World of Warcraft - Custom Character Art
Togail | 11:09 PM on 08.03.2009 9 comments

Hi guys, it's been a long while. I've been concentrating on freelance work for my company, Raven Harbor. You might recognize one of my employees ;3. This piece is a figure in repose of a Blood Elf Hunter named Teglimus. I had the idea to draw WoW characters for people to not only boost my figure drawing skills, but also to open myself to a potential market of 11 million people. It's still pretty early, but you can get a good idea of where I'm going with this one. Thanks for looking!

Prototype First Impressions
Togail | 11:16 PM on 06.09.2009 17 comments

I have to start this mini-review with the fact that I have a severe god-complex, and this game is my drug of choice. Prototype is an interesting beast, it's part hack n' slash, part GTA, part RPG, and I love it. There are, however, a few faults among the awesome that I'll point out below:

Graphics: 8/10
The graphics have been done much better, in higher profile titles. Graphics whores need not apply. Looks are somewhere between Saints Row 2 and GTA IV.

Animation: 8/10
Radical went a little light on fluidity of motion for Alex, but I've been surprised at the little slick parkour embellishes when I'm skyrocketing between buildings. It looks good, feels, good, but not as complete as it should be. Some questionable sneaking animations when impersonating a soldier, no one seems to notice the one guy who walks around like Solid Snake with a hunchback.

User Interface: 8/10
Very well put together, but the menus aren't infinitely scrolling, i.e you get to get end of the Upgrades menu and it doesn't cycle back to the beginning, it just stops. There's no way to set waypoints between areas, so it's kind of easy to get lost at first, but you'll start recognizing landmarks before long.

Presentation: 9/10
The game is fantastically presented; you will feel your power and flexibility of action grow organically as you unravel the mysteries behind your powers.

Voice Acting: 5/10
Some really bad compression issues with Alex's voice in cut-scenes, The actress playing Dana Mercer could use a few acting lessons.

Controls: 8/10
Alex is FAST. It's hard to get used to him moving around, because he is extremely responsive, which is great, but takes some finesse. Most of my complaints about the animation come from this. He moves really fast, and the momentum is not accurately figured into the equation sometimes. Alex feels flighty and weightless when you're trying to get him to haul his ass out of the way of a charging infected monster.

Music: ?/10
What music? I consume the minds and souls of the world. I am a god.
All kidding aside, the music is forgettable and really unobtrusive. I was so busy with killing that it didn't occur to me that there WAS a soundtrack.

Overall: 8/10 Above Average, Good Fun, Forgettable Audio
If you like annihilating a man by cutting him in half length-wise and then jumping 100 feet into the air to hijack a chopper, then give this a shot. Most of my complaints are technical, and have no bearing on the fun factor, which is a solid 10. The audio has some problems that are distracting from the story, but the radio/ped chatter in the open city is great.

A possible buy, definite rent.

Nintendo Art - Mario & Yoshi WIP
Togail | 3:38 AM on 04.28.2009 19 comments

Hey guys, this is the work in progress post of the Mario & Yoshi sketch from a week or so ago. It's still very rough and I'm figuring out what to do with it as I go. I'm also working on a time lapse video of this one to see if I want to do it again with other work in the future. Critiques are welcome!

Nintendo Art - Samus Aran
Togail | 10:30 PM on 04.23.2009 20 comments

HI guys, this is my painting for the day, Samus Aran from Metroid Prime. I sort of diverted from my horror genre theme of the month and instead did dark or evil versions of characters from random games I like. Either way, it's good stuff! This is my latest and most experimental piece, I combined Samus' Varia Suit and Zero Suit to form a hybrid of the two, and changed up a lot of the main body armor, as I felt it was too bulky. I wanted to make her a little more feminine and mysterious. I hope you like my work, and thanks for looking yet again.

Don't think I haven't noticed the calls for requests in the comment threads! I'll be catching up on those very soon.

Nintendo Art - Bowser's Industrial Castle (sort of, kinda)
Togail | 6:56 PM on 04.22.2009 18 comments

Another piece of work for the blog, this is a concept of a futuristic Super Mario landscape. I want to do something a little less menacing for the Mario & Yoshi piece, but I'm so happy with this one that I had to post it. This is sort of tangentially related to Bowser...the building has his name on it. It's in the same vein as his old lava castles and is spewing black ash and steam, is is built into the side of a volcano. There are also winged Koopas lurking near the lava pits. I'm probably going to do a lot more work with this one, just for fun. I also designed future versions of the SMB3 airships that I would like to do detailed shots of. I hope you like it!

Nintendo Sketches - Mario & Yoshi (short post, vaguely sappy)
Togail | 9:53 PM on 04.21.2009 14 comments

This is a quickie just before I head home from work. I took a realistic approach to this drawing, with a thoughtful Mario gazing into the distance with a feral looking, and more horse-like, Yoshi. Should I render this one into a full piece of artwork? I plan to create more of these in conjunction with my themed posts, it's good practice.

Also, a million thanks to each and every one of you who comment on my posts and who give kind words. Seig, you've been a constant supporter from the beginning, and I'm always watching for you. Ballistic, I appreciate your critiques and comments as well. Funktastic, Char, De Bloo, Mikey, and everyone else I can't remember off the top of my head, I'm extremely grateful that you take the time to look at my work. It really does help, and I love being able to improve and learn, and ultimately share what I do with all of you. It's been a continuing honor and pleasure.
