Some of you may already know this stuff, so I guess it's more like 10 things you might not know aboout me.

1. I come from a long line of mechanics, and can probably fix anything from your car to your leaky pipes or your air conditioner. I'm even HVAC certified.

2. This also includes old gaming hardware, and a lot of my older systems and controllers have undergone surgery to keep them working or improve them. My Atari 2600 connects to the TV with a composite cable and my NES controllers have 8' cord extensions. :)

3. I have never played a single Metal Gear game.

4. I grew up in a predominantly black and Latino neighborhood, and spoke fluent Spanish until the age of about 7 or 8. Now I don't remember any of it. I do speak Japanese on a 2nd grade level, though.

5. I collect toys. Go nextdoor to Tomopop and click my name on the sidebar, you can see about half of my collection if you look through my reviews.

6. I'm a huge nerd/snob when it comes to tea. My kitchen contains a dozen different kinds at any given time.

7. My brother works on the Emeril Lagasse show. He's also done a bunch of work in film, including Body of Lies and the last Die Hard movie. Search IMDB for Benjamin Cantler.

8. My initial foray into the writing world was poetry. (Modern poetry, not "roses are red" or the emo stuff.) Some of it has been published and is still floating around out there. I'm also in the process of illustrating a children's book in my spare time.

9. I was badly electrocuted once and had a near-death experience. I spent about 15 seconds being dead before they revived me and rushed me to the hospital, and then I couldn't talk for 4 days afterward. It was neat.

10. I play guitar, bass, and a little piano, though I'm not very good at piano.

"9. I was badly electrocuted once and had a near-death experience. I spent about 15 seconds being dead before they revived me and rushed me to the hospital, and then I couldn't talk for 4 days afterward. It was neat."

Holy Shit that's awesome
Holy shit! You almost died ;_;
um I didn't know about no. 3,8,or 9 about you. :( I fail.
I've almost died a couple times. I was in a car accident about 11 years ago and came out of it with a ruptured temporal artery. I still have a chunk of glass stuck in my arm from that car, it's kinda neat. I really shouldn't be here. :3
Awesome. Reading lists like these make me realize just how unexciting my life is ;)
I got hit by a car while biking once but that's it for my near death experiences. And everyone is glad your alive right now, if you weren't Podtoid and RetroforceGo! would be more boring
Thank you Seigfreid, that means a lot. :)
A survivor ! You rock Topher!
Ya, Topher, you have a freaking awesome life! I also really love tea.
You used the Konami code.
Have you considered yourself as immortal? Because I seriously think you are...
3- Shame.

Damn, my dad works in HVAC. He's done work on Redskins Stadium and the Department of Homeland Security building. We have something (somewhat) in common!
Are you the Six Million Dollar Man?
so, I have a question about my car....
We now know your weakness Topher. Electricity.

PIKACHU I CHOOSE YOU!
Holy crap, you died and were rebuilt with dreamcast parts to make you stronger and faster. THAT's why you're so good at Ikaruga.

CONSPIRACY!!
"It's gonna take more than a couple thousand volts to stop me, bitches" is your new catch phrase.

Also I've been curious as to where/how you learned Japanese. I've been learning for a couple weeks now and I'm interested in checking out multiple sources to learn from.
dude, people totally know thing 5.
Topher = Unbreakable.

Seriously, I hope nothing like that ever happens to you again, mang.
I now know why you like and are so good at shmups... it all points to the electrocution experience. Also, I hate tea.
@our lord: Back to the long line of mechanics thing, my grandfather, uncle and stepdad used to build race cars. Being into that, I loved Speed Racer as a small child. That led me to other Japanese cartoons like Tatsunoko stuff, and I eventually started watching subbed anime in the early 90's. Finding fansubs often led to finding fan translations of Japanese games in the process, which led to straight up importing Japanese games, and 18 years or so of that stuff tends to sink in.

tl;dr: Animu, vidja.
I've electrocuted myself once, but not severely. That shit sucks. But to do it so bad you were dead and then couldn't talk? thats gotta REALLY suck.
I almost died in a car accident too! Seatbelt saved my life but ripped up my insides a bit. I hit my head and my vision was all woogly, it was awesome.
Good at repairs? Mind taking a look at a Dreamcast with water damage?
You know what I do know about Topher? He's awesome.
#1 is cool - I'll have to give you a call the next time I'm modding my mustang! The last one I did involved cutting my H pipes in several pieces to install exhaust cutouts. All of this was on the street too.
Topher I heart you. Just because I heart Hatsune Miku as well.
I'm so glad you're not dead.
Jasmine Pearls. That's all I have to say. It's like butter in tea form.
I'm now curious to know what your favorite kinds of tea are.
Is that why you can see ghosts?
Topher is immortal... and also awesome.
Thanks, Tofu :)
@Haxan: Lupicia makes most of my favorites, Sencha Ureshino green, Black Momo, black Muscat, Sakurambo. Tazo makes a very good breakfast tea called Awake and a very good Lotus blossom, which is odd because nearly everything else they put out there is made of fail, but those are also two of my favorites.
I'm also in the process of illustrating a children's book in my spare time.

If I ever have kids, I'm going to find a copy of this and they're going to get it read to them every night.

The more you know! :D
You have been one of my most overlooked editors here at Destructoid, and this list proves that I've been missing out, love your input on Podtoid.
I want to know what Topher music sounds like. Also, you are apparently Electric Dragon 80,000V.
Topher, you are invincible. If electricity can't kill you, nothing will.
is your brother the same one you posted a while ago that made a youtube video of himself singing queen? and by looking at his IMDB page, he does what i dream of doing soon.
Also I'm sure some sort of power was transferred to you in that experience that manifests itself in Ikaruga supremacy.
If I could be a superhero, I would be Tofu Cantaloupe
What Jim said.
@Ballistic: Wow, thanks!

@Icemax: Yes, it was! Good memory.

@Everyone: I was playing Galaga through to level 50-something back in the 80s, so no, it's not from that. That would be a cool story though.
Ok, if you can fix games and consoles, you need to post blogs about it. I want to beat Super Mario RPG and Super Metroid, but the batteries in those carts have died!!
I also have not played a single Metal Gear Solid Game. , I think we should hug Topher..... Also, Puppy Licks said it first! You are awesome!

Another thing though Topher. I always envisioned you as a fat guy. You reminded me a lot of Gerald from the Anime World Order Podcast. alas, you are not fat.

- Way to not play Piano. : )
@Lastskysamurai: I'm 6'3" and 170 pounds if that helps. :)
Wow Topher, as if we didn't know already, you're a very special person <3 But I WILL put a controller in your hand and sit on you until number 3 isn't true xD
I want to read that childrens book.
Your console mods sound interesting.

I'm also curious. is there any recorded topher cantler music?

Also thanks for being the first comment on my first c-blog ever.
Dude, you are a legend. What happened during the near death experience, do you recall much? Did it change your view of life?

And, is your tea interest just black/green teas, or do you venture into the multi-faceted world of herb teas? That sounds so lame, but me like a herb tea or three, and theyre great for your health too.....

And, along with the rest of the RFG team, youve brought increased euphoria levels to my life recently sir, and for that alone, I salute you! I also salute you for being generally sound as a pound. In a non-gay, non creepy way, i love ya man!
