A Quick Tip for Cblogers and Video Bloggers

It looks a lot better if your videos fit the parameters of the blog, so before you embed the video, look for the height and width of the video in the embed code and change them respectively.

The size differs on the video... the width will always be 550, but more often than not the height will be anywhere between 440 and 470. Youtube for example would be 550 x 459, Gametrailers would be 550 x 449... Gamevideos is slightly different; 550 x 530... but really, if you aim for the 460 mark, you video won't distort too much. Here's an example:

See? Fits lovely.

The most diligent of you will have probably already noticed this, and the less diligant probably won't care, but at least this post can serve as some kind of satisfying intellectual benchmark if you're in the former group, or the corresponding surface to your snipey indignance-Velcro if you're in the latter.

Edit: I've decided to make a list of popular video player heights, if constrained to 550 width. Just for ease. Next week, the top 10 widths in video player history!

YouTube: 459
GameTrailers: 449
GameVideos: 530
Revver: 447
Castfire: 447 (Ask a Ninja)
Videoegg: 457 (Zero Punctuation)

I couldn't find the embed code for Google video. Any others, just post in the comments.

Nice quick post, good find. This is the first I actually thought about changing those numbers.

Obviously, the same goes with images. Infact, that's how I work out my video proportions; I make an image in photoshop that fits the default restrictions and then scale it up or down accordingly. It's much quicker than dividing the number by the other number, then multiplying it by a beard, then taking away the leprosy you first thought of, then do something not very nice to a politically incorrect mortal node, etc.

Well done, UglyPhil. Thanks for the tip! I haven’t embedded any videos yet on my c-blog, but I have used images, and I only recently figured out that the width is 550 pixels (good ol’ “Constrain Proportions” function in Photoshop!).

And now, here’s a minor spelling tip from me: it’s “diligent”, not “diligant”. The latter word, if it existed, would be pronounced with a “hard g” (e.g., “garbage”) as opposed to a “soft g” (e.g., “gin”).
