MW2: Famous for Nothing?
Volomon | 12:01 PM on 11.14.2009 12 comments

This is going to be a different type of post, one that doesn't praise Infinity Ward for everything they do. No instead this is a critical review of the multiplayer gameplay. Namely some things that came from IW's mouth that are poorly implemented or purely just wrong, things that are in the game that lends itself to the Hollywood era of IW's continue strive against Treyarch.

First off how many people are famous for nothing? Ok, maybe one or two. Titles and Emblems the new Bling Bling of MW2, things that are suppose to make you famous as they say. So many issues with "we want you to be famous", nearly moronic things, that I just have to point out. These titles are unlocked for....I don't know, and these emblems are unlocked for...I don't know, what I do know however is that their intention was to allow players to customize an in game title/emblem which goes with your name and when you kill someone they get to see how great you are, of course, what your great for is another question. How do you have so many things to "show off" and have no reason for the titles or emblems, with many titles labeled "OMFG" or "Get to the Choppa" how is anyone going to know you killed 25 guys in a row to get "OMFG" (actually I have no idea what this is for, and that's my point).

As Wolverine best said it he's the best at what he does, what he does of course as many writers joke changes constantly because he's best at whatever he says he is, and it's never really been made clear what he's great at. Most assume it's at kicking butt and taking names however, but we will never know. I fear the same can be said for Emblems and Titles because despite most likely a list becoming available online, the likely hood of every person online coming across this info is pretty slim. So I ask, who's famous when no one knows what your famous for?

Many of us long time veterans of IW considered many of the aspects that Treyarch added to the gameplay as gimmickry, in fact many didn't play it or played in the long wait for the master piece that would come from IW. So what's IW's response? Increased gimmickry, maybe not as badly as Treyarch's attempt to one up IW with zombies, flamethrowers, and vehicles. At least IW ATTEMPTS to stay true to the MW series. The problem here isn't all the fancy Killstreaks or Deathstreaks. It's again the lack of thought to the great quote "we want you to be famous", how can you be famous when even in Search and Destroy anyone can easily achieve any killstreak by landing a care package with a AC130 or some other random killstreak. Many counter by saying if he got the 3 or 4 kills necessary to get the care package he deserves it. However I think having an AC130 at the start of a round is kind of unbalancing. Not only that but in MW1 you had to kill the entire team to get a bombing run, now that was stellar skill. Not only because of this feat but because it had to be accomplished in one round of gameplay. In MW2 they have allowed you to carry on your killstreak through-out the game. I personally believe the gameplay for S&D is utterly unbalanced.

They took out Juggernaut, ironically for balance, then replaced it with Predator Missiles and Care Packages.

It has become less about skill and more about the gimmicks. In fact the lack of thought has increased the amount of camping in all modes. These killstreaks have increased this incredibly and honestly I blame no one from attempting to get the nuke to land.

In the end I believe this is why they didn't have the beta, there is so many issues with what is here, that perhaps they had no chance to go back and do anything if they had a beta. Instead of allowing time to balance and tweak they went with what they had. Gimmicks > Skill and Competition. The reason sequel's rarely turn out good is because the creator doesn't even know why the first one was so good. It was grounded in reality, something that MW2 stretches, it was grounded in fair competition, something MW2 randomizes for luck and chance.

[Even though I voice such opinions, many of which is not in this article, I would rate this game a 9.1 it's no longer the great skill game and would easily be replaced by anything else that comes along in that department. However I will play the living daylights out of this game none the less.]

My thoughts exactly! I really hate games that have so many damn guns and gimmicks that it's hard to maintain a skill based game. I haven't tried the online play and will give it a go, but judging by the previous games I'll love the graphics - and hate the gameplay. I hope they have a stripped version of online play available with no gimmicks - no perks, no killstreaks, no care packages... no crap.

@Elsa

They did, it was called MW for PC played on a skill based dedicated server. Now I think you see why PC players are pissed about the whole MW2 shit. If MW2 had dedicated servers and mods we could play the game exactly how you just described.

Chronos... I really don't understand why IW is trying to neuter the mod community... that is definitely one of the best aspects to PC gaming and a smart dev will simply see what the modders are doing to get some decent ideas! :(

Personally I love the online. I think its better than the first and more balanced then the first. I like the care package idea, it adds a little bit of luck within a match. Im not gonna be the guy who legitimately gets the AC 130, that's like 13 or 14 kills in a row. Or the tactical nuke (25 kills), Im not that good of a player and the way I play the game is much more frantic than thought out anyways. So having care packages works for me, it lets me have more of a chance of getting some of those wicked Killstreaks. When I played online I also didn't find like there were too many killstreaks going on at one time. I didnt feel like I was standing in a building for 10 minutes just to avoid missals or Air ships. I also think that you can still have skill in MW2 but then again I never played COD 1 on PC. I really haven't gotten into the series since COD4. So I guess Im a poser.

I hate to burst your bubble, but the Predator is incredibly easy to counter, and the perks are all balanced very well.

It's MUCH more skill based than COD 4 or WAW. And besides, the COD series has always encouraged tactical camping, since it's inception. If someone gets a 25 kill streak and earns the nuke, the other team deserved to lose for not uncovering a camper via a simple hand grenade.

Also, the care package is a slot machine: you could end up with a useless ammo crate, and seldom end up with anything good.

That's why I love Uncharted 2's online so much. Sure, there are boosters, which are essentially perks, but they aren't game-breaking. The game is still 95% skill-based, and it shows. I get killed by people who don't have any perks equipped at all on a regular basis, and they're in their level 50s.

@Magnalon Hate to burst your new bubble but anything that gives even a 1% chance to "cheat", I mean literally that's what we're talking about. I've seen it ALOT I would say nearly 1/3 the time you get something good. Something that can instantly end a round in S&D. Yes all you have to do is run inside a building but not everyone can make it in a building right on time. Those things can still kill you at the mouth of an entrance as well. Who goes after anyone that's near a building anyway? Anyone with intelligence is going for the guy out in the open or the guy who's the last man defending the bomb. Who conveniently is about 30-40 feet from a building. Also if you didn't know you can actually speed up a predator missile which no one can out run, you have maybe 3 seconds to move. Which in turn gives you maybe 10-15 feet.

Of course there are perks but it's a lame excuse for a counter. The only counter that should be needed to anything should be skill or intelligence. Playing all matches with a perk as a counter is not adaptive nor skill based.

What's the 1% of cheating?

Also, you can see if people have a predator before they launch it, it's announced, you can hide yourself from it's tracking if you care enough (Cold Blooded), and it shows up on the radar.

Basically it's really easy to counter.

And that is why I don't play all those crazy first-person shooters based on war! :)

L4D and Counter-Strike FTW!! :D
