First off I would like to say hello to the gaming community of Destructoid!

I am new to these parts and this is my first blog post.

So the end of the year is rapidly approaching and like most people I am reflecting on what games I have most enjoyed this year. Althought every year I formulate some kind of list in my head (last year went to Fallout 3 with Valkyria Chronicles coming in second) I decided to write out a proper list that may or may not help others decide on a which games to get for christmas. It will at least flex my decision making skills!

So here is where I need your help, There are many games that I have in fact not played and those could in fact be the best games in the world. So any suggestion on games to play is welcome. Also feel free to comment on my list or comment on anything else for that matter. Do you agree with my choices ?

I will eventually release a finalised version by "the holidays" (or at the very latest before the end of 09) that will feature the top ten and a small review of each of the games.

PS:Should this have been a forum topic?

Here is the list: (consoles indicated are the consoles I have or would play them on)

Resident Evil 5 in my opinion was not all it could have been. I'd bump that down from a "definite". If you've played RE4 there's really nothing new other than co-op.

Nice! Nick Cave and the Bad Seed!

As for me, I'm thinking New Super Mario Bros Wii might be my game of the year. It's not perfect by any means, but honestly, I feel like this year was filled with many great games, and very few amazing games. Out of all of them though, New Super Mario Bros Wii is the one I see myself still playing in 20 years. That, and the Bit.Trip games.

:D Gotta love the man!

New super mario bros is on my to buy list for sure! and I fully expect to love it!
I have to agree that the year hasn't produced as many amazing games as past years although I do think I could qualify the uncharted singleplayer as amazing.

And Afrowalrus (awesome pic btw) I do agree that resident evil 5 was a dissapointement after 4 but I still had an excellent time playing throught it 3 times with 3 different friends. I honeslty dont see it dropping from my top ten list but if one of those has to go then it would be the one to go.

My problem with game of the year determinations is that every good game that I play is definitely on the list for consideration. I just can't make up my mind!

Also, welcome!

Now this purely an opinion, and coming from a Beatlesmaniac, I think Lego Rock Band is superior to TB:RB. There's just only so much TB:RB could do within the confines of it's license to expand the series since we'll be waiting a little while longer for a true Rock Band 3. However LRB took the series in a very interesting direction. The Rock Power Challenges, the plot, the excellent setlist, I'm just gonna say if you didn't play LRB you should and if you did and didn't find it Best Of worthy, well that's you're opinion. I was not excited at all when I got it but it completely took me for a surprising ride.

Other than that your list looks nice. Arkham Asylum always makes me happy.

Also, while on the subject of music games (I'm a big music gamer) GH5 isn't a Best Of title but I think deserves honorable mentioning for bringing the series out of the shitstorm of Neversoft-era Guitar Hero games and onto equal footing with Rock Band. It kinda shows NSoft does learn from it's mistakes (most of the time).

I actually have a copy of Lego Rock band sitting around waiting for me to find batteries for my guitar controllers! I have never been a huge fan of the lego games but most of my childhood was spent playing with Lego so the ideo of a lego Iggy and a lego Bowie gets me excited to play it.

But I do think TB RB has a perfect setlist and visually takes the music game to another level but yes the lack of flexibility is a shame.

You are right on GH5, the ability to play whatever instrument you want is a brilliant idea and it is actually the best from a design point of view. I just dont think the setlist is really all that good.

And all my friends are beatlemaniacs so its all they want to play!

Hmmm... I would do games of the year in categories.

Best RPG - This is a tie, depending on the type of RPG you like.
Combat/Action centered = DEMON'S SOULS
Story/Character centered = Dragon Age

Best Shooter - Tie again
Multiplayer Centered - MW2
Co-op Centered - Borderlands

Best Sports Game - MLB: The Show, best graphics I've seen in any game in a while.

Best PS3 Game: Toss up Demon's Souls and Uncharted 2.

Best XBOX 360 game: I guess ODST, sorry I don't play HALO.

Best Action Game: Uncharted 2

Best New IP: Borderlands or Demon's Souls

Game of the Year: Too tough to pick one but IMO it's between
Borderlands
Demon's Souls
Uncharted 2
Dragon Age
