On the PSN, nobody can hear you scream. Cause you don't have a Mic.

I have the flag. I took down three Warhawks single handedly, hopped out of the burning wreckage that used to be my own flying machine, and took out a tank with an RPG, alone, to get this far... but now what?

"Hey, guys, I have their flag, someone wanna send a hawk over here and pick me up? The skies are pretty clear for the most part."
-silence-
"I'll settle for a jeep..."
-silence-
"God dammit."

Tell me this doesn't sound familiar. It seems like 11 times out of 10 it's a voiceless empty void in most PSN games. Warhawk, Soul Calibur IV, Team Fortress 2, silence. Okay, maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration. I have run into people that talk, every once in a while. But it's rarely ever to, you know, strategize, and that's okay I'm all for trash talking, really, when you kick some ass you want that fact to be known... especially to the guy who's ass you just kicked. It could get annoying, sure, but it's one of the main differences instead of playing against an AI. I just wonder... if the PSN is free, couldn't you use that money you're not spending on a decent headset?

Maybe it's because people can just hop online whenever they want, dick around and do whatever, with no worries about commitment. After all, they didn't pay a monthly fee for this, no pressure.

While this sounds great and everything, the lack of a mic severely hampers many games playability. Why bother even hopping online with Soul Calibur IV when I can fight emotionless, cheap, and downright annoying characters offline against the CPU, and I don't even have to worry about lag! This might sound strange, but after playing Soul Calibur on the 360 and also playing it on the PS3, I couldn't go back the PS3 (even if the 360 D-pad is borderline broken on the 360), at least the online mode. It was just... so boring, no personality. I WANTED people to talk shit. I know, it sounds weird. But when you're so used to something like that and it's suddenly taken away... it's noticeable. Like in Tom and Jerry, if Jerry was ever killed in a mouse trap, Tom would finally get his peace and quiet... but some part of him would die with Jerry.

Okay, you get the picture.

Games like Warhawk, or Rainbow Six: Vegas use voice for shit talking, yes, but it's main focus is for strategy. Call for help, ask people if they need help, plan weapon layouts, stuff like that. It's essential, it makes or breaks your team. Well organized squad? Or a heavily armed mob with the combined intelligence of a acorn? A hard choice I know, but think it over for a minute.

The Socom: Confrontation is nearly out, and judging from the beta it's pretty good. It's got some bugs... and it doesn't really look... what's the word I'm looking for... "next gen." But, what the Socom fans were saying was true, the gameplay does make the difference. On top of which, people were talking! A lot! Actually for the first time ever, people with mics were outnumbering the people without mics. Madness?! Yes, indeed. But welcomed madness. My squad mates were using tactics, covering each other, doing stuff that I found terribly surprising but far from unwelcome. Now I know this is a limited beta, for people that pre-ordered the game. I have a hunch, that many (if not damn near all) of them had played a Socom game before on the PS2, and are using the very same headset. In addition, one of the packaged versions of the game is coming with Sony's wireless headset for only 59.99. A damn good deal, considering the headset alone costs 50 bucks, and the game alone costs 40.

Though they did that whole headset thing with Warhawk... and well we saw how well that's be going.

Never the less, I remain optimistic. The more people playing Socom, means more people talking on the PSN in general. With Socom coming out extremely soon, we're not gonna have to wait long to find out. I wonder if having this game (and Warhawk before it) actually hurt its online community? Either way those that play Socom and get the mic will trickle outward onto other games (I hope), and Sony's official headset will help standardize everything a bit. With all this combined, I really do see things looking up for the whole vocal community. The PSN is a great service thus far, especially for the price. It will definitely take a bit more work, from the players, and Sony, but there is a bright light shining at the end of that tunnel. I think. Never the less, because the console doesn't actually come with a headset like the majority of 360's it's got a long way to go till it catches up to the Xbox's service, at least in terms of player communication... But it sure beats the shit out of the Wii's.

Ever since I first bought Socom 1 with my network adapter for PS2, I haven't been able to play an online game without having someone to talk to.

I bought Warhawk with a headset when that came out, and I've barely touched that thing, I have some kinda problem every time I or someone else uses that thing. I'm really considering buying this Socom with a headset, because this one looks so nice. I dunno though, I don't play my PS3 online much though... maybe I should properly introduce myself and start getting involved in FNF.

Attack on Nintendo at the end, huh?

Anyway, I agree that people don't talk as much on the PS3, but I don't think the lack of a headset is as much of a problem as I initially thought it was. If people played enough online PS2 games to have headsets, then those would probably be the same people playing online on the PS3. With Warhawk including the headset, more people should have been talking. Maybe that Jabra headset just sucked.

Mic's on Warhawk = Muted Player.

Mainly because said person is pre-pubescent. Why is it always the 12 year olds?

Maybe it's because the console doesn't come bundled with a headset.

I mean, not many people went out and bought Warhawk. Lot's of people just downloaded off PSN it as well, and just as many are content playing the multiplayer demo that was released a year after the game.

i've noticed most of the time i hear people use a mic, its on COD4, and for some reason, they think we should all listen to their music they have playing in the background, damn it drives me crazy.

although for the most part, on FNF w/ COD, we work together, or talk trash during the game, but i think it's a higher class of gamer w/ TOID FNF

It's because I'm very self-conscious, m'kay. Haha actually when I bought Warhawk this summer it was no longer being bundled with a headset. I was planning on buying one but then I heard about the official PlayStation branded one that I needed to have. But yeah, a little self-conscious as well.

i have the MGS headset and never use it because im usually a quiet person as it is. but the features of the new sony headset almost seem worth it. i enjoyed socom on ps2 maybe ill have to pick this up after i get dead space, saints row 2,fallout 3, LBP, farcry 2 and so many others.

311 is right. People use their mic for the wrong reasons. There are too many whiny little bitches playing with a mic. And if only it was a good quality mic. It's really frustrating when you can't hear your teammates because some douchebag uses an equivalent of the old can on a string. This makes me enjoy the occasional silent match on COD4.
I almost forgot, it's even more frustrating when the game itself produces the most irritating voicechat sounds on the planet. I'm talking WipeOut HD here. What a load of bullshit.
Button pressed voicechat should be banned forever.

welcome to PC gaming.

I played all three SOCOM games (Excluding Combined Assault) and it was definitely the reason I purchased the PS3. I remember all the good times I had, discussing random topics, tactics, or "who would you have sex with" conversations over the mic, while owning the competition. This was my favorite game, and due to my lack of funds I won't be able to purchase the new mic yet, but I do have my own mic which was a pretty expensive one, anyway.

I want to host SOCOM for this Friday's FNF. Hopefully, some people from the community will join and stay committed to this segment, unlike Warhawk and COD4.

If you want to hear people use their mic for the right reasons play a PC game like World of Warcraft or Team Fortress 2. The coordination that goes on over voice chat in those games is just down right AMAZING!

Now as for PS3 voice chat, Sony needs to get their fucking act together and start including a cheap $20 mic packaged in with the system. It's the only way things will ever change.

Yes.

I love my PS3, but if I want talking I just play some TF2 on the PC. The people aren't retards, and the game screams for communication.

Yeah, in MGO....

wait, thinking about it, MGO with random people is better without mics. Hell, sometimes even the text chat get filled with the same shit...

 about me

I'm an action junkie for the most part. If something isn't exploding at least every 13.7 seconds, I'm pissed. I'm re-discovering the power of PC gaming through Crysis, Far Cry, and Battlefield 2. I own all 3 major consoles, X-box 360, Wii, and Dreamcast. No but seriously, I got a PS3 too. Besides the PC gaming, I'm still playing a whole bunch of Vegas 2 and Halo 3, anxiously waiting for Grand Theft Auto 4.

I got myself a PSP and DS as well, though I rarely see the DS anymore (I blame Cooking Mama and my girl friend. Terrible combination.)

My all time favorite games though, changes all the time. I can never narrow it down cause I'll always remember a game from my past that totally kicked ass, and it just fucks my list. Right now though my list is like this:

1. Starcraft (PC)
2. Resident Evil 4 (GCN)
3. Megaman X (SNES)
4. Halo 3 (360)
5. Halo 2 (Xbox)
6. Street Fighter Anniversary Collection (Xbox)
7. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (PS2)
8. Earth Defense Force 2017 (360)
9. Twisted Metal 2 (PSX)
10. Super Mario World/Yoshi's Island (SNES) [tie]

Anyway, hopefully my blog is semi interesting to you guys. I occasionally do this:
