Yes We Can...Make a Gamer Out of Barack Obama
ThisYearsPink | 10:48 PM on 06.30.2008 27 comments

I support Barack Obama. Officially. Passionately, even. I saw him speak at a rally and was captivated from start to finish. I will vote for him in November.

This is why it hurts all that much more when I hear him sneak into his speeches occasional jibes at video games. I have to wonder how he can call John McCain “out of touch" when he probably doesn't even know that people on his own community blogs are posting instructions on how to make an Obama Mii.

For a moment, I thought my sentiments may have been those of a single voice. After a little research (read: googling), I discovered that I was actually part of a chorus of millions (okay, maybe a few less) of disenchanted video game players who also feel unsettled by Senator Obama's comments. And, why shouldn't we be insulted? Does he mean to imply that he truly thinks playing violent video games directly leads to acts of violence? I've taken issue with that since it was movies instead of video games, and I'm certainly not going to stop being affronted now.

But then I started thinking about what I really heard Obama say. Parents need to turn off video games and spend time with their kids. Kids need to turn off video games and work harder on achieving in school. To be a better country internally, we need strong families who support and love their children, encouraging them to become upstanding members of society. To be a great country on the global stage, we need individuals to work at becoming self-motivated and highly-educated, propelling our country ahead on the science and technology front. Gee, I can't argue with him there.

I agree particularly with Obama's assertion that "the government can't do everything." I do think that parents need to spend time with their children, control their children (in a positive way), and encourage their children toward success. As a teacher, the blame is always put on me when my students do not achieve. I happily accept that burden, but I see too many kids that could really shine with just a little more support from home.

But why make video games the scapegoat? I'm sure some kids probably do drugs instead of playing video games. Why not tell parents, "Make your kids put down the drugs and pick up the school books." At least then you don't offend anyone. Even people who do drugs generally agree that they are "bad." Or better yet, tell parents that if they let their kids play a video game, they should sit down and try it out, also. Father and son could play Grand Theft Auto together...then discuss the game, talk about the differences between the fictional world of the game and the real world around them. If it's a matter of making our kids smarter, there's certainly a path to intellectualism through video games. Destructoid is a perfect example of that.

I certainly don't think video games are the only activity families should do together, but I don't think they have to be completely excluded either. And I really wish Barack Obama would sit down (or stand up if he prefer) and try out Wii Bowling. I can almost guarantee he would enjoy it.

What game do you think would make Barack Obama change his mind? Maybe we should each send him a message to make a suggestion.

Obama's probably the closest we'll get to a "gamer's friend" in politics until our generation is old. He's pro-net neutrality, and disagrees with Hillary, Leibermen, and the others who would waste millions on regulating video games.

That said, I find gamers tend to get overly protective of their hobby. Surely one wouldn't agree that there are many cases of kids/young adults opting to be lazy and play games rather than go get a job or do their duties? I'm not saying we all are, but to say there aren't is foolish.

And I'll be voting for Obama come November too... and may kill myself if McCain gets elected.

You think Barack will do better at Wii Bowling than he did at the actual bowling alley?

Anyway, I agree with Novakaine with the fact that I think he is the most gamer friendly. Here's to getting Obama in office!

And, another great article! I'm really liking your c-blogs :D

I like Obamaman and his views on pretty much everything. I don't necessarily think that his comments about video games have been derogatory, depending on how you look at them, and you have outlined that in your 3rd paragraph.

I think the main point he is getting across is that the current trend of the average lifestyle in America needs to change. Less fast paced and go go go, fast food, movies, video games etc etc, and more about education, health and family, and if you ask me, there is nothing wrong with that.

As much as I love video games, and I do, I spend almost every waking moment I'm not at work playing video games, but if play time it is not regulated it can have seriously adverse affects on other aspects of the child's life, like education and family. I'm sure we've all seen the plethora of "insane gamer" videos; counter strike and WoW nerds going insane over dying or something.

I'm not American, but I would definitely vote for Obama. He is exactly who the US needs in power right now. Somebody intelligent, somebody who listens to the people, somebody willing to think laterally....hell, somebody who is a stupid retard hick who's election was rigged by their daddy.

SKRIBBLE did a better job conveying what I was trying to say. What I get a lot from Obama is a message of moderation, and to stop laziness, man up, and know your role. It was awesome how he went to the 'burbs of Detroit and called out all of the fathers who are failures as role models for their children (or absent from their kids' lives).

I think it's telling that when Obama got the Democratic nod, the major newspapers of the world's nations had "Obama wins Nomination" plastered on their front page, and they were excited about it. I think he's the perfect figure for the country right now, and I'd be absolutely crushed if he doesn't become president.

Exactly. Well said.

Theres also a part of me that thinks he is too good to be true and will be assassinated by some black hating, inbred Texan.

This is a nice post. I didn't know Obama said that. It was a bit disheartening but I think being an adult now I could care less. I think he just wants younger kids to grow up right so they can make decisions off of what they learn by experience, not video games. That said, I have played video games ever since I was at the age of 5 or so, and have loved them since. Was I brought up wrong? I agree with your "making video games the scapegoat" comment. But I think he was just using it generally and as one activity of many that he finds fairly unmotivational. I don't think he was directly attacking video games, but I guess we don't quite know yet. Either way, I'll be voting for Obama. Video games aren't going anywhere. (knock on wood)

I'm thinking his statements of putting down the video games are a nod, at least, to the fact that games are a big part of American Culture, at least in their ability to reach so many people.

Given enough time, I believe he would find Wii gaming quite favorable, as the spirit of many games are one of either family participation or of being more active and engaged.

What I would not want him to see/experience is X-Box Live. No great opinion of games or gamers can come from that as your premiere experience with modern gaming.

Also, please continue to bring the political thought to D-Toid. It definitely video game related and at least a few people can definitely appreciate it :)

This was a great blog, thanks for writing it.

I agree with you completely. I support Obama as well, but I think he needs to be more clear about what he means, instead of just using video games. Lots of things can distract kids from schoolwork, videogames included.

I blogged about this way back when Hillary was still in the running. I agree with everything you said.

@Tubatic
I agree that Xbox Live's general population would be a terrible introduction to modern gaming. However, if somebody showed him how I can still play video games with my little brother even though I don't live at home anymore I think it would give a favorable impression of XBL. It's all in how you spin it.

While I agree that Obama is better than the alternative, as the "netroots" a.k.a. average person being given a voice, we keep having to constantly remind him where his support came from and call him out when he betrays his main theme of unity and "new politics" in such instances as creating a straw man by attacking video games and especially, his acquiescence to and support of the destruction of the 4th amendment.

I joined your Obama group, please join another important one.

I agree with what you're saying. He's not taking shots at video games directly, he's just using it as a means to tell parents to have better control over their kids. In fact, I believe he said something earlier in the campaign about how he doesn't think video games cause violence in children...which is a lot different than what we would get if Hillary won.

I never really got upset when he made those comments. Video games have long been used as an example of what kids do instead of doing more productive things -- homework, going outside, family time, etc. I felt he was just trying to make a point. Of course, it's very cliche and it's sad to see him resorting to something so cliche, but it could have been worse. He could have been Hillary.

I'm not sure we're quite at the place where we can legitimately expect people of Obama's standing to really sympathize with gamers and enjoy games. I don't think we're there, yet. (But then Huckabee supposedly, seriously rocked the Guitar Hero a bit, so who knows?)

Very good blog. I'm excited to see a new person who writes so well. Please stay! :) It's also a relief to see a teacher who actually writes like a teacher. I've seen a few too many teachers who are absolutely atrocious, when on the internet. Welcome!
