Diablo3.com bought out by Blizzard. I wonder why?
Tricoden | 7:44 PM on 04.30.2008 13 comments

An old fansite for the Diablo series, Diablo3.com has had a countdown for a few weeks, to something that "half the internet will be linking to." It may not be May 1st, but sure enough, the announcement has been made.

According to the new location of the site http://www.diablofans.com/, there were contacted a few months ago by Blizzard about the domain name, and sure enough it was bought out. They said not to consider it as an official announcement.

Hmm, really? Seems close enough for me. Diablo 3 seems all the more possible

It could possibly be to avoid future Diablo-related scams as well (like the somewhat recent Dreamcast one), though the obvious is much more plausible.

Eh, I wouldn't be quick to see this as confirmation. Diablo is their IP afterall, and they probably don't like the idea of a fansite playing loose and fast with one of their most recongnizable trademarks.

With all the GTA hype I had forgotten about the countdown. I can't believe thats all it was, what a letdown.

Haha, I was pretty let down too. As much as I don't want to hype myself, I'm going to be real disappointed if this isn't eventually going to lead to a D3 announcement.

Don't get your hopes up. Gaming companies will often buy/register domain names that feature their titles, and then do nothing with it. Just look at NOA and Mother1+2

I remain hopelessly optimistic. I wouldn't be a Diablo 3 fan if I wasn't.

Well, this is how I'm looking at it. Apparently the fan version of Diablo3.com has been up for a very long time, which raises the question: If Blizzard didn't want them using the name, why didn't they discuss the matters much ealier?

I believe this will be the next MMO installment from Blizzard. Diablo series has always been better in the online experience. Including that the single player mode was also fun.

and they are hiring new people for a upcoming MMO, that sheds the light on my assumption.

I can't believe there was ever any question. Here is the announcement, guys..... "Diablo 3 will be released for PC in 3rd quarter 2009, and based on sales, ported to Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 later in the year."
You heard it here first. ALERT THE INTERNET!!1!
