Oh man, that would be great. While games like Devil May Cry carry on the action game/beat 'em up genre, there's nothing like a Final Fight clone. Of course, the reason the genre died in the first place was because they were all so similar and repetitive, but they were still fun.
The Warriors released on PS2/Xbox was probably the greatest 3D beat em up that I've played. Somehow took the game play and threw in some modern gaming twists without feeling like Devil may Cry. If you've ever seen the film The Warriors, it becomes apparent that it had some influence on the genre.
Another good series to check out is X-Men Legends 1 & 2 and Marvel Alliance. Very excellent beat em ups that use the X-Men and Marvel license very well and gives a nice beat em up with basic role playing elements. Great series of games.

A reason Mega Man died was that they were all so similar and repetitive that no one could tell them apart. I know Mega Man 4 from Mega Man 2, but some people can't spot the differences.

if its going to appear later on your list id feel bad for jumping the gun on ya, but id kill to see a smash bros game done retro.
Final Fight 2 on the SNES was a big favorite of mine. A 4th installment would be tons of fun. Same with an official Streets of Rage 4 (even though Streets of Rage Remake is excellent).

@Spykron: not gonna happen. Smash Bros first instalment was on the N64 and basically the style has remained the same to this day, just refined.
@Brando: yes, Turtles in Time was a great game but as I said in the article for me Final Fight stands out as the classic of the genre so I chose it. A retro sequel of Turtles in Time would be great also.
@Aurain: sorry but I'm not a Sonic fan, so it won't be in my list. I surely think Sonic games should get back to what made them great in the past, but I leave Sonic to Sonic fans.
