Iron Man Xbox Live Demo Review
Tuskentheraider | 4:07 AM on 04.19.2008 17 comments

Well I would like to begin by declaring my immediate bias. I love Marvel Comics. Every single damn comic book character published by those wonderful creative masterminds gets me harder than a sexually aroused Ben Grimm. I'm also obsessed with open ended super hero games where you can fly, jump really high, web-sling, etc.
That being said, this demo was pretty good. The setting is the middle of the desert, some top secret military base. Reminded me of The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction (Pretty fun sandbox marvel hero game where every other level is some top secret military base in the middle of the goddamn Mojave). The flight system is pretty fun, albeit loose considering the default camera sensitivity is so high you feel like a 10 year old off his ritalin wearing a jetpack. You get used to the controls eventually and let me tell you- dodging missiles in mid-air is pretty dang enjoyable.
The graphics are beautiful with a definite attention to detail. Being a demo, there were a few buggy areas graphically where it seemed unfinished but I'm hoping those will be polished out in the final game. There is an upgrade system with your armor, giving it just that HINT of RPG. The weapons are fun to use; you dont really feel like Iron Man until you've shot a volley of rockets at a helicopter while speeding through the sky. The melee punching gives you a sense of power as well, and you can actually rip the tops off of tanks by rapidly tapping B (melee button). The targeting system is neat because it is useful but at the same time it doesn't "baby-up" the difficulty of the game.
All in all, the demo showed definite potential. Wasn't "rock your balls off" exciting but I certainly enjoyed it. Sometimes licensed super-hero games have been known to show promise but FAIL HARD in the final production (COUGH SUPERMAN RETURNS COUGH) but then again don't all licensed games? (with the exception of such gems as King Kong and IMHO Spiderman 2) The gameplay is solid and playing as Iron Man is badass enough, so really I see the game only being able to go up from here.

i thought the auto aiming killed it completely, i could shoot in a completely different direction from the enemy and as long they are in my camera view they would die. saying the camera sensitivity is high is an understatement, i had to basically just hover around cause flying was an exercise in motion sickness.

I struggled a little bit with the controls at first but I think it seems that it might be one of the better movie games.

Nice review, if only I had a console to download the demo on...

I had a quick go, will give a better assessment tonight. I kinda felt that the flight system would have worked better if it was toggled on and off rather than you constantly pressing to keep yourself in the air. It's also maybe the nature of the demo but there seemed little point in power allocation to anything but weaponry.

Can the camera sensitivity be turned down any?

Still, it was fairly fun and I loves me some Iron Man, so I might well pick it up.

Thanks for the impressions, I'd like to check this out. Hope the final version smoothes out a few of the issues, but still sounds like something I'd dig regardless.

It looked nice, but it's all a bit lame in its execution.

I had fun, whether I get it depends on whether the movie lives up to my (admittedly high) expectations.

Damn its out already?

But you gotta have a gold account right? Bah!

I liked it, it did seem a bit on the easy side with auto aimming/locking on, and I also was never really worried about dying. The demo was way too short, I think it took longer to download than it did to play. A purchase isn't out of the question, but I don't know if i'd spend 60 bones.

Maybe the auto-aiming thing is an option or something. I haven't gotten a chance to download or play the demo yet. But I planned on buying this anyway. I've been an Iron Man fan since the 80's

I wish the game was more sandboxed and not in little areas where you need to complete missions

All of these comments certainly ring true in some fashion. I did notice however when i would land on a bridge that there were rivets in the metal girders and for some reason that attention to detail impressed me, considering this is a game where you are expected to fly around like a maniac and the fact that they included something like rivets on a girder that the player most likely will never even come close to just impressed me.

A tutorial is a must. A lot of people would cast off this games controls if they dont pay attention how to actually play it.

@The Phazer:
You have to pull the trigger and hold it in halfway. Thats how you you hover and keep yourself in the air.
