Enough with the sequels, meng. Sure they'll be good and everything, but what about the new guys? Where's the hype for them? Rather, where is the hype for Borderlands and Alpha Protocol? Everyone on the internet seems to be sucking Tim Schafer's junk because he put out an underrated game that no one ever played. But I digress, Brutal Legend is an original IP and it looks pretty badass (kinda) so whatevs.
Out of the three I'm getting Borderlands and Alpha Protocol.
Borderlands looks to be what I wanted Fallout 3 to be in the first place. Don't get me wrong Fallout 3 was greatness, but too often I tried to play that game like a FPS and not an RPG. Borderlands seems to be the other way around. It's a FPS first with RPG elements thrown in afterwards. You have loot with a color-coded system(much like WoW) so you can tell how rare an item is based on the color with varying stats and whatnot. 4 player co-op that's class based, an open world to explore, and awesome cell-shaded graphics. This game is going to ruuuuuule.
Second on my list is Alpha Protocol. I like spy games and spy movies, so this is right up my alley. What I especially like are the dialogue/choice options and Syphon Filter-like character and weapon customization options. Apparently insignificant choices you make at the beginning of the game will changed the end of the game in a big way. Will it all be as awesome as the devs are making it out to be. Hell no. Of course it isn't, but I'm excited to see if the guys at Obsidian can put out a hit. I believe they can.
I'm not gonna bother with Brutal Legend. First off let me get this off of my chest. I love how the internet is one giant bandwagon. You have dudes who hate on Dane Cook because the internet says so. You have dudes who go out of their way to criticize The Jonas Brothers - a band that clearly isn't marketed to them - just because the internet tells them to, and of course you have the drones who suddenly all love Tim Schafer because the internet tells them to even though they never heard of him until now. Look I know some of you guys here truly do love the guy and the games that he makes so know that this isn't directed towards you.
Anyway, the game just doesn't do much for me. I watched a developer walkthrough a couple of weeks ago and while it doesn't look bad it also doesn't look particularly exciting. Add in the fact that I'm not much of a metal head and it's all just very "meh" to me. I honestly think the game will flop, but we'll see.
What are you interested in out of these three?
About Borderlands: fuck yes!
About Brutal Legend: I'll probably get it eventually but every article says the same damn thing about metal being both funny and cool. I'm kinda sick of hearing about it.
About Alpha Protocol: it's going to suck.
Holy shit! It's been forever since I've seen this blog and it's sidebar! Glad you're back!
Now we've got that out of the way I need you to shut the fuck up!
HAHAHA! No dude, I respect your opinion but Tim Schafer and Metal in one game is like sex with multiple ladies at the same time. Not that I have ever experienced that but I haven't played Brütal Legend either. So yeah.
I do agree about Borderlands:
"Borderlands looks to be what I wanted Fallout 3 to be in the first place."
Exactly my thoughts too. And I did love the shit out of Fallout as well.
So there you have it. We will have to play co-op dude. I can't wait.
I'm pretty interested in Borderlands. I agree wholeheartedly with your thoughts about Fallout 3. I tried to play it myself, but it just didn't hold me as I hoped it would. Borderlands might've been what I was looking for. *fingers crossed*
I want to love Alpha Protocol. With Chris Avellone at the helm, the story should be pretty good. It comes down to the gameplay and how it all wraps into one game. Another fear would be that Obsidian has a habit of having rushed, fragmented endings that feel like a kick in the gut. Examples: KOTOR2 (Well, LucasArts is mostly to blame for rushing this for the holiday season), NWN2 (rocks fall, people die... that's not an ending, that's an internet meme).
I'm getting tired of people hyping Brutal Legend without having any hands-on experience with it. I know Tim Schafer is a great game designer, I have since the Day of the Tenacle. For some reason, having Jack Black attached to this makes me feel uneasy. I love Tenacious D, but I've watched a good handful Brutal Legend vids and it feels like he's honestly 'calling it in'. It's definitely be a high priority rental. If it's everything that I enjoy in Tim Schafer-produced game, I'll have no qualms purchasing a copy.
Now we've got that out of the way I need you to shut the fuck up!

Right, my bad.
:D
Borderlands looks like it could be really fun.
Brutal Legend has a cool setting/vibe to it, but I don't like the gameplay.
Alpha Protocol looks bland and boring. Not necessarily in gameplay, but everything about it. A modern day spy with plain looking design in clothing etc. Not my thing.
@ Pyroph
But dude! You get to customize your guy with clothing and accessories!!!! It's going to be awesome!!!!!! ...maybe
I've just seen footage from E3 and maybe a few videos, so if there is that's cool. Modern day stuff just isn't my thing. :p
I'm pretty much looking forward to all three of these. Like you said, I'm hoping Borderlands will scratch the itch that Fallout couldn't quite reach, and I'm one of those longtime Tim Schafer fans, so I take no offense at your harshness here. Alpha Protocol is my least anticipated of the three, but it's still got a ton of potential.
I'm super hyped for Brutal Legend, Borderlands looks interesting but will probably just rent it, and Alpha Protocol doesn't interest me.
Only thing looking good about Brutal Legend is the Brutal Soundtrack. The gameplay looks disconjointed. The graphics are bearable at this point. (( Screenshots/Video )) Overall I agree a bargain bin purchase.
Borderlands is like Prince of Persia/WoW/ & Fallout 3 mixed in perfect harmony. Day one purchase!
Alpha Protocol is a SplinterCell/Mass Effect type game IMHO. I'm not completely sold on this title yet... Sorries.
I like the looks of all 3!
I guess I can understand why people aren't digging AP. The game reminds me of this
and I was in love with that game. AP reminds me of that, but a lot more involved and deep. We'll see though.
I'm one of those not so Psyched for Alpha Protocal, I might give it a shot someday though. I can't freaking wait for the other two though. Also I think you're crazy for believing that a game as heavily marketed as Brutal Legend will fail.
Honestly, I couldn't give less of a crap about Brutal Legend. It just doesn't interest me in the least bit.
This blog has a severe lack of Way of the Samurai 3, coming out right about the same time in October (the 13th) that these fine newbies are planning to drop.
Sequel, yes, but so low profile, its new to you!
@ Tub
Do I get any cred for attempting to play Way of the Samurai 2 back in 2004? That game sucked ass, but your blogs on WotS3 have got me kinda stoked. I can't lie about that.
I will definitely be picking up Borderlands, no question. I've had my eye on that for about two and half years, so I can't wait. I think I'm going to pass on Alpha Protocol for now, but I might look into it sometime in the spring when we hit the lull before summer. It looks good, don't get me wrong, but I'm in the middle of Mass Effect at the moment, and I'm trying not to get too caught up in super long RPGs.
I've been thinking about the reasons why I want Brutal Legend and I don't think it has much to do with Schafer, although I played Full Throttle about five of six times in the same month when it came out, and I like to think of BL as it's spiritual successor. Of course, I didn't learn about Schafer's connection to Full Throttle until after Psychonauts came out.
If anything, I'd say that it's the style of the game that's drawing me in. Psychonauts was just so convincing in it's setting and characters that I really want to see how Brutal Legend stacks up in absorbing me into its world.
