Players can elect to summon "cartoony" versions of bats, bombs, guns, and flamethrowers. These types of items can be used to destroy objects or even other summoned items (e.g., a club can be used to hit an animal; steak can be attached to a baby to attract lions; rockets can be lobbed at a man).

I Love My Job in QA!
Tubatic | 8:56 AM on 07.09.2008 12 comments

I've mentioned before that I work in QA. Beyond, that I can't talk about the specific projects we're working on or the companies we do work for.

However, its no industry secret that I work with cell phones and related tech. Its cool enough getting ample hands on time with the newest phones. But the big fun comes from figuring out how to convert/break nifty new features like slide out keyboard inputs and touch screens. This can result in moments at work that make me pause and think how excellent my job really is (which I already love, despite its challenges).

For example, the other day, one of our developers calls me over to get my opinion on touch screen functionality for a game that we had never done touch functionality for before. Between figuring out how much functionality was expected, and giving my opinion on good gameplay experience, I effectively "produced" that portion of development.

This blew my mind.

A tester in his native environment.

I didn't just become Shigeru Miyamoto or Keiji Inafune, and I haven't passed into the public face marketing side like a Jade Raymond. But right there, at my little job in the "little" cell phone porting industry, I just had a real design decision come under my professional consultation. Pardon me if I geek out, but that was amazing!

Few people will ever experience the effects of that decision, and likely no one will even know I had a part in it. But I'm looking back at my pre-teenage, Gameboy toting self, with those big, game designer dreams, and he's totally spazzing out with joy.

My name is David, and I work in the game industry.

I add testing and design advice to give the game more depth. Only then does the game become complete . . .

Dude, totally there with you 100%.

I also did mobile QA in a lead/management role for Disney for a couple years. It was a damn good learning experience, although I didn't get to do production stuff. The producers I worked with wouldn't ever let that happen. :P

Too bad I live in Florida.

I swear they're NO GAME RELATED IN FLORIDA! I'd kill to be QA or a writer in the game biz.

Full Sail is out there in Florida, too. Though most of the guys I hear of that went there ended up leaving Florida once they're done . . .

I can't afford to go to Full Sail.

Thanks, but it looks like I need to move or wait until somebody opens a studio down here.
