Here's a preview of the new entry into the Guilty Gear series. And below is an interview with its creator Daisuke Ishiwatari, where he revisits the history of the series, leading up to creation of Guilty Gear 2.
First of all, this was quite a surprise. When I first heard of this, I didn't know what to think, and I'm still kinda confused.
On the one hand, it's not what you'd expect for a Guilty Gear sequel. It's like Street Fighter doing kart racing. Or DOA doing volleyball.
On the other hand, I'm all for a developer trying something new. More game companies could use stepping away from what they're familiar with to take risks on a different genre.
Experimentation can yield good results. For examples, lesbians.
Although I guess I'm more concerned about interrupting the progression of a series still in the act of establishing itself. Guilty Gear is not brand new, but it's not as ubiquitous as it could be. And sure this game could help increase the series's reputation, granted that it has decent gameplay, release date, and marketing. Or it could be a flop and have deprived us of a proper sequel.
Yeah they're working on other games like BlazBlue and Battle Fantasia, but then why couldn't those games have been the RTS?
From the interview, Ishiwatari sounds pretty confident that this new Guilty Gear is the first to pull off a good mix of action and strategy, and is rather proud of it. That offers me some assurance, but then again what developer wouldn't want to appear enthusiastic about their game?
Personally, I still can't shake the image of Dynasty Warriors. Some would consider that a good thing, I'm still not quite sure.
Planned for release on September 2008 in the U.S., and maybe 10 years later in Europe. You can download the demo in the Japanese XBLA Marketplace now (though it's been out since October last year), Google on how to do that if you don't live there.
Just scouted out who the playable characters are. . . psht no Faust/Dr Baldhead.
I demand DMC style gameplay with a character that can turn into a small child and launch people high into the air with a baseball bat and a cry of "HOME RUN."
Goddammit..... This isn't a fighting game. Do they think we actually give a crap about the story or the characters? Guilty Gear pwns because it is a sweet-ass fighting game. What a wasted opportunity for a decent sequel.
I agree with his statement about the game's action/strategy mix. I feel that it was pulled off very well and that's why I'm looking forward to this game.
I like Warcraft 3 and Devil May Cry, but playing them at the same time doesn't work out too well. I am hoping this game will remedy that desire.
meh, I love the GG series but I see this being a flop as it was in Japan. (but then again, it's hard to strike an auidence in Japan if it's not a fighter. Especially if it starts off as a fighter then comes to this.)
I'll wait till it drops in price or something. I'll feel rather annoyed if I bought it at full price only to not like it.
You seriously dont think there havent been enough iterations of GG to warrant a different kind of game? This isnt a replacement for those at all, this is just something different.
I've played hundreds of hours of GG and its cool that we're seeing another side of the universe.
Mr Ishiwatari, just treat this as a brief vacation then get back to what you and your team do best. Kick ass 2d fighting games. Anyways, I think it will do slightly better here since alot of people still haven't had any exposure to the GG fighting games and will pick it up as a Dynasty Warriors fix.
I'd be terribly confused if I gave a crap about Guilty Gear. I love the artwork and music, but the gameplay isn't my cup of tea, and I absolutely love 2D fighting games. I do, however dig RTS...so this might be ultra-interesting.

Looks interesting... I'll have to see where this is going before really having an opinion.

Street Fighter doing kart racing? This is the closest you are going to get;
SleepingAgain: GGXX Accent Core Plus for PS2. There you go. (looks great on my HDTV with progressive enabled.)
