I'm not that big of a sniper fan, to be honest. It usually just ends up being a sniper vs. sniper war. Mjolnir has it right though, in that snipers CAN be very effective, but the people behind them rarely try to be. Sniper nests are a detriment to class, IMO.

There are 2 really good ways for a sniper to become useful to the team.

1. To surprise the enemy by moving locations, and keeping the enemy paranoid on whether a miss-step is going to get them a bullet through the eye socket or not. If the enemy knows that a sniper is going to be at the same place as usual, they'll just avoid that area.

2. Based off of that whole area avoidance point. If you DO want to just sit nice, cozy and un-scathed, that's fine too. Just be useful while you do it. If you're going to camp an area, make sure it's an area of use by the enemy. Cut that entire team off from having access to that one select path or area, making the enemy predictable easy to control.

Snipers are huge assholes. Their main useful function is to make it too dangerous for the enemy team to come out, at least in high traffic areas. Sniping can be fun at all, but one amazing sniper on the other team can make a game a hell of a lot less fun.

Reading this has made me want to play TF2. It seems it's made snipers physically weak, FORCING them to use superior tactics to be effective, and preventing the l33t from tanking as a sniper.

Now I really, really wanna play TF2.
