Wii, the cores of your games are hard for a change
Trev | 1:25 AM on 02.12.2009 4 comments

The much maligned Wii might actually have some games... ok, a game, for people that like me; those of us who don't need a fanciful trip to the huggy time sparkle princess kingdom to play tee-ball with no points and little plastic trophies for all those little motherfuckers, even the ones on the bench the whole game.

This is the tone of House of the Dead: Overkill which is (it is a delight to type the following words) a ton of fun. It is over the top and intentionally absurd. Take a console built with pointing shit at the screen in mind, and on it put a game built around pointing shit at the screen. Mechanically it is not without flaw: the very slight, inherent lag of the Wii pointer shows as it takes maybe a quarter of a second for the on-screen crosshair to reposition and since the Nyko Perfectshot has vanished from the goddamn face of the goddamn Earth it's my only option right now. You don't have to fire offscreen to reload, just shift the remote. Yay motion sensing.

The grindhouse trailer for the game struck me as publicity that ultimately wouldn't reflect on the game itself. It was clever and it was House of the Dead. Done, right? Oh no, every bit of it is exactly like the trailer. Not just the cutscenes, but every voice snippit for gameplay, the menus, everything including the manual is pick-something-sploitation. Terrible running jokes, harsh language and cliches.

Buy it. Go. Right now. I don't care where. Walmart is open 24 hours, you could get it there. There's apparently no nunchuck parts to this so you can not only drink and play the game, you can drink while playing the game. I've been doing this. Yeah, you can fire wildly into a pack of advancing zombi---”mutants” while tipping back a Jack and Coke.

-Awesome arcade experience
-Takes advantage of the console
-Great writing (holy shit, I'm not lying, the writing works with the new style)
-Great presentation
-Fun

Also, I hate you if you get the goddamn revolver frames. I also hate [edit: having to upload images at work]. I don't hate openoffice writer for checking my spelling though. Thanks OO.

It also seems the I'm Drunk tag is not sticking to this.

Got the game yesterday along with Onechanbara: Bikini Zombie Slayers, but was too busy writing those Kororinpa impressions to play either.

Tonight is my night, bro.

There is a wealth of PerfectShot shells around here now, although they were hard to find about a year ago.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?

Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!

 about me

Hey. If you decide to add me on either of these, add a note that says you're from Destructoid and who you are on here. I usually ignore random some-guy-from-one-match-of-some-shooter friend requests, and I don't want to ignore Dtoiders too.

Hi Destructoid, I'm Taylor.

I live in Wisconsin. I probably drink too much, but apparently that's normal here. By day, I'm a web developer; people either don't know what they want or have terrible ideas. "I'd like a quote for a website." they say. I respond with: "What do you want the website to do? Lots of pages? Picture gallery or anything?". "I want to know the price before I think about that." they say, and I die a little inside.

By night I game, read comics and watch movies both good and bad--especially bad. The Sci-Fi channel has some magical formula to find out just how stupid to make a movie so it crosses the line and becomes so bad it's good(-ish) without becoming a parody. I think everyone should read Marvel Adventures, especially Avengers. It may be the "all ages" line, but can you remember the last time comics were fun? I don't, I was six in 1990. Marvel Adventures books are fun.

I started playing on the NES and had a Gameboy that was practically an extension of my arm, but I wouldn't say I became a gamer until the PSX days when I finally had a bit of income and could purchase games on my own, free from parental control.
