Guitar Hero IV, Do Want or Do Not Want, that is the question.
Vitamin Awesome | 8:25 AM on 05.16.2008 19 comments

So I've been keeping a keen eye on this hullabaloo over Guitar Hero IV. Some things seem to make my eyes roll (Inclusion of Drums and Microphone), but some things are making me a little giddy (looking at said Drum kit and gameplay modes.)

Have you seen the GHIV Drums? They're flipping sweet. Five pressure sensitive pads that will know when you're slightly tapping or really going all out on them seems like a bit much, but at the same time it seems so... awesome. The possibility of repurposing said drum kit is a little more appealing to me than actually using them for their intended use, to be a little honest; It looks like a decently made electronic drum kit. The thing is, however, I don't think I'd have to wait for someone to fiddle around with hardware drivers or any of that jazz to make my own music, now that studio mode has been confirmed.

Studio mode, is a Guitar Hero fan's wet dream come true. I'm really bad at paraphrasing considering I just woke up, so I'm just going to go ahead and quote the gamespot post:

"The details in Game Informer also clear up the mystery surrounding the "innovation" which Activision promised was coming to the Guitar Hero series in a recent earnings report conference call. The article outlines the game's studio mode, which will give users a variety of ways to create their own songs. Players will be able to jam along with one of the game's existing tracks, record songs as they're played, or meticulously detail note charts.

As rumored, the game will also allow users to share the songs they create. Players will initially only be able to upload five songs for others to enjoy, but if those tracks are rated highly by other users, the creators might "get signed," raising the cap to 10 songs or more. "

So, Destructoid readers, what say you? I'm somewhat torn, I didn't like where Activision was taking the GH Franchise (Guitar Hero Aerosmith? ugh), but the studio mode does have my interest piqued. Will it just be for the guitar, or can you do drumming with it as well? Would it just be more worthwhile to just pick up the Les Paul that actually HAS srings?

Im sure Rock Band will come up with their own version of Song Creation.

If not, shame on them.

Its about price for me. If Activision can undercut Rock Band in Europe (not hard) and not make us wait SEVEN FUCKING MONTHS more than the US for it (even less hard) then they'll have my money.

Really I think Activision are in a brilliant position to take advantage of the right royal fuck up that is the European Rock Band launch and just freeze Harmonix out here completely.

It's just annoying that I'm going to have to purchase MORE drums when I own Rock Band already...and the two peripherals won't be compatible I bet

I like the look of the GHIV drumkit more than i like the Rock Band one. The most important thing about these kits is how they feel. Rock Band got it kinda-sorta-but-not-really right. This one looks like it has a lot more potential.

I'll buy the drum kit separately, because the rock band kit sucks as a midi controller. I'd imagine that, with the cymbal pads, it would allow for more diversity in how I set it up.

It all depends on the tracklist, but really, I can’t see myself shelling out another $170+ for a second set of plastic instruments.
