Incredibly enough, in my 6 months or so of being a member of the Xbox Live Gold service I have never come across the douchebaggery so often attributed to a select few of its members. Today changed that. I now have a new outlook on the definition of a douche. Apparently due to this adolescent's e-penis being immeasurably small, he felt the need to insult the fact that my Halo 3 service record was not as good as his. I simply cannot come to understand the mentality of a person who plays a videogame to verbally assault and belittle others. Do they find joy in spoiling other people's experiences? Are they so insecure that seek out a medium which grants them complete anonymity so they are free to express their wankerish ways? This Penny Arcade comic expresses my thoughts right now perfectly:

I've come across similar circumstances before, and although sometimes annoying, they are also quite hilarious.
Nothing beats you and a couple mates, slagging off another bunch of guys doing the exact same thing. Everyone's laughing, and makes the games much more competitive. :P

I find throwing back mild insults like "I bet you're really bad at math" confuses them so much that they stop.

Either that or you need to come up with creative, dramatic responses. For example, if the kid makes fun of your service record, tell him it's not actually yours. It's your brothers, but he died before he had the chance to get good at the game. Now you're honoring him by ranking him up. In fact, you're doing it as a fundraiser for whatever he died of and there is a local news crew in your house filming. Hopefully he doesn't mind being used as a soundbyte in the story.

I think levity is key in situations like you encountered.

If you think it's bad on LIVE try playing a subscription based MMO. I've met people who seem to pay monthly fees to spend 90% of their time trolling and being dicks.

Idiots like that are the reason that I don't often play random matches. If I go online it's usually with a group of friends. Either that or I just mute them.

What really annoys me are the racists and homophobes on Xbox Live. It doesn't make sense. Gamers are, at the moment, successfully battling the press to stop being called violent thugs. Instead, now, idiots like that are giving us the name of bigots.

I don't really have that problem. Hell, most PS3 users I play with don't even have a mic. It's awesome.

I absolutely LOVE the people who would talk trash to me on Gears and they would get shut down by me every single match. It was so funny saying "Why the fuck aren't you talking now noob?" .. then the whole game is silent because that loud ass finally got his ass handed to him.

The usuals. Gears of War, Guitar Hero 3, a bit of Burnout Revenege. I only recently got Halo 3, I guess its the best asshole finding game.
