So I'm playing through Mass Effect on 360, and the game has just presented me with a unique experience. Gets Spoilery after the image, though there's a video payoff at the end.
requisite generic topical image *********Spoiler*********I've now taken the time to really talk to me crew after Noveria mission, my 2nd big on after picking up T'Soni. Anyway, I'm talking to Ashley about her family, and now, I'm presented with this line of dialog: Ashley: That's not a problem with you, is it? That I believe in God. And I have just been completely caught off guard. So now, my Shepard is faced with a question on how he regards theology on his ship, and I'm left with the question "How does my character feel about religion?". Up to this point, I hadn't even considered the acknowledgement of Terrestrial religion in the game, let alone that belief would be any reasonable point of contention. Why is she so nervous about disclosing her belief? Why is that a problem in this universe? After 26 years of contact with aliens, I guess that could shake the fundamental tenants of even the Christian faith. Certainly flies in the face of creation theory, at least in that it seemingly mocks the idea of "created in His image". The implication is either the decline of religious belief in this universe, or a military value of don't-ask, don't-tell for a soldier's spiritual belief. And I guess this further catches me off guard, because sci-fi usually operates devoid of real world religious connection. I haven't chosen yet, but I was really surprised by the situation. Impressed even. This could very well be one of my own personal memory card moments. :P ********no more spoiler********* Now to STFUAJPG. They've just been staring at each other for minutes . . . this has got to be awkward for them . . . This video is your reward for viewing my musing. Enjoy (audio is clean classic fun. video NSFW) video relevant to the article and your interests

The moment in question certainly did raise my eyebrows though- and it certainly should raise a debate. But honestly, the Vatican has stated that it's perfectly acceptable to believe in aliens without compromising your identity as a Christian. Even if Williams is a Protestant, the Roman Catholic church has always held rather conservative views comparatively.
God I loved that game !
