I figured I would write a little bit after reading Mr. Holmes' article about the Wii's values influencing the PS3 and 360, much to the third parties' dismay:
Business isn't about making money, it's about making customers. Money ONLY comes from customers. The more customers you have, the more money you get. You treat your customers well, and give them a product that satisfies them, they'll become passionate about that product and word of mouth will ultimately sell more than any amount of marketing or hype could hope for. People waited in massive lines for the Wii. You treat your customers like shit, and the opposite will happen. Case-in-point: The so-called game industry.
Third parties are not interested in customers, only making money. But money only comes from customers. The third parties hate Nintendo because they have to compete with their first party games. That's always been the case since the NES. Nintendo's hardware only sold because of their software. It created a very high benchmark that nowadays other game developers are loathe to compete against. So as we're seeing with the Wii, they don't.
That's why they flocked to Sega, but Sega had the same idea as Nintendo, which is why the third parties all swarmed over Sony with the Playstation. Sega and Nintendo both made accessible and easy-to-develop-for consoles (the Dreamcast and Game Cube) but the third parties still mostly ignored them. Sony and Microsoft fought over Grand Theft Auto 4 and paid handsomely for Rockstar's game. It was hyped and hyped, touted as the best thing since sliced bread, the game came out, and Super Mario Kart Wii ultimately outsold it, and without a price cut. For all its hype, GTA4 didn't sell PS3s or 360s to anyone outside the stagnant pool of hardcore gamers. It didn't create sustaining momentum for the hardware. And even now we're seeing considerable backlash against Activision and Infinity Ward for Modern warefare 2.
Here's the horrible truth about the Wii that the game industry would like you to ignore: They need the Wii, but Nintendo doesn't need them. Nintendo wants them to make games for their system, but they're not gonna kiss the third parties' ass and do their job for them. The third parties are showing that they utterly fail to make the kind of old-school games that built this industry, which is what the Wii's audience craves. When their games fail to sell, they blame the customers. The customer is ALWAYS right. Always. Nintendo understands this, which is why most of the time, their games sell so well.
In the meantime, smaller developers are flocking to the Wii and cutting their teeth on the hardware. They aren't making blockbusters...yet. But they're learning. Developers like High-Voltage Software should be scaring the ever-loving shit out of the likes of EA, Ubisoft, and Valve. There are plenty of successful third parties on the Wii, but they aren't in the "game industry". They are developers that would otherwise be locked out of the console market by HD gaming.
You strip away the Wii sales, the Wii customers, and what you are left with is a gaming industry that is well on its way into decline, not because of the recession, but because their business practices of putting themselves above their customers, pursuing revenue before making new customers, and their otherwise shitty attitude towards their existing customers and the Expanded Market, has alienated gamers, old and new. The passion for their games is lost, replaced only by a void of disdain and cynicism.
Nintendo and these smaller third parties are disrupting the game industry by embracing low-end gaming. The industry is also being disrupted by the likes of flash gaming, cellphone gaming, and even those games you can play on the iPhone. Thing is, the DS sets itself apart because it's more gaming system than PDA that just happens to game. Sony and Microsoft both touted their systems as entertainment hubs that could do it all, whereas Nintendo marketed the Wii as just a gaming console. Which sold more units? It's the same with the DS. iPhone can play games, but the DS is a dedicated gaming platform. Not saying it's not important, but I'm saying that sales indicate that people would rather have the dedicated gaming platform.
And don't talk about price cuts. They haven't created sustatining momentum for either the PS3 or the 360. Not even for the Wii. People buy the hardware for the software. The Wii may be in a slump, but it's seen some serious software releases that's gonna give it some oomph while the PS3 and 360 stagnate for the forseeable future. Not to mention that Wii Sports Resort and Wii Fit are still selling healthy numbers. The Sony Wand will only sell if there is compelling software.
If there is no compelling software for the system (and I don't mean hardcore or casual games, sorry), on parity with Zelda or Mario (and don't throw that pathetic excuse for a platformer LBP at me), then Nintendo's audience isn't gonna buy into what Sony is selling. Can the third parties create this kind of compelling software for the 360 and the PS3? Looking at their lack of creativity and success on the Wii, the answer is no. If they can't even be bothered to make a game that's graphically on parity with Shadow of the Colossus and God of War on the Wii, then how can they even do the same on the PS3 or 360?
I understand perfectly well: Third parties are only interested in money. They find new ways to fleece revenue from the hardcore. The hardcore are so easily hoodwinked by the marketing and the hype. People apologize for the industry when they want to strip away your ownership of games (Digital Distribution), for nickel-and-diming its customers. For shipping games bugged and glitched up the ass. For shitty ports of 360 games to the PS3 (Bayonetta). For making sequels that take away features (Modern Warfare 2's lack of dedicated servers). Bobby Kotick makes Ebeneezer Scrooge look like fucking Ghandi and yet the hardcore just shrug their shoulders and bend over.
But that's not the story with the Expanded Market, which is why the third parties hate the Wii. Their marketing always fails. They won't buy into the hype. The Wii doesn't allow the industry to nickel and dime their customers, and it can't shove digital distribution down their throats. They have to compete with smaller third parties that have a better grasp on the Wii audience than the larger third parties. They have to compete with Nintendo's first party games. And Nintendo doesn't release games riddled with infuriating bugs and glitches. They have to compete with quality and originality and integrity, things that the game industry has forgotten about in its quest for prestiege. They can't lock out smaller third parties with high-cost-of-entry gaming like they could on the PS3 and 360. They have to compete, but it's now obvious they have forgotten how to do that.
It seems that the game industry, game journalists, industry apologists and hacks, the analysts, they're all crying doom and gloom for the Wii. But even with the slump the Wii has had, it's still doing just fine. They sold their hardware for a profit right from the outset, and to this day their first party software still sells for full market value. The third parties that actually treat their customers right and make the kind of games that they will play, they are selling and they are prospering on the Wii.
The game industry may need the Wii and Nintendo, but Nintendo does not need them. The third parties have been so used to getting their way for so long, they're like a bunch of spoiled brats. Now they have to actually go out and make customers. Now they're the ones having to bow down and kiss the customer's ass. Their pride isn't letting them do this. Their pride is gonna be their downfall. While they ignore the Wii, the seeds of the future gaming industry is being planted by the likes of High Voltage Software and many others. When the industry finally clamors to the Wii for survival, they're gonna find an entrenched group of developers that are gonna hand them their asses.
Nicely written blog though.
ASDQDWEFERFGAESRO.
Seriously though, nice article.
The Wii, from my perspective, looks a lot like the mobile software business a few years ago. To say more would be telling :) but I think there's a similar mindest and modus
Gaming has become mainstream, fantastic, but publishers must realise the needs of customers, or they will spend themselves into non-exsistance.
I just figured the devs that really hate the Wii are the ones that always want their games to have the "best" graphics possible. My guess is that since the Wii was such a huge risk, Nintendo had to go with an SD console, but that now that it's proven to be a success, they'll come back with a graphic powerhouse next time. I wonder if those 3rd parties will warm up to it then
Anyway, great blog, and I'm flattered to have been part of its inspiration.
Probably helps that I came here expecting to hear another poorly articulated anti-Nintendo rant like all of the others I've read, but instead, found some nice bits of truth.
It's clear that you are a Nintendo fanboy, who caters to the crowd pleasing of such peoples while ignoring the truth. I however feel no shame in criticising and praising those who deserve it, no matter the format. Heaven forbid, we could ever say anything negative about the great Nintendo. I so fear they might smite me, not! I remember when I used to be like you, and Nintendo could do no wrong, what a fool I was, and I can admit that fault. After years of owning Nintendo product and being fucked over by them, I'm a lot more worldly and wiser to the harsh truth.
The truth is that while Nintendo are great at games, the sun does not shine out of their ass, like a golden Shine Get. They are backwards, draconian fools, Wii is a piece of crap uber GC console, which they are frankly lucky is selling. It will tail off eventually. GC came out in 2001, so to expect devs to be working on that in 09, with even slight improvements, when technology progress a lot in that time is stupid. This is not about cost as Nintendo claim, but Nintendo doing what they always done since way back. Trying to do a King Kanoute on games tech, because they don't want to progress their games to new graphics and thus learn new tricks. Yes, there's a reason Twilight Princess is their most graphically stunning looking game to date from them and nothing matches it. That came out in 06'.
You think that Nintendo doesn't need the games industry? Lol, what a fool you are. If Nintendo doesn't need it, they would have left it ages ago, to become like Disney and just sell Pokemon DVD, cards etc to kids, alone. Have they left the games industry? No, because they like the money, and ultimately being No.1, and dictating shit to people. In short, they have a Pope/King complex.
Where are all these Wii developers you mention, Vanor? Can you list them, because all I see on this article is High Voltage. Most Wii development now comes from japan, because they would work with Nintendo out of loyalty and name recognition, and not give a crap about hardware, because many devs out there are so entrench in 80 game design mindset still. Whether their games reach the west is another thing entirely. And when they are developed and not backed by Nintendo, why is that? The Conduit, which was developed for Wii is a cool enough game, but did you know its devs couldn't get Nintendo to publish it? If such games are supposed to keep the remaining hardcore on Wii happy, why didn't Nintendo put their name on it, to help Wii?
On top of that, why was Disaster Day of Crisis, and Fatal Frame IV not scheduled for western release? I think Nintendo doesn't want to back these cool games, even on Wii, and as of yet Fatal Frame isn't going to grace your Wii. Does this sound like the work, of a sane company like Nintendo appear to be? think not. I think Nintendo just want to sell Wii Fit etc.
The only point you make that's valid, is the strength of Nintendo's games and brand name. The thing you fail to recognise is, its perfectly natural and good business sense, that if you can't compete with a rival product, you rethink and change your strategy (Nokia bowing out recently, against iPhone etc is a very good example). In that respect, any third party that tries to compete with Nintendo games on a Nintendo console, is like horse calvary rushing at speed against a fleet of mordern tanks, they'll become man and horse burgers. Low sales will not convince them to hang around, when they have bills and staff to pay. The casualties lay at the roadside of the games industry, and there's no sense in adding to that pile, so PS3/360 and PC are better destinations. Feel free to ignore those casualties, as you seem to be doing nicely, with those blinkers of yours.
Sure, Vanor, your blog is well written, amen to that, but just like your previous posts, very flawed. Feel free to answer those questions I've posted above, I can't wait to hear your myopic, Nintendo laced answers.
wow man, what planet are you living on?
Nintendo is the only company that is actually making a profit from their console, I agree its not hardcore and all that but sadly & truly we are just a small minority to them... I think he has a pretty good point that the "large" third party devs are going to get into troubles from ignoring the wii for so long since the devs who do care about the wii ( like SEGA & High Voltage ) will just keep on getting better and better at abusing the little white box of joy...
And that's what it is... a white box of joy... I've got all 3 consoles right here all of them set up and ready to go... and even though the wii is a weak piece of shit ( graphically ) compared to the other 2 and my dual-SLI-gaming-pc, the wii is the console that gets used most when there's people around...
Fancy graphics don't add a damn thing to games, innovative controls add a tiny bit of joy when they're waggle-controls but they can truly make a game shine when executed correctly ( No More Heroes, Call Of Duty 3, Need For Speed Carbon ). I haven't tried COD:MW:Reflex yet as I'm a little short on cash after upgrading my gaming PC yet again, but from what I've seen it seems a LOT more fun then COD:MW was on the 360...
It's like cars, sure a Porsche looks fabulous but if you have to go shopping you can't buy all your groceries cause you can't take them home ( note: I love porsches but they are nor very convenient for 'regular' use ) so a regular sedan would be the way to go... Its the same with the PS3/360 they're absolutely great for hardcore-gamers like us, but when 'regular' people get to chose between a 400-button controller and a waggle-stick, they'll generally go for the waggle-stick.
A lot of 3rd-party devs don't seem to understand this but about 80% of tomorrows gamers are growing up with a wii in their home so unless these devs start releasing some quality stuff on the wii, these guys won't give a SHIT about them once they grow up and 'graduate' to HD-consoles...
btw the reason a lot of the 'hardcore'-titles are doing so bad on the wii is because a LOT of the hardcore gamers on the wii don't bother buying them, yet pirate them all since it's so easy on the wii, so they're more to blame on the failing of 3rd-party-games on wii then the 3rd party devs themselves...
face it, hardcore gamers have become a tiny minority in the huge group of gamers (why else do you think sony is releasing a 'wand-controller' and MS is creating Natal?? ) so the sooners these devs realise that they have to 'bind' the new customers to their name by releasing quality wii-games, the more chance their is that they'll stay in business later on... no game can survive purely on the hardcore-crowd ( as history has proven time and time again, ( shadow of the C, NMH, Psychonauts etc ) games that purely cater to hardcoregamers sell like crap, while games for the 'general' public are goldmines )
Hey Mistic. I seek to own all consoles too, its the best thing to do as a gamer. Applause.
Yes, Nintendo are making a profit, that's great for them, and that's what businesses are supposed to do, good for them. What about those that aren't so lucky? Those who create Wii games for them to end up not selling? For the silver lining on their cloud, shadows are still being cast. Third parties want to move out of such shadows, and away from Wii. Are you seriously going to tell me, that they are wrong to feel this way, and do so? Only they, can look after themselves and their interests.
Hardcore and casual are meta terms at best. Strange thing about that, is that casuals buy less games, even on Wii. So, for the industry to thrive and not collapse as some analysts have predicted, they have to buy and become more hardcore. The more bucks they spend on games, the closer to the core they will eventually become. I've never disputed Nintendo's casual stance or motion controls and I'm happy its paid off for them, as the industry as a whole benefits. Get them hooked and keep them coming. Cool.
'Fancy graphics don't add a damn to games.'
That's complete utter bullshit. Graphics matter now more than ever, even though they are peaking somewhat. By your logic, all those indie games would sell loads on PSN/XBL, than professional product. Try tell that to those who purchased Uncharted 2 or Demon's Souls, two recent awesome games, that would probably blow up a Wii, just doing the maths. Games are a visual medium, and if you really believe that, go back to playing Pong, Asteroid and Breakout. You'll soon change your mind. Graphics are like a piece of art, you can use pencils or charcoal alone to realise a vision, or go full on with oil paints, spray paint etc. Developers should have as much medium range as possible, to realise their dream games, not have them artficially restricted and castrated, because of Nintendo's crap hardware. The Wii canvas will suit some, and fairplay to those can work within its limits, but there should be no tears shed, if a dev/pubs choose to realise their vision elsewhere. That's just sour grapes, in a bullshit wine bottle. Like I said before, they don't matter to Nintendo, because they don't want to learn new tricks others learn, and thus make there games look better. This is why Twilight Princess is their best looking game, and nothing else Nintendo comes close to it.
'No game can survive purely on the hardcore crowd?'
Bullshit. Resident Evil is a hardcore games series and one of the best selling in the industry, and its stable mate Street Fighter has done just fine, long before casuals gamers arrived. GTAIV broke sales records, which have only recently been trumped by MW2. Fifa and Madden sell out every year, globally. All are hardcore games. Not every game aimed at hardcore gamers will sell, but the same goes for casual games. Wii Fit sold well, but there will be other similar games to it, that won't sell. People only have so much money, and gaming is a luxury past time, sometimes someone has to lose out, such the games you mention. That's life, a game of winner and losers.
You know where the games industry is shrinking, for real? Japan, due to their low birth rate and ever ageing populous. Most other nations don't have this problem, so to a degree I also question the shrinking stance Nintendo/analyst claim, which I feel is japan centric, with western markets mattering more. We need only look at TGS 09 to see that. I think elsewhere, the industry is thriving or at least at a steady pace, largely due to third parties pushing the boundaries of possibility, and also due to the recent rise of the indie developers. They are the future, regardless of where their games are played. Devs/pubs will always open and close, but will still feed the circle of gaming life.
Sure, technical specs of a system might not matter to some, or Nintendo, but with them, developers can tell how much they are going to be able to do. The same way that PS3 is very capable yet hard bitch, and expensive to develop for, a developer can evaluate whether a game is worth making on a system. If Wii is cheap enough, but overall not good enough in such respects for devs, games will be made elsewhere, simple as. 360 is a nice enough equilibrium, between PS3 and Wii, and PC a good extra outsider option. Don't forget iPhone too.
Once motion controls are on all systems as an option (alongside normal controllers), things will change for the better. You are going to see an increase in such games, as the extra options (hard drive/DLC etc) of 360/PS3 come into play, that Wii couldn't handle. Even I, am more likely to invest in a motion controlled game on these systems, than on Wii. Each to their own. The future still looks bright, so I gotta wear my shades.

If not, you should check it out. Extremely lengthy, but worth it.
Great blog, but I can just sense the wave of fanboy bullshit that will hijack the comments.
I'm aware Disaster came out eventually, thanks. We shouldn't have had to badger Nintendo to get it, is my point, especially with Wii's catalogue crying out for such titles. On top of that, Fatal Frame IV is still in limbo. Gamers want it, but Nintendo's great customer service doesn't seem to care. Do you not find this odd and worrying?
When I mentioned Twilight Princess, perhaps I should have worded it better. I meant its Nintendo's most technically graphical game, in their catalogue to date, even though its three year old game. I'll leave beautiful out of it, as that's a matter of more precise opinion, as you point out. My main point on this is that Nintendo fear making all their games to such a high or higher graphical standard, and thus justify their gimped systems. You'd think they'd sacrifice such thinking, to make a better system and attract more devs/pubs onboard, but its never been that way with Nintendo. I reckon this is a decision from the suits and money men at Nintendo, than those who create the product. Its a real shame they are still repeating this cycle for a further third generation, and I'm sure many devs can see that too.
Could Nintendo get it right with their Wii successor? I wish, but after being burnt by N64 and GC before, and kind of now Wii, I hold little hope this will happen (feel free to prove me wrong, Nintendo).
Sure, the casual/hardcore thing is bizarre, but it does help the market when selling these games, as well as monitoring sales, marketing etc.
Like I said at the end of my last post, each to their own. Play what makes you happy. Its your life, time and money.
Overall, all I was saying, is that third parties shouldn't not be chastised, because they choose not to run with Nintendo's gang and create Wii games, even gamers if some might want them to do so. The odds and the chance of good Wii sales, are stacked against most of those third parties, that do attempt such action. The strength of Nintendo games also works against them from the start, so mostly that's what Nintendo consoles are about. For evidence of bad sales and sorrow, hit links below.
