In light of Mario Kart 7 (3DS) being released and how I was recently thinking about the Mario Kart series over, since my brother decided to beat double dash and Mario Kart Wii in the span of a week (I already beat both) it lead me to ask which one is the best?
Mario Kart started on the SNES with Super Mario Kart where the game was made to be a F-Zero type game with Mario characters. Super Mario Kart is a great game in which I still play today when I get the chance. This is the 'kart creator' game in which all other wanna-be kart spinoffs came from. Super Mario kart offers 2 modes Battle and Grand Prix; where in this game the Battle mode is surprisingly better than its "soon-to-be-releases" (you have 3 ballons and aim to kill each other). The Grand Prix is probably the hardest in this game as after 50cc you'll be begging for mercy on the AI's and their infinite items (they get special items you cannot get, for example Bowser and his fireball or the Mario Bros get INFINITE STARS) and you getting outweighted all the time (YES EVEN IF YOU ARE BOWSER lol).
Next on the list is Mario Kart 64....the real name brand one because Mario Kart 64 made it well known to gamers of all ages. The multiplayer mode in this game is pretty good(up to 4 players battle or Grand Prix) and the tracks are amazing. The graphics were very well done for the time of 1996-97 and the game is still fun today (and clear!). The problem with this game is I can sleep and still get 1st place in this game (well not sleep in 150cc but...). In addition the 4 player grand prix is not done all to well since the "grand-prix" is just the four players instead of versing all the characters! While the maps are well designed they are short and not "deep" otherwise no complaints.
After we had Mario kart Super Circuit; the first handheld Kart game. While this game did receive positive reviews I disliked it very much. The game was just a mix of Mario Kart 64 with worse graphics and Super Mario Kart with a little better graphics. The remakes of the maps were not that great and the weight system came back but was so off balanced if you were Yoshi you were getting tossed in every 150cc race. The game was just not enjoyable.
Now came the most unique Mario Kart...Double Dash! Double Dash is a GCN game where you choose two partners to race on a kart. Now the catch is if you choose a heavy character you have to use a heavy car even if you have a lightweight paratroopa on your team. This game really brought the multiplayer to another level as you can play with your friend on the same kart or race them. Some maps are simply amazing on this map (like Wario's level) and other's are bland (Peach Beach). Another new feature was the Special items each character had (well sets of characters [i.e. baby mario and luigi have chain chomps while mario bros have fireballs]). It made you want to mix up the teams. In addition, you can unlock karts and use other 'teams' karts just to try things out with different handle and weight. The only problem in this game had to be the last "special cup" where you have to play 16 straight races (3x lol).
Next on the list is a game-changer....Mario Kart DS. This game brought Mario Kart to the next level on competition with online multiplayer. Like playing against other people from around the world in Mario Kart!? Impossible....no possible. Plus the addition of no more link cables made local play so much fun. Oops...I forgot to mention that only one person needs the game for local play so everyone can just play connected!! The new maps in this game are to die for along with some of the new items.....well not all of them (cough Squid Squirt). Nothing bad can be said about this game.
Well mario kart Gp/arcade came out but I do not count them....they are fun though try them at Dave and Busters!
Now finally is Mario Kart Wii....an excellent underrated mario kart game. Mario Kart wii has beautiful remakes of old levels from SNES to DS and 16 unique maps, which I am infatuated with (the new Koopa beach level, MapleTreeRoad, Daisy Circuit, Star Road, etc). The online capability in this game succeeds any game on the wii (but people always compare online wii to smash bros WTF) as the online is so smooth no lag and great competition. The new karts are awesome, the Wii Wheel is freaking amazing (even though a lot of people do not use it WHY!>) and the redone music is great. Too bad the battle mode still sucks but the Grand Prix and Vs modes and online so outdo each other no cares for battle mode. Forgot to mention the vast amount of characters added to the game (Funky Kong, Dry Bowser, etc) and the use of motorcycles and tricks on ramps....you did good Nintendo.
So to end this off which is the best? well it is tough to decide but here is my order
Mario Kart Wii, Mario kart DS, Double Dash, Super Mario Kart, Mario Kart 64 and Mario Kart Super circuit GBA.
