I came home from work today to find my fiance trying to play Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. She wasn't doing very well. "Aw, bless" i thought, then recommended we get her a DS with Cooking Mama, or dust off the old PS2 dance mat.
She wasn't too happy with either suggestion.
Now i'm sure it's just a stage, but she seems to have her heart set on giving gaming a go. So, i started to think about what would happen if she ever became a serious gamer. Maybe she'd sign up to destructoid and use the forums.
And i'm not sure i'd be too happy with that.
I don't know if any of you have noticed, but the female members of the destructoid forum get a special profile badge symbolising their femininity. That's fine. The problem is that it is a picture of a woman's chest.
If i was a woman i'd find that kind of degrading. There are much more suitable feminine symbols that could be used. Like an iron or the stylised drawing of a woman in a skirt you see on some public restrooms.
I certainly wouldn't want my partner to be sexualised in that way. It makes all of the female posters appear slutty.
Like i say, there are much better, and more appropriate ways to visualy represent womanhood.
Something like this, but perhaps it could be made pink.

To be honest, I don't think gender need even be identified or promoted with a "badge". It's not an accomplishment (and neither is age). However, that being said, Destructoid is rather a unique community and I wouldn't at all be surprised to find that the "girl gamer" badge is given out to any guy that owns a pink DS.
He actually has a point in some ways... I was actually just writing a blog on Dtoid from a female's perspective (which might take awhile)... and at first glance the site is very much a "boy's club" even down to things like a picture of giant boobs to identify females in the forum. Yes, many women would find that sexist and demeaning to be identified as "boobs". I do think he missed the point that we're all gamers and that women don't need to be identified at all as female (and certainly not with a pink picture of a girl from a bathroom sign). We're quite capable of saying we're female if it's relevant. In some ways I think it might deter female participation, but on the other hand, once people participate a bit more, I think that the surface is almost a mocking of those standard stereotypes, including the boy's club stereotype.

The badge is not mandatory, in fact, none of them are, the female badge may be boobs, but its for satire you twit. You know because most gamers are male? So a female gamer is "har har show me your tits"? Well some of those female gamers have a sense of humor IMAGINE THAT! So if they didn't want the boob badge they wouldn't ask for it. More than likely if they are that stuck up about it they probably wouldn't visit Dtoid period, as it's full of dick and boob jokes and demeans women apparently.
