On the Topic of Resident Evil 5...

I really wish they would take me back to the streets of Raccoon City. Resident Evil 4 was great and all, but to me, it didn't feel like I was fighting biological weaponry, no, It felt more like I was battling aliens. RE4 was amazing really, but it lost it's suspenseful feel. When playing RE4, where you ever afraid of walking down that hallway? Picking up that item? No. Although, I have to admit, that oven did scare me.

It was disappointing playing RE4, especially to me. I never felt intimidated by any of the monsters. It didn't excite me at all! I can't tell you how good it felt to go back to RE3 and have adrenaline rush through my veins as I desperately pounded the buttons to escape the Nemesis ' grasp! It felt good to change my weapons, in order to deal with the variety of monsters I would face.

Not to say that RE4 didn't have cool monsters. The game was just lacking a lot of them. I was throughly freaked when I shot the legs off a monster, only to have it squirm viscously towards me.

And the addition of a Merchant, mini-games?

I think RE4 dropped the survival horror label and I really hope RE5 doesn't follow suit. I enjoy being frightened. I really do.

The only thing frightening about the first three RE games were the terrible controls. Try to remove your retro goggles.

Nothing seemed very scary on the gamecube. So, I just didn't notice the difference until now. But yeah, more real monsters woulda been scarier since I'm not afraid of people with different languages and customs.

I agree, it really dumped the whole horror thing for just intense encounters but i enjoyed it thoroughly. More-so on the PS2 than gamecube because all the bonus goodies where basically ret-con's along the vein of "omg no, umbrella still around lolol gotcha". I think that umbrella was the real menace in the series and i understand they thought it was growing stagnant but the fact was umbrella was the evil we so often found to be resident...
So yeah, i didn't like re4 that much because there was not nearly enough umbrella for me. Great game, but the story just didn't do it for me.
On a side note, i know everybody is tired of quick time events now, but god damn, the first time you got through that knife fight with krauser was epic...

C`mon, you cannot tell me you didn't freak when the licker came crashing in through the single sided mirror.

I was referring to the fact that the only reason the RE games were scary and tension filled during the actual gameplay sequences was because you couldn't manipulate your character for shit. RE4 didn't require on bad controls to up the tension, so naturally it was less scary. But as far as cheap jump moments, RE4 had plenty of those as well.

Just sayin.

Of course the first 3 RE games were scary.. cause before those games there werent any other games scarier than those.

@ DrNutt
Yeah, i agree, the scares in the old ones was the "oh shit im in a corner and cant actually turn around effectively enough to get away from the undead". Besides the "oh shit, im in a hallway with windows on one sides" que dogs...

If you're really looking for a scare, I suggest giving one of the Fatal Frame games a try. I played through all of the Resident Evil games and would get a decent scare (sans four, because you always had plenty of ammo and guns to confidently defend yourself from almost any situation), but Fatal Frame would regularly have me so freaked out that I would find something else to do just beyond that next save point.

Werd

Fatal Frame is definetly more creepy than RE.

But Fatal Frame doesn't have zombies :D

fatal frame never scared me.. resident evil never scared me besides the whole like "Sudden dog appearance" jump scares.
Silent hill however made me turn of my playstation, turn on my lights and then turn my tv off just to make sure.
Silent hill 2 ruined me...

 about me

I demand Final Fantasy Tactics!! None of that Bullshit advance crap, because FFTA was like taking a fully automatic Assault Rifle, sticking a knife upon the end and going boar hunting with it. It was a total step backwards!

Damn Squarenix bitches. Someone should slap them. Really.
