Hey guys!

Its that time of week again! I just put up my new cosplay post over on Japanator. This week features cosplay from Final Fantasy X/X-2!

This week also features an interview with the Phenomenal cosplayer Yaya Han! Most of you guys know who she is. When I first started this cosplay feature over here in the cblogs, I posted pictures of hear weekly. Most of you drooled over her...as you should LOL. The feature and interview is so big that I had to break it down into two parts, so you will get to see her two weeks in a row!

Beyond the Hype - An In-Depth Look at the Video Game Industry

Once again, flame me if you like for posting an outside link, but that will not stop me from sharing my stuff with you! Many of you guys, especially from the forums, helped me get ideas and work through details of this project at the beginning of the fall semester when I first started! The result is after the link, my senior ethics project. It is a web based project titled Beyond the Hype, and the main focus is to provide parents with the resources they need (and for some reason can't find) to keep them from using restrictive video game legislation as a crutch to solve their problems. Please let me know what you think! Thanks again for all your help this semester! You guys rock!

Where to Get the Best Geek Garb!

Alright, it is worth trying this at least once. If I get flamed big time, I might stop or I might just kick the person in the nuts if I ever meet them.

YES, I am posting a blog with an outside link. The truth is that I can’t just repost an article I wrote for another site here, hence the linkage. It is uber hard for me to write something and not share it with my Dtoid family! I am sharing the article primarily because I know all you fellow geeks might be interested in some kick ass new clothes. Also, I threw a little Dtoid love in the SplitReason bit…lol

Let me know what you think!!!!

I has a Website!!! www.meaganvanburkleo.com

And NO...It is not one of those with a membership fee...Get your mind out of the gutter...

I just wanted to share something quick with you all because I got a TON of help from you dtoiders when I first started working on this. Note to self: Don’t work on something when you are sleep deprived and cranky and then put it up for critique on a video game website. Actually, all the responses I got on my first - extremely crappy – design helped me to get to what I have today! So thanks for all the help telling me my first design sucked (even though you all were WAY nicer than that).

I just launched meaganvanburkleo.com. For right now, it is really only my graphic design portfolio. Later, I will be adding a cosplay and modeling section, and possibly a few other areas. This was my first attempt at designing a fully functional website, so it was a learning experience at its worst. I had a friend program things and there still may be a few kinks. Example: for some reason on the Opera browser, you have to click everything twice to use a link. If you come across any other problems, please let me know!

So my portfolio has my graphic design work, sculpture, drawings and even photography on it. You should be able to check out all the nerdy projects I did while in college. Please let me know what you think! I will be posting a much bigger blog soon about my senior ethics project, which IS video game related…LOL   read

What is The Girls Entertainment Network?

The Girls Entertainment Network is a community that focuses on females in modern pop-culture and entertainment.

Hey guys!

This week has been crazy and I will tell you why! The Girls Entertainment Network has finally launched! Now, please don’t accuse me of being a traitor yet, GEN has been in the works since before I even knew what Destructoid was. Becky “Aktrez” Young is the mastermind behind the site, and after two years of planning, networking, building a site and starting over from scratch – we have a working site. While the site is not what it will look like in all its glory (we are already working with people to improve the site in the future and add additional features) we now have a main page with blogs and stories from our female editors and a functional forum for all of our users to chat!

So what is GEN? The Girls Entertainment Network was created to do just that, act as a network for girls to get to know other females who are interested in geek culture and more importantly, to encourage females to become active online. People always complain that there are not enough females interested in video games, anime, gadgets, comics and other fun stuff. It is not that they don’t exist, it is simply that not many are very vocal online. We are just lucky right now that the really vocal ones who are online at the moment rock, such as our fine ladies of Destructoid.

I understand the goal of the GEN very well because 12 months ago I would have been a part of its primary target audience. Up until last year at GDC (where I met the Destructoid guys for the first time – I was frightened.) I was a solo gamer. Becky found me through a video game group on Myspace, but other than that I had never joined a forum, used a website to check a review, or really participated in an online community. I had no idea what I was missing out on. Before that, my gaming routine consisted of playing games with my brothers and a weekly game night with all the guys. It was not because I was not interested in an online community; I simply did not know they existed to the extent that they do.

GEN’s primary goal is to get these girls online, to introduce them to the greater geek culture and community and to prove that we are a viable market. With this being said I want to clarify that we in NO WAY discriminate against guys! We want guys to join the site and become active. While our staff will remain primarily female, we want guys to be a part of the community. We also need you to talk to your girlfriends, sisters and other lady friends, tell them about the site and try to get them involved. Hopefully the site will be a great and non-intimidating entry point for them into the gaming, comic, cosplay, or anime world!

So what does GEN offer at the moment? Like I said, we are already working on adding features to what we have. Right now we have a simple site that allows for front-page blogs and articles from our 11 female editors. They range from personal experiences, researched articles and simple, entertainment blogs. We will have a stronger news presence as soon as we are able to get the girls out to events. Right now GEN covers the world of Anime, Comics, Cosplay, Gadgets, Video Games and Girl Talk. While most of our editors dabble in two or three (or all) of the categories, we have a resident expert in each of them. My main focus will be video games, while our other Dtoid resident Kannaya will be focusing in anime and manga. While we do have minor photo and video galleries at the moment, our other primary feature is the forums, which are already off to a good start! Please feel free to check them out.

Some of the GEN editors out at VGL!

I hope that I have done GEN justice in trying to explain its purpose to all of you! I also hope that you all have a chance to stop by and let us know what you think. Also – as I mentioned above, please let any girls in your life who are remotely interested in our geek culture know about the site. We want more than anything to bring that geek to the surface!

So that is what I have been up to. It is true that it has been taking up the majority of my time lately, but it in no way means that I am abandoning Destructoid. Dtoid was the first gaming community I ever became active in and there is no way I could go long without a dose of the site. Really, if you think about it, there is no substitute for this site…LOL. I will still be around reading and commenting! Thanks for reading!   read

I can’t believe it…I finally graduated…

I finished my last day of college yesterday. I now have a degree in Graphic Design and a minor in Journalism and Mass Communications. I can’t believe it. I am not sure when it will sink in. I still feel like it is any old Friday, and that I will wake up Monday morning ready to start another week of school. It is a strange feeling being done, but I was ready for it!

College has been one of the best experiences I have ever had, but I was most defiantly ready to finish and to move on to bigger and better things…primarily making money instead of only spending it…lol

So what’s next? I am applying for two local jobs in Minneapolis. That is it really. I decided I am going to be a job snob. I think I lied to myself for a long time about what I would be happy doing for a living. This last year I really discovered that I would never be happy with a job outside of the video game industry. Video games are in my blood; I don’t think I can shake them now. My goal is to either work writing or designing. If I work as a designer, my ultimate goal would be to work my way up the food chain and eventually be a creative director for a game title. The whole developing experience seems like nothing else in the world, even crunch time sounds exciting…for now…lol

If the two jobs in Minnesota don’t pan out, my hubby and I will most likely move out to California. It would be hard, but I have to be where the jobs are right? I has been both stressful and somewhat freeing knowing exactly what I want to do, and knowing that I won’t settle for anything less. It both limits myself, and gives me the strength to focus my passion on one goal.

So there is lots of stuff for me to catch up on. This semester has been the most difficult to date. With 18 credits, all in senior level classes, I was kept quite busy. There are some highlights from the semester that I have yet to blog about. One of my favorites was my senior ethics project, called Beyond the Hype. I created an interactive website encouraging viewers to look beyond media hype when it comes to video games. I will have that one up in the next few weeks, as soon as I get my hosting situation all figured out. I also finished my graphic design portfolio, branded the city of Tokyo, and completed one last sculpture. Sadly, it is not video game related, but it is still cool. I will have all of these items up in the next few weeks to share with you guys!

I can’t even explain how much Dtoid withdrawal I have been going through. I simply did not have enough time to get on the site for the last few weeks, but now I am back! One of the hardest parts was watching my dtoid ranking fall...I am down almost 50 spaces...sad panda! I need to read a ton of past articles, cblogs, and catch up on the forums! I missed you all! I hope you did not think I abandoned you guys! Trust me, you can’t get rid of me that easy! Its great to be back!   read
