Another arcade closes, and I still want to open one.
Tubatic | 12:31 PM on 05.22.2008 13 comments

A few minutes ago, my best friend sent me a text message to inform me that another arcade, Pocket Change of St. Charles Mall in Waldorf, Maryland, has closed down. Its a little sad, not unexpected, and sweet revenge for when the jerks turned the power off on him while he was fighting Darth Vader in Star Wars Arcade.

Its got me to thinking though: I want to one day open and run an arcade. Its on my list of things I would do if I cam into a large sum of money. Right up there with "Pay off Debt" "Take care of the family" and "Give Keiji Inafune a large sack of money to make Mega Man 9/10"

Its a tough sell though. Online gaming is bringing people together for games without leaving their living rooms, and the people jonesing for arcade cabinets either have built their own or know a guy that owns one. Gaming culture is on the upswing, but dedicated arcade shops, even in malls, are dropping like flies. Regardless of that, I'd still like to try one day.

Slot A into Rod . . . what?

I guess the dream is some magical place with perfect location (duh) that does a little of everything. Internet gaming cafe's aren't big in the US (in the Baltimore/Washington Corridor, at least) and people love tournaments. My arcade would have a section for those LAN party enthusiasts, and maybe some reserved space for a "raid night". Maybe find a way to get a guild to just come over and run their raids right there on site. Or maybe steal the Destructoid tradition of Friday Night Fights and host a few console rooms that kids can rent out.

Then of course, the arcade machines. Maybe focus heavy on popular retro: work the nostalgia angle. Hold tournaments for old cabinets. And, of course, there's so many people that want to play Street Fighter 4 (or anything!) on stand up machines.

Maybe start with these? Put some surround sound on it? Gold Jerry, GOLD!"

But I imagine there's tons of business stuff that works against running an arcade too. Current economy, interest in the games, location, repair overhead, not to mention the electric bill . . .

I dunno though. Somehow, it feels like it would be a worthwhile venture, carrying on the arcade torch. Maybe one day.

You saying you live in MD and you weren't at the NARP? Fo' shame! We could've used another Token Black Guy?

Luckily, my mall has not one but TWO arcades in it. One on each floor incase you are lazy.

Yeah the arcade closest to me (mall arcade) shut down too. It sucks because now I don't really have a reason to go to that mall. It's a shame because they had some really good DDR machines that they kept in good condition.

There's an arcade along the Delaware river in Philly (it's a giant building out on the docks) called Dave and Busters, and its fucking excellent. It's a giant, multistory arcade, bar, and restaurant, and its the best thing ever. Like the disneyland of arcades. There's D&B's all over the country, including in Maryland.

I can't get into D&B though. If you're under 21 you need someone with you who's 25+.

One more month, dammit!

wait they closed the St.Charles Mall arcade down? WTF!?!?

I loved that arcade whenever I was at my mom's house and my sis and I would head up there to shop then get some DDR and PIU action going. It was the only arcade I knew that had the craptacular Guitly Gear Isuka and the only other arcade I know of near me that had a actual CvS2 machine. For shame.

I seriously thought the Arcade in the Greenbelt Mall would've closed before that one though. I really hope Neither of the springfield mall arcades close down. If those go, I'll be lost without an arcade.

Not too much uphere in B-More either, though haven't looked hard since I got here. White Marsh's movie theater has a few loose machines like DDR and Time Crisis 4, and we just found this sweet laundromat that no one goes to that has a Marvel Vs Capcom machine, partially in japanese.

White Marsh is alittle out of the way. Though Silver Spring had an arcade, but apparently they closed that down earlier this year. The place was rather cramp anyway so when people met up on fridays for Tekken matches, we were scrunched up in the back with a good 10-12 people talking, waiting their turn, and pretty much hot black people. It didn't help that Third Strike was a cabinet away.

Apparently from what i've heard is that they're supposed to be moving the Silver Spring arcade to a bigger location. Where I can't remember but It's somewhere metro accessable.

The arcade here is so awful it really ought to be shut down and put out of its misery. And because of 'noise laws' the place doesn't emit a single bleep of noise.

We're right down the interstate from Chicago so I remember having all sorts of Midway and Taito cabinets in every bowling alley and pizza place in the entire city. Pizza Hut on Stevenson Drive was the total shit. It was the place where I first played the original Street Fighter and with as much as I dumped into some of the Shumps they had off in a small room towards the back -- I don't know how it ever went out of business.

I guess technically they never went out of business -- just moved to a 'swank' new location just down the way on busy 6th Street. So one day when my gf suggested we go pick up a pizza from that location, I was excited.

All they f'n had was two crane machines and some other game where cheap ass prizes were the only motivation. She couldn't quite realize why I was pissed off.

It's definitely depressing to see arcades shut down. Can only hope that something happens to reverse the direction this trend is taking.

As far as setting up your own arcade goes, it would probably help a great deal to turn into a more multi-purpose venue with things like a LAN cafe component.

I've never even been to a proper arcade, The closest is one of those amusement type places (well, thats not true, there was the one at Cedar Point, but eh.) There was an Aladdin's Castle here at one point, but every time I was near it everyone was always in a hurry for something and by the time I was 10 it was closed.

Yeah, the only arcade-ish thing that I know of in my area is at the mall, and it basically sucks. The only way I could ever see an Arcade being successful is if you rented out rooms for lan parties and stuff, and maybe if you had a bar or resturaunt or something too.
