No Nazis in LEGO Indiana Jones?
UMF Skibum | 2:27 PM on 02.13.2008 13 comments

If you've been longing to kill LEGO Nazis in a video game, your dreams will continue to go unrequited (at least for now). Last week, Edge magazine had a chance to sit down with LucasArts and Traveller's Tales, the publishers and developers of June's Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures. To be fair, the article did have some great information about the game. Like the Star Wars games, Lego Indiana Jones will be split into 3 chapters (for a total of 18 levels). There will be humorous recreations of moments from the films, including an awesome-sounding retelling of the opening of the Ark in which the paint is wiped off the face of Major Toht. There is also a new promised “phobia” mechanic, introduced to address Indy's near-crippling fear of snakes. When facing a snake, the player loses control of a terrified Indy, forcing the second player (or AI) to save him. Other than that, the game looks like another parody-filled, block-collecting ride.

The news from the title of this post comes from about three-quarters of the way through the article, when Edge asks about the game's enemies.

Traveller's Tales has chosen to remove Nazis ... from the game, 'Lego [has] already replaced them with an anonymous genocidal, occultist, trenchcoat-wearing master-race'. The studio explains it has left it down to the strength of the Indy characters to show they are bad guys - but 'that said, we like to reinforce the fact that these really are terrible, terrible people.'

While TT promises that they don't want to stray from the Indy formula too much, it does throw me for a loop there will be no Nazis (or any reference to them). The Reich is such a huge part of the Indiana Jones lore, and it just seems odd to be facing some anonymous enemy. Especially when the villains are a “ genocidal, occultist, trenchcoat-wearing master-race.” Is just stripping the name of the group a suitable solution? Don't get me wrong – I'm no fan of the Nazis. I'm just surprised by the decision, and suppose I'll have to load up one of the hundreds of World War II FPS games from the last half-decade to get in some German-killing fun.

Well that seriously blows, but I guess I'm going to have to settle by killing "anonymous genocidal, occultist, trenchcoat-wearing master-race..."

Wait...what?

rofl! that is the most amazing quote ever.

They probably want to sell a few copies in Germany, where they don't like it when you rub their past in their face (because there's apparently laws against Nazi symbolism in any sort of media)

I think they just don't want to get some parents upset at the idea of Nazis in a lego game.

But yeah, it seriously blows big busy beavers balls.

As long as they're Nazi-esque, I'll be content.

I suppose Lego just didn't want kids fighting over who gets the Hitler Lego bricks.

Hey if you can't rip out a stormtroopers arms with a wookie, what's the point of another Lego game?

If they use the same figs from the sets, I won't mind. They are okay.

If they only remove the cross and change the color of the uniform a bit, I see no problem... besides what snaileb said.

My brother and I got a NES for Christmas back in the early 90s, right at the end of its life cycle. One of my most vivid gaming memories is playing Super Mario World at Service Merchandise back in the day. Since then I've had a SNES (my favorite system), a N64, a Gamecube, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, DS, Wii, Xbox and 360.

Outside of gaming, I am an obsessive skier and an amateur beer homebrewer. I live up in the state of Maine, although I did spend a short stint living in Juneau Alaska. My favorite types of humor are those shown by Seth Rogen, Mel Brooks, Mitch Hedberg and Michael Showalter. I am also one of those kids that loves comics enough to go to the comic shop every Wednesday to pick up a couple of books. I used to host a radio show and love music, particularly The Clash.

Other than that, I guess the usual info...
