There's been a lot of crying and moaning in the blogosphere recently. So much so that I really felt the need to interject something positive. I know everyone's getting sick of Final Fantasy XIII blogs. But honestly, I feel like I have a very fresh perspective as a long time gamer. Frankly, I've been gaming longer than some of you have been walking. FACT.
This new game has been a real breath of fresh air. Its just not everyday that you get a game of this calibur, and people really need to stop and appreciate that. I know you have very strong opinions about voice acting, storyline, exploration and all that. That's great. More power to you. But sometime, i think, the need to pass an "honest" (read "negative", amirite) opinion just seems to cloud the receptors of an otherwise rational and respectable gamer. If you're looking at this game and just getting frustrated by the dialog, lengthy tutorial and arguably complex upgrade system, then ... frankly, I can't understand you. Granted, its clearly not the greatest work of interactive or linear fiction ever created, but I think some concessions can be made to appreciate the game around those flaws, or otherwise appreciate that content for what it is. Culturally, narrative just flows a little different in Japan, I think. Which also goes for the English-from-Japanese vocal beats in FFXIII. Despite the culture shock, there are some really solid and interesting things happening in the story for the first few hours.
Now, I haven't really gotten to the part where it opens up, but honestly, I'm not pining away for it. Exploration in JRPGs is a bit overrated, I think. The meat of it is the characters and how they interact. Like some other esteemed bloggers have stated, no one complained about the linearity of Final Fantasy X. And for a game called "Endless Ocean: Blue World", it was a little surprising to be so limited at first. So long as the story goes somewhere, as they often do in Final Fantasy games, I'm sure this game will still top most people's best games ever lists. That said, I have some concerns about the combat. I didn't really enjoy the combat in FFXII, with the programming and waiting and watching. However, I'm not so sure I can get behind this combat system either. Its not really tough yet, but I can see myself getting frustrated with menu browsing while the real-time action is in full swing. But again, not a deal breaker. I trust in the developers to continue to guide the experience in this lengthy tutorial period. That's why its there, after all. I'm a seasoned gamer, yes, but I don't know this game, an i appreciate the assist.
Also, I'm a little disappointed by the water surface effects. Again, NOT MAKING A BIG DEAL ABOUT IT, but I have to say I expected better, considering the really fine work done on games like Uncharted 2, Little Big Planet and Mario Galaxy. Considering all the games that have come before this one that have water down to a science, I really was expecting to be impressed. But whatever. Its really not breaking the overall experience but... you know?! I guess I just expect a higher standard of quality from these guys.
But ultimately, the meat of this game isn't about silly things like dialog, combat quirks or shallow water nitpicks. As much as people have complained about Final Fantasy XIII, I'm really enjoying this game. It pushes all those gamer nostalgia buttons while offering a new experience on an old paradigm. Well, that's my two cents anyway. As I play more, I'll be sure to keep you posted.

Not my favorite for sure, but excellent.
I'm digging the backfill story. Nice way of giving us some coherent narrative while making the relentless fight seem alot more immediate and urgent.
Gotta take breaks to savor it, though!
This game isn't haunting me, SO WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE?
A lot of reviews said the first 15 hours were boring, and while I do agree that some of the hand holding was annoying, I had a blast during the game's linear part and feel like its increased linearity led to some extremely tight storytelling and excellent moments.
Plus, I really love the current cast and Sahz and Lightning are already some of my favorite FF characters period.
In which case, you're doing it wrong.
I think one of the big problems with the game is the term "fal'Cie" and those related to it. It just looks and sounds retarded, and the ridiculous apostrophe and odd capitalization don't help. I genuinely think that people are getting so distracted by that stupid name that they're not understanding the plot.
Also, why is nobody looking at the Datalog? That tells you everything you need to know, and the fact that it's there allows the characters to talk without having to go into ridiculously long explanations of everything they say. Have none of these people played Mass Effect?
But yeah, I'm honestly enjoying this game more than XII (which I liked), and certainly more than that stupid piece of crap X (which I hated SO MUCH).
Also, I don't think the dialogue is bad at all. It's not Quentin Tarantino or David Mamet, but within the ludicrous pseudo-anime confines of an FF game, the script is damn fine indeed. Sometimes minor characters' delivery is a little shaky, and occasionally the scene itself is played-out crap you've seen a thousand times before, but overall I think it's been vastly underrated. The voice acting of the leads also elevates even the worst scenes IMHO. I've never heard a better cast in an FF game.
But here I am wittering on when I could be playing the thing. Look for a much longer post on the game by me to go up soon.
I had hoped Crisis Core was a sign he was out of his rut, because everything there was well-done even if it did poke a few holes in FFVII's plot. Seems like it was a fluke or perhaps the advantage of those characters being established.
But Final Fantasy isn't just about the story - though weeaboos would have you believe differently. I played FFXI for five years and while the story was really great it wasn't something you could rely on to keep you going.
FFVIII's story is pretty fucking terrible and its still one of my favorites in the series for its gameplay. It was the first game to really have the balls to take what players knew and change it. For me part of the fun of these games is learning about all the little quirks in the system and its not something that happens in a week.
I also think its just PS3 games are so starved when it games to RPGs that they were really hoping this was going to be the best thing ever. Even though half of the already intended to keep FFVII #1 in their hearts, which isn't giving the new game a fair shake at all.
@The Silent Protagonist
I actually liked Yuna a whole bunch. She had the potential to fall very flat, but I think she filled into her role very well. She's no Frodo, but I felt like she grew into her destiny nicely.
Until X-2. But that's a whole 'nother thing....
And I would like to think that's why people are going crazy on that story. I understand it, and I read the Datalog. It's like people are fine reading Mass Effect's bible, but probably don't look at the snippets of info on FF13.
Is it because supposedly JRPGs are supposed to be more open? I don't really understand that. You still have to go to certain places in a certain order to advance the story. Sure you can wander around a continent or something and fight random battles in a game like FFVI but you still have to follow a path to get farther in.
1. The combat system: I hear what your saying about the menus. Later on when the pace initially quickens you will occasionally find yourself scrambling around and accidentally entering the wrong commands but after an hour or so it all becomes second nature and you'll find those missteps go away entirely.
2. Culture Shock: I have to disagree with you here. I think a lot of complaints stem from the fact that the underlying mechanics of the game have changed so much. Personally, I'm not really that distressed about the linearity or the loss of towns, (I agree some of it was overrated JRPGS) but I can totally understand how fans who have followed the series for years can find the changes off-putting. It's less culture shock and more of a resistance to change. I remember hearing similar complaints when Final Fantasy X decided to do away with the World Map. (A trend most JRPGS ended up following)
3. The Pacing: My biggest complaint about the game is the pacing. I don't mean the flow of the narrative but the way the battle mechanics are introduced. I find it kind of insulting that Square actually thought it would take players over 10 hours to figure out their battle system. They really should have given players much more credit and done away with the hand holding early on. It's nice to have an assist early on, but that's no excuse for limiting the battle system for so long.
4. The Datalog: more of a response for Ffordesoon - Games like Mass Effect use the Codex to flesh out the universe not to explain the story. Imo It's kind of lazy to use the Datalog to actually explain whats going on in the narrative rather than utilize the in-game cutscenes and interactions. I'm not really complaining though since FF games in the past have stories which are just as baroque and impenetrable early on. I've learned to be patient and wait a bit for things to get explained, they usually do, even if the explanation makes absolutely no sense ;)
All in all, I feel the game is a mixed bag. I'm personally enjoying the shit out of it but at the same time I find a lot of the complaints people are making to be valid.
Anyway i've gone on long enough. Looking forward to reading more of your impressions as you progress through the game.
"I don't get why people are so upset about the "linearity" in this game. Like Tubatic said, FFX was pretty linear and tons of other great games are linear too i.e. Uncharted 2."
Social conditioning. When FFX came out, video gaming communities online were much, much smaller than they are now. Now that they're much larger, one person felt the need to clarify why exactly WRPGs are better than JRPGs, so he harped on them being linear as if it were an inherently negative quality. Somehow, this actually gained attention, and became the forefront of many WRPG vs. JRPG wars. As such, trendy JRPG lovers became excessively self-aware of this terrible 'fault' of their games, and became much more vocal about their distaste towards closed environments.
The more you know.
Me too.
Dude, totally. And now I have a chain-lightening gun? Game OVER!
