Perhaps you should follow your own example first?
But seriously, you can't expect that these issues will be handled in a reasonable way by everyone. I think that is unrealistic. To some people this is a very personal, serious issue, and they have a right to express how important that is to them. People are up in arms because they are obviously passionate about it; that is just how people work.
Game culture is way too large to expect that everybody can act in a calm and reasonable way. It is a pipe dream considering no two gamers are really alike.
I don't agree with the sentiment, but I personally don't see a point (anymore, though I used to be right on board with you) in expressing the "why can't we just get along?" perspective.
I would suggest that if it really gets under your skin (and I can understand why it does) taking a look at Occams comment. Apart from being light hearted, there is some wisdom in that, too. If you see a blog or a comment that starts with "SEXISM, and here's why" or something similar - why not just ignore it? At least, in this community, that is only a very fractional part of what is talked about.

Picture's actually related. In an episode of South Park, Stan gets diagnosed with cynicism and then everything he sees and hears sounds like shit. This makes him a super agitated asshole. I think this disease has spread through the gaming culture.
this is the thing, I'm not calling for everyone to just shut up, and I'm not even calling people to ignore the issues or not voice their opinions about them, all I want is for people to have, at the very least, a modicum of rationality in this whole mess.
I even realize that the emotional response is probably the sentiment of many of the angry masses out there because it's personal, but just screaming the other side down and name-calling never solved anything, it just gets the other side more bitter and more angry.
I know I probably won't get everyone to calm down by saying this, I probably won't even get MANY people to calm down, but if I can get even a handful of people, heck, one person to take this issue in a new light, and maybe think about the other side of the argument, inject some understanding and respect, then I consider this post a success.

I'm with Occams. I've been compiling topics and talking to folks trying to organize a discussion here in the cblogs regarding these topics. I'm fucking burnt on it. I've received a lot of good responses, but I've also been told WHAT I'm going to discuss and HOW I'm supposed to feel about it all. It's fucking frustrating. I'm at the point where I need to step back for a few days and refocus. I feel we need to talk about this stuff, but the asshats are driving me nuts and they are on both sides of the thing. I know its an emotional topic, bit Wtf happened to respect and listening? Oh I'm on the net? Nevermind.
I haven't even read about any of this stuff to form an opinion on it, and truth be told I'm not sure I want to at this point as I imagine everyone is just bringing their own damn baggage into the situation instead of debating the actual matter at hand.
Dude, Felicia Day was in Supernatural. This automatically makes her awesome. Also, can anybody fill me on what happened with Ryan Perez? I must've missed that whole fiasco.
But regarding the whole "lets all go to the movies" approach, it's a pipe dream that I hold close and hope for. But for the most part, I just ignore it and try and stay away. There are many people on this site with entrenched, stubborn values and it's less hassle just to let them shout and then they shut up because they realise no-one's listening. Hell, in a year, no-one will even remember any of these "scandals".
What pissed me off was that the WHOLE gaming community did not attack Ms. Sarkeesian. And of the people who DID, not all of them responded with death threats and rape. Some probably responded with intelligent criticisms of her work (after all, without criticism, nobody would ever try to make stuff better), but she and the media just picked out the trolls nastiest "poetry" and blarghed it all over "teh intewebs", because, hey bad news sells, right?
I'm not excusing the people who did threaten her, but this whole world is (at least to me) losing all reason and intelligence in the face of political correctness and "doin it 4 the lulz".
But hey, what do I know? I'm just a fat 14 year old who enjoys vidjogames. In the grand scheme of things, my opinion on the matter doesn't really matter.

Nah, see, what happened with Perez is that he meant to make a general statement about Day on Twitter, than accidentally sent it directly to her because he wasn't familiar with Twitter and was also drunk. That's what he tweeted the next day and I find it believable, because I don't know how to use Twitter either and am capable of some really lovely drunk posts myself.
As far as him having a spray and pray mentality, I didn't see that at all. The main thing I remember is him utterly owning Adam Baldwin. He broke out and said something like, "Wow, aren't you the guy from Full Metal Jacket? Can you please kick my ass?" Seeing as Baldwin was the one who started talking down to Perez first, I thought that was hilarious. Such a great way to silence a troll.
Baldwin and Wheaton were the true trolls in that situation, you see. They're the ones who blew the whole thing up. They saw the message Perez sent and automatically went into white knight mode, without stopping to think of how maybe it was unintentional. Those are the worst trolls right there. The ones who are completely self-righteous, because they just know that they are "the good guys".
