I need new headphones. [NVGR]
Topher Cantler | 1:30 AM on 05.10.2008 53 comments

So we've supposedly got this fat tax rebate thingy coming in the mail this month, and I was thinking that instead of spending the whole thing on bills and food, I'd take a portion of it and do something I haven't done in a very long time: buy something for myself.

What I really need is a new set of headphones. I mean real headphones. Earbuds = fail. I'm looking for big, gnarly fucking helicopter pilot headphones that sound great and keep the lethally sweet J-pop in while keeping subway noise and airplane engines out. Also, big old-school headphones look cooler.

Music is very important to me, so I'm really just calling on the audiophiletoids out there. Anybody own a good set they can recommend? Preferably under a hundred bucks?

Yay for Sennheiser.

Also, I usually use Icemat Siberia's when gaming.

Fuck yeah, big headphones are always cooler. I hate earbuds.

I use Behringer HPM1000 headphones, which I got for Christmas one year along with a guitar (After getting the correct adapter for the headphones, I proceeded to use them a lot more than the guitar).

They're not bad at all, especially for $10-20. I just now checked the price after owning them for a few years and I'm surprised they're so cheap.

I have these — I think I got them from Buy.com for $40, but whatever. The “noise canceling” doesn’t really work (I mean, it’ll cut out low volume, low-frequency drones — so, your PS3’s fan but not your 360’s), but they’re quite comfortable. The wind-up function can be a little overzealous; I recommend keeping your hands well out of the way of the plug when it’s winding up the cord because it does it really quickly. That shit hurts.

Oh, and here’s a CNET review, in case you’re interested.

But if you can afford it, I’d suggest getting Sennheiser or Koss headphones. Sadly, I couldn’t, so I had to settle for the JVCs :(

Ideally I'm looking for something like the ones in the picture I posted. I can't seem to find that anywhere.

I know, Google motherfucker, etc. I'm just wondering if anyone has a set they're really happy with before I go digging. Thanks for the recommendations, guys.

If audio quality is your priority, Sennheiser is the way to go, just find the highest end model within your price range.

Personally, I went through some Sennheisers and a Sony pair and ended up settling on these Technics just cos they're so comfortable.

Oh, whilst on their site, I've just noticed that this pair look remarkable like the pair your girl's wearing.

I have personally been wanting to check out those Bose noise cancelling headphones, but there's no way I can justify spending $300 on something like that. That's like, five 360/PS3 games, or six Wii games, or ten DS games!

In my opinion, the best headphones I have owned and excellent quality for the price.

And as you said you liked big, well, they're absolute beasts in that respect.

Incredibly comfortable and exterior sound reduction is pretty good, its like being in your own world. Love em.

I still use my Vic Firth headphones that I wear while drumming. Terribly large and uncomfortable, but the sound quality is decent and noise cancellation is second to none.

Maybe look for some Sennheiser HD 380s, they are really good. Might have some difficulty finding them though b/c they are from 3 years ago. They are closed back so will not let in sounds from outside unless they are really loud.

I, too, want some badass headphones.

I just use a pair of £70 Sennheiser SPs, but I doubt they are big enough. Perfect sound though.

I do want some nice big headphones, I do have a big Sony pair which lasted me a few years but the right side died a few months ago. I'm more than willing to splash out some significant money on a new pair, especially as iPod earbuds are like wearing a giant neon sign saying 'THINGS TO STEAL HERE!!'.

Wait, this many comments and no one has mentioned Grados? I guess that's how you can tell this a video game site and not a audiophile site.

I use a pair of earbuds for everyday use because of their convenience. For those of you that are dismissing earbuds altogether, try a pair of Shures and you will change your mind. However, for home listening, my Grados are the best. I've owned several pairs of Grados over the last ten years and they've all been great. Sure, they're "ugly," but I think that gives them half of their charm.

The SR60s are great; they were my first pair of Grados and clock in at a nice $70. The SR80s and SR125s are also good choices, but will cost you more. The SR325s are my newest pair and are incredible, but will cost you around $300. For the ultimate, go with the GS1000 (~$1000).

I would probably recommend the SR125s for you based on the previous comments. It seems like $150 is the price range you were looking into and I don't think you can find anything better at that price. However, if you just want something that will sound great and play well with portable devices, the SR60s are the way to go.

And, no, they're not "ugly"--they're "retro." You should be able to appreciate that.

Also, Budr is correct or recommending Sennheisers and Technics. I've had good luck with both in the past.

Personally, i use Sennheiser HD595s, but there open and wouldn't be suited for subways or trains. you probably want some big closed phones. Audio techina makes some nice closed phones, and the ATH-500s seems to be right in your price range. Also, the headphones in that pic you posted are Ultrasone Pro 2500s. Personally i really don't like the sound of Ultrasones at all, but some people love them.
Check out www.head-fi.org too, it's an entire forum dedicated to just high end headphones and related equipment,

They are not HUGE, but I have big ears, and these cover them well. Not noise-cancelling, but they really keep the rest of the world out- I ride the subway every day and usually can't hear anything but the JPOP unless the iPod is set very, very low. As far as sound quality, they are superb for everyday use. Build quality? Made in Japan.......nuff said.

Oh, and camo is the one to rule them all.

The pair I have aren't super HUGE like you may want, but they're a good size. Sony MDR-V150's. They've lasted me for years and I love the sound quality, and quite inexpensive, especially now. But again, not the biggest headphones, so maybe not exactly what you want.

If and when you decide what to get (if you haven't already), give an update! :)

Have had so many headsets/headphones (15+ easily), still doesn't feel like I've found "the one"... But also never went above $150, think that'll have to be the next step.

only about $130 on amazon
