Hey Dtoid, I'm TriplZer0.

I'm a science fiction, fantasy, and speculative fiction writer by trade, but aside from writing, video games are my biggest passion. I also write over at Gamer Limit.

The first console my brothers and I ever got was an SNES for Christmas one year. Since then, we've owned an N64, Playstation, PS2, and an Xbox 360. I got a Gameboy Color one year for Christmas, but my brothers are more into handheld gaming than me. Every time they upgrade to the latest system I get their hand-me-downs. That's how I obtained my GBA and my two DS's. Handheld gaming for some reason doesn't interest me even though I know there are great games out there. The first console I've ever been the exclusive owner of is my PS3. The first games I ever played were Super Mario World, F-Zero, 7th Saga (which I've written about), and Out of This World.

My favorite genres are RPGs (Western or Japanese), FPS, action/adventure, and RTS (even though I suck at them).

Sick of Arcanum already

So I tried to play Arcanum years ago and I stopped after getting to Tarant just because the town is so big and I got overwhelmed with the number of quests I could undertake. (I was born after the golden age of RPG's so my experience playing RPG's were more linear affairs like Final Fantasy VII and Chrono Trigger)

I stopped playing and just now re-installed Arcanum about a month ago. I like the premise of the game. Steampunk meets magic = awesome. But after playing it again for over a month (and getting a lot farther than I had last time) I'm sick of it. The balance issues have completely turned me off to the game.

I really really wanted to play as a technology/gun user. I made a dwarf character thinking their race's aptitude for technology would be handy. Mistaaaaaake! *sung in an operatic fashion* Technology users have to carry an inordinate number of doo-dads just to make their "spells" work. I put a lot of points into the gun technology skill tree and I fabricated some good guns, better than I should have had at that point in the game, but still I did piddly damage.

So I took some advice that I read on the Internet that magic users or melee fighters are way easier. I made a new character, a human mage. I breezed through the game. Magic is ridiculously overpowered. And all you need to do to replenish your stamina (read mana) is just run around or rest for a while. Whereas when I played my dwarf guy, I would have to backtrack to town to buy more bullets or buy supplies to make my own bullets.

I got to level 45 out of the possible 50 with my mage before I got sick of the game (and I'm not even close to being done with the story). The story is interesting, don't get me wrong, and the world is so well developed but I'm bored! Basically whenever I get into combat, I cast the same spells and kill just about everything in 2 or 3 hits. Plus, I have a spell that for 80 stamina instantly disintegrates the target -- granted it leaves no corpse behind to loot, but for the insta-kill, I'll take it.

I know this game is positively ancient by today's standards, but it just had so much potential to become the RPG that introduced me to a more old school style of game, but the problems in its execution have held it back.

Sigh.

I hate that about some class based games, you think some charchter will be cool to use but ends up you have to do some ridiculous amount of grinding or work just to get them on par with another class.

Usally just end up picking the most boring but reliable ones to play the game.

Holy crashing zeppelins, Batman! I heard that game had a ton of bugs. Maybe if you want that steampunk fix you should pick up Valkyria Chronicles...eh? eh? Come on!

@Cadtalfryn

Maybe I will or maybe I won't. I'll keep trying to look for a cheap used copy.

I feel your pain, somewhat. One of my friends got me into Maple Story yet again, and it's been a couple of years since I last played. I suppose our experiences are different, but MS wasn't "finished" back then and by the third or fourth time I started playing, the Aqua Road area was just new and there weren't even 4th jobs yet. Now...there's a fifth class and they're rolling a sixth soon, there are quests everywhere, and the guides call for completely different stat allocations. It doesn't seem as grindy, but probably because there are more servers and fewer people around now, so I'm actually getting that pseudo-single player experience I've always wanted without assholes kill-stealing me and so on.

But I dinged for the first time in two years today, and I'm halfway to my second already. <3 abusing event quest. I hated MS because I'd always get into it, and I'd be the last of the people I know playing and it'd go unused and eventually uninstalled. And that may happen again, but whatever. It's something to do and it's free. *shrugs*

No wonder I couldn't finish that damned game. I was a gun maker, and apparently, tech sucks in that universe.

So yeah, this is a really old game with a cult following. That can only mean one thing in the world of RPGs!

MODS!

I don't have a link at the moment because I'm so tired I feel like my eyes are bleeding, but I'll dig one up for you. I recall there being an excellent mod that rebalanced the magic/technology thing that so destroyed the fun of the game. I'll be back later with a link if someone else doesn't link it up.
