A Dark Prediction for Mass Effect 3 *ME2 spoilers*
Ubersuntzu | 4:33 AM on 01.25.2010 6 comments

What we already know of ME2 tells us that all the important decisions of ME1 don't have an impact on ME2. Whether you let Kaiden of Ashley live doesn't matter because after the opening act they'll be gone. Letting the council live or die doesn't matter because you'll be playing through an entirely unrelated plot that doesn't involve the council due to working for Cerberus now. Wrex might show up for a conversation, but that'll be it.

What we know about the ending of ME2 is that it's ambiguous. Shepard can LIVE or Shepard can DIE. And because it's an important choice in ME2, we can pretty safely assume it won't have any major effect on ME3. Shepard will be the character that gets spotted or heard from once and then never seen again. I'd guess that goes for most of his new team, too.

Now obviously I can't say that for sure, but that seems to be where Bioware is going with all of their "important story effecting decisions." Total cop out.

I'm not going to even bother trying to save Shepard. Might as well get as much drama as I can squeeze out of the new crew before I say goodbye to them for good.

The Silent Protagonist
I find it sad that no one bothers to make decisions (or skills, passive traits) carry over from one RPG to the next. I realize they want to keep things entry-level for newcomers and the PS3 crowd, but if Bioware isn't going to maintain the choices the champion so much, they need to do what comic books and some other RPGS do:

Make it a multiverse.

In a multiverse, all endings are valid and had their own timeline in which they happened. This way, you can at least pick one of the outcomes that was possible and pick up the next story with that so not all the endings are ambigsous.

I realize some people might have an opinion of what the true ending was and might get upset if their version of events doesn't carry over, but having an outcome that does carry over and keeps select characters relevant is rather important. Make a decision what the canon is.

Deus Ex 2 made the mistake of choosing to merge all three endings from the previous game to one scenario. Denton merges with Helios, triggers the collapse and the Illuminati are not elimiated, but divided into two factions - the WTO and the Order Church.

Its cute and it makes everyone's preferred ending a starting point, but its also sloppy. They should have gone with one angle and moved from there.

Other choices could be portrayed as expansion scenarios and I'm sure fans would welcome it. I think there's actually a lot of potential for that, but Bioware just doesn't seem to want to do the work. So they go for the cop-out of making certain characters irrelevant to the next game or their fates ambiguous.

It's best to treat it as a stand-alone game. I had some concerns about how the game will be affected by its predecessor, but since the effects seem to be minute, I don't think it'll be any bigger for the transition to the next game.

You're so right. They make this big ass deal about how your prior decisions affect gameplay, but traditionally it never lives up to the promise. I suppose they don't want to alienate gamers who are new to the franchise or make the new game's plot rely too heavily on past events (especially if you didn't play the first one, or made some...um...questionable decisions the first go around), but if that's the case, they shouldn't make it seem like your past decisions are some kind of big deal when they obviously affect nothing substantial.

I have only one question for you: what is this based on? A guess?

Based it on the Mass Effect wikia. Confirmed it with my own experience after having played it for nearly 40 hours now.
