I'm still working on this same one, from
this post. There's a few things that are still unfinished and the lighting is a tad wonky, but I'll have it done in time for the new faculty gallery here at Full Sail. I can't wait. ;3
The overall composition here is one with multiple soft light sources, and one hard omni-directional light source from lower mid left, and is a traditional triangular composition with the hair sweeping down both sides of the face, which is the focal point of the piece. I'm trying to emulate the style of the Renaissance painters of old, who did religious paintings of the Madonna (Virgin Mary). This is just to keep a record of my progress, any comments or critiques are welcome.
A criticism of comment. D:
One thing I'm curious about - I've been tracking your progress on this one, and I'm assuming your working straight up digital with a tablet, correct? I ask because the inked linework in your previous blog is super-sharp, almost like it was done on physical paper with a nib. No matter how hard I try, I can't get super-sharp, smooth linework with a tablet. It's always just a little bit squiggly, no matter how I customize my brush and canvas settings. I'm curious if there's some kind of trick you use in Photoshop or Illustrator to achieve that precision, or if it's just my cheapo Wacom.
Oh, as for some constructive criticism, I might suggest lightning up the shadow detail on the forehead. Some of the fine detail around the eyelashes / eyebrows, as well as the decorative detail on the forehead itself become sort of blended together.
fetus: Also, a lot of shit on her head.
Y0j: One day, my training will allow me to render beards with some success.
Takeshi: Thanks!
graf: The flower is going to be rendered last, because it's the only purely organic part of the picture, I want it to look hot. It does pop really hard for the time being, because it hasn't been properly lit yet.
Thanks for all the comments and critiques! They're very helpful to me, I prefer that I get an outside perspective to keep my work honest.
I'll put the advice into memory. Just like Arkhon, I'm pretty sure I'm in Full Sail (next August, for Digital Arts and Design). Talked to an admissioner, had an interview, and sent in my application with a recommendation from him. :)
As for the art, top notch, as always. Wouldn't expect anything less. Sharp, amazing.
