The importance of having a f*cking avatar
Topher Cantler | 5:56 PM on 07.31.2009 97 comments

Wow. That shit's hard to look at, isn't it? So imagine then how we editors feel when we go to track our comments and see a sea of default avatars staring back at us.

Jim has already put this out there before, but since many people are either new here or have some serious problems with reading comprehension, I'll say it again:

Get a fucking avatar.

It's not hard. In fact, you can use just about any picture you want, provided it's work-safe, and in some cases it seems like even that's up for debate. I'm not sure why this is so difficult for you people. Destructoid is a nice place to hang out and discuss a lot of different topics, but it's hard to do that if nobody can tell you apart from this asshole:

Are you here to comment on my post, or are you here to sell me Air Jordans? If your avatar looks like that guy's, I have no way of knowing for sure. You've got a username, but do you have any idea how many of those I have to keep track of? 41,745 and counting. We get a lot of comments around here, and that's good because it means our little community is growing and we've got cool new people to talk to. But it gets to be a lot to read, and as I've said at least once or twice on Twitter,

If you didn't bother to take ten seconds to upload an avatar, I probably didn't take ten seconds to bother reading whatever it was you had to say.

It's simple, and it doesn't matter who you are. If you're here to hang out and make some friends by participating in the awesome community we have going, get an avatar so it's easier for us to recognize you when you come around. You're probably a pretty cool person, and if that's the case, we'd like you to stick around for a while. It would help everyone get to know you a lot faster if you had a face.

If you're here to casually participate in some thoughtful debate and discussion, or just let us know what you think of a post, get an avatar so the person who wrote said post will be more likely to pay attention. Even if Dtoid is nothing more to you than something to browse at work to pass the time, your thoughts and opinions are still valuable to us. Just because you're not here to stay doesn't mean we don't care what you think.

You wanna know whose opinion we don't care about?

Nobody gives a fuck what that guy thinks. He was well-spoken and had something really nice to say a few days ago, but then I saw him fanboying it up in some flamewar a few minutes later and typing like he had mittens on. The day after that, he posted 7 comments in a row linking to some company in indonesia that makes bathtubs. The guy's schizophrenic, you never know what the fuck he's gonna say. I stopped listening about 3 years ago.

So unless you want the rest of us (editors and staff especially) to completely ignore what you're trying to tell us, maybe you should get one of these little pictures that everyone has next to their name. Maybe a cute bunny, or a videogame character, or a pretty Korean girl, I dunno. Those are just things that I like, you can make it whatever you want. But for fuck's sake, make it something.

I agree, to an extent. I honestly think avatars aren't that important. I prefer to memorize people by their username. I'll eventually forget what their avatar looks like, but I'll remember their name for much longer. I guess that's just me.

Seriously though, everyone should at least take the couple of minutes required to get an avatar. It's absolutely amazing how much it makes a difference!

@Ckarasu: That works in some cases if the username is fairly memorable like your own, but for people who go by "gamething1234" or whatever, nobody is going to remember that without a pic.

I'm thinking of forcing an avatar upload after the signup process. Let me add that to my to-do list.

What's your opinion of changing avatars? Am I still recognizable this past week or are my witty observations and quips attributed to the 15 other people that have ProtoMan avatars?

Fuck you sexualchocolate if you're reading this.

I knew that was you, Tubatic. Changing them doesn't bother anybody, we just take a day or two to adjust to the new pic. Like I said, make it whatever you want, and change it as often as you want. Just have one.

@Duffy: I've always suggested that it should just be text that says "my words mean nothing" or "don't listen to me."

Also, I love that your pic is still all rainbowy after the gaybear thing.

why don't you make it so you HAVE to get an avatar in order to sign up make it an requirement that would put a stop to this immediately also http://cdnll-0.liveleak.com/u/thumbs/2007/Sep/2/257575_193_avatar.jpg

I couldn't agree more. I've passed on reading many people's comments because they didn't take the time to use an avatar when they signed up. It could have been a really insightful comment or thought but I didn't pay any attention to it. If you won't take the time to complete your account here I won't take the time to listen to what you have to say.

Yeah, definitely enforce avatar uploading for new users.
Avatars give some kind of personality after a while and when reading comments, you can quickly see who's responded. And who you have to ignore.

Even if your avatar is unimaginative. Like mine.

I think humiliating avatars would work better. Some people who ended up as community regulars have started out without an avatar too haven't they? Maybe they would've been put off by the required-avatar thing?

Not saying that everyone who has the default avatar doesn't suck though :D

If you enforce avatars, it might be enough to stop some of the more insipid idiots from signing up altogether.
Though it is a nice surprise seeing a well thought out comment and glance at the avatar to see the default avatar, it reminds you that the internet has got lurkers with value

Unfortunately, I think the types who lack avatars rarely frequent the c-blogs, and even fewer of them would be reading this and subsequently do something about it.

Most of the people who refuse to use avatars seem to be disinterested in the sense of community and more interested in trolling, flaming or advertising.

Avatars say so much about a person. I often find myself with such a predetermined image of a person in my mind that hearing their voice or seeing them in the RL creates such a contradiction in my mind that I have a minor stroke and wet myself.

I think avatars are important, but it's hard not to use one that a zillion people use. For example, after my time on kotaku, I can hardly stand prinny avatars.
I think a well-chosen avatar can add some mystique to a user, like Topher's beedog. I wanted to figure out what that was for about a year.

I think it is important to get an avatar because it makes you easily recognizeable. Although I may be a little biased because when I made my avatar and uploaded it and blogged about it it got into the weekly Destructoid recap and that was the first time I was noticed in the community.

I agree that avatars are really important. I mean, most of the people I recognize here, I do so through their avatars. Plus, I like my avatar, even though the picture quality is kinda bad.

Plus, if you don't have an avatar, you probably didn't get the chance to appear in that HUGE wallpaper some member of the community did using avatars from all the members. And that was AWESOME.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?

Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
