for this tidbit Volomon.

Perhaps it would be good if you explained what you were talking about, though I think I got the gist. In any case, I'm going to await confirmation. Comments in the article you cited seem to indicate that the article is not correct, in which case you're getting upset over a situation that may not even exist.

You were going to buy 13 in the first place?

BUHAHAHAHAHAHOHWOW.

13 is old news, It's all about 14. Hell, when TGS comes out, it'll be all about XV. That shit is gunna be so choice.

The first picture looks like the CG models. The second, which I'm assuming you mean to point out is the 360 version looks like the character models featured in the PS3 demo.

Where are you coming up with this? Your posted source only said that one screenshot was from an earlier build and one was from a later build. There is absolutely no proof that this is the result of downgrading to the 360. Your own source suggests that the earlier screenshot was running on the Crystal Tools PC engine or was doctored, both of which are entirely possible.

And not to mention the game has yet to undergo optimization, which will probably clear up resolution problems like this.

I'm no big fan of Microsoft. There are plenty of ways to bash those greedy bastards. This isn't one of them-or at least it won't be until there is irrefutable proof that Square deliberately reduced graphical quality for the sake of the 360. And if it satisfies your ego, I can safely promise you that the PS3 version will sell much much better, which is one step back towards Sony exclusivity. (if that isn't really a word then I just invented it!)

I really couldn't give a bigger shit. I am so sick and tired if Squeenix games. This game looked bad and still looks bad. I will not be buying it. Front Mission Evolved, however...

"That focus crap that the Xbox uses is half the reason I don't own one."

Are you talking about the depth of field effect?

If so thats a pretty standard effect used on quite a few PS3/360 titles and im sure the wii uses it here and there too.

perhaps its just a case of the screenshots that were initially released being doctored by Squenix to make the game look better than it really is.

I could care less until I actually get the game in my hands, so I can tell what it looks like in motion.

If (if)this is true thats bullshit, I'm all for games coming out on all platforms but if one can outdo the other let them sort that shit thats MS's problem not mine.I own all consoles so I can get the not gimped version not get stuck with it regardless.

Enix(with atlus and others around) is already on the verge of being marked as a has been and in alot of peoples eyes this is thier last chance so they better make at this game memorable and that means taking advantage of everything they have got, so if this is true this game just got off to a bad start already and it doesn't even have a release date.

@flabzilla It is a standard effect up to a point, sometimes it is over used. For instance if you played Conan (crappy game) and looked into the mountains (background) of the level. You will see the entire background blurred. There no specific focus it's just to lower the resolution of the back ground for more power.

There a lot of games that overuse the "BLUR" theres a difference between just using the blur mechanic to improve a focus. It's usually placed over high res textures. However the Blur as in the above is the texture reduced in size/quality. Then on top of that blurred to further reduce the strain on the system.

@Flabzilla Ya that was one of my added remarks I should have put PS3/Xbox360 since apparently there running a PC version? I haven't been following the entire development up until now.

I've seen these pictures before. But in that article they were talking about HD vs SD televisions. I guess somebody thought it was funny to mention that ongoing 360 vs PS3 bullshit.

i don't doubt it. i still remember how the original xbox ports looked better than the ps2 port. why isn't that like that now? fuck being the same on both fronts, developers are so goddam, worried about any little thing these days. i bet they'll cut the goddam game in half now just so the 360 won't have 5 discs. fuck square, they've fallen from grace.

Uhhh....Dude, read the article. What they're saying sort of makes sense. Perhaps the earlier builds we saw were running on a PC and not yet optimized for the consoles they were being developed for?

Could just be how the game really ended up looking.

There really isn't any proof.

MGS4 looked better in it's earlier builds. They degraded the graphics to ensure a better frame-rate. Konami said that they had to bring down their expectations to match the capabilities of the console.

This smacks of that all over.

It's still beautiful though.

"That focus crap that the Xbox uses is half the reason I don't own one. "

That's just a matter of opinion. Out of the two screenshots i prefer the latter, it looks less 'GAMEy'.

Another example: I thought Mass Effect was way nicer with blur on then without. If they downgrade the graphics and add filters/blur as a stylistic choice (or to help it chug along better) then i'm cool with that.

@THETOILETDUCK: Lol! A tad harsh though. :)

I'm not sure if this has already been said but the original image was probably rendered using the Crystal Tools engine on PC.

I really don't think it has anything to do with the PS3 or 360. You could tell the subtle graphics difference between the two versions when they were demonstrated at E3. I don't actually own a PS3 but it will no doubt look better on one.

Anyway, since when were games all about the graphics? I just hope it has a decent story! :)
