In light of recent events, I have inherited a pretty decent sum of money in the form of a refund check from my college. This could not have come at a better time seeing as how I owe the state of IL $350 in tollway fines, have some ugly credit card debt and student loans to pay, and the assorted video games that are due out that I want to get. But before I spend this money on "responsible" things, I thought I should give back to the community that keeps me sane and entertained at work.

So here is my contest….

The Tragic Hero Contest

Note: The prize is not $1000 unless you might be willing to win a punch in the face.


Although the name might imply it, the contest has nothing to really do with me but rather the concept of a Tragic Hero. For those of you who don't know, a tragic hero is (simply put) a hero who fails or suffers at the end of his or her journey. You can click here for a more proper definition but wikipedia's definition would just make the contest a bit more difficult.

So here's how you win, just make a post about a video game character who you would consider is a tragic hero and why he or she is one. There really isn't a wrong answer here just as long as you can convince me or make a good argument to why said hero is a tragic one.

For example: I could say that the main character from Fallout could be a tragic hero. He is sent from the Vault 13 to find a water chip to fix the water pump in the vault. After all his trials and suffering he finally gets the chip and returns to the vault, only to be exiled from it because life outside in the wastelands has changed him.

So despite the fact he has saved his fellow vault dwellers, he is expelled from the vault and made to traverse the wasteland the rest of his life. In my opinion, that makes for a tragic hero.

The Prize?

I will buy the D-toider with the best post any game of their choosing from the Steam Store. That’s right, any game that you want. So if you haven't had a chance to play Bioshock or if you want to try out The Club but don't want to waste your money on it this is your chance.

The Rules?

1. Only one post per member. Anyone who submits multiple posts will be DQ'd.

2. I will be judging the posts based on your arguments why said hero can be a tragic one. So you can pretty much choose any hero of your choice as long as you can make the argument why he or she is tragic.Note: By post I mean to make a Cblog, so if you posted a "entry" within my Cblog just use that info and make your own Cblog on why said character is a tragic hero

3. Obviously, you must have some sort of Steam Account in order to get said prize if you win. So go register on Steampowered.com and download steam if you want to win.

4. Last day to submit entries would be on March 7th and I will pick a winner the following day.

And I guess those are all the rules I believe. I usually only have access to Destructoid during certain parts of the day and the evening so if you want to make a post but are worried that I won't see it feel free to PM me the link to it or send an E-mail to tragichero83@gmail.com to make sure I see it.
