Me: Hi, I'm your math teacher.
Student: I heard you have a live account.
Me: Uh...yeah.
Student: What do you play?
Me: Halo. Rock Band. Arcade games. Whatever.
Student: You any good?
Me: No? I mean, you know, not really.
Student: Oh, okay.

Logan Griffen, played by actor David Blue, made an unremarkable debut on CBS's now canceled series Moonlight. At first, Logan just seems like your average primetime techie. He has all the gadgets and brains he needs to help the main characters hack whatever, whenever they call on him. Just check out the basement where he lives:
Logan takes a call from Mick St. John. Mick needs him to "triangulate the location" of someone who's been kidnapped.
Now, I should probably mention that Logan is also a vampire. You can even see his glass of blood in the picture above. That's just part of the Moonlight canon. On the show, "vamps" more often buy than bite when it comes to the procurement of blood. But, I digress. It's not Logan's fangs and super-strength that make him interesting to me. It's not even his triangulation skills.
According to Mick, "Logan is the vampire version of a slob," but I don't see him like that. Instead, I see Logan as the vampire version of...a gamer. One of the first games Logan plays on Moonlight is Guitar Hero.
"Check this out. Expert level. I'm playing my new coffin guitar, and I just activated...star power!"
In the next episode, when Mick stops by the basement, he again finds Logan with a plastic guitar in hand. Mick asks, "Is that all you do?" He clearly means to imply that Logan does nothing but play Guitar Hero. But, wait! Logan is obviously playing a different game entirely.
Anyone with Rock Band will recognize that Fender Stratocaster. I wonder if Logan got a defective one like I did?
Logan doesn't bother spelling out the differences between Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Instead, he simply counters Mick's demeaning question with, "No. Tuesdays and Thursdays I rule World of Warcraft." I suppose the next few episodes of Moonlight must involve only Tuesdays and Thursdays, because Logan is noticeably absent from them.
Fortunately, Logan comes back in full force in the last episode of the season. He is an integral part of Mick's plan to rescue a vampire who has been arrested by the L.A.P.D. Mick asks him to hack the city's traffic lights so the police transport will have to stop and go when Mick wants. Logan agrees, but insists on a the code name of his choice.
"Can my code name be Lando Calrissian?" I know it doesn't hint to his gamerness, but it's pretty hilarious anyway.
When things don't work out as Mick had hoped, he calls on "Calrissian" for assistance. If you've gotten this far, the clip below is a must watch.
And with that final and fateful scene, Logan earned my respect and admiration. He goes down as the first entry on my list of "favorite fictional gamers."
My "favorite fictional gamers" are Seth Rogan and Paul Rudd, and their best "fictional gaming moment" is in The 40 Year Old Virgin when they are playing Mortal Kombat and having their "You know how I know you're gay" moment. This was a CLASSIC video game moment !!!
"Do you know how I know you're gay? You listen to Coldplay."
If you guys want to see video game stereotyping as it's absolute worst you should check out CHUCK on NBC. They really go out of their way every episode to make Chuck and his friends seem like the biggest gaming nerds, and honestly they just make us all look bad. I just really don't like how they portray the gaming community.
@SilverDragon: But I LOVE Chuck. The guy and the show. Maybe I'll feature him in my next "favorite fictional gamer" post. I mean, I definitely understand what you're saying about the stereotypes thing, but it's the first step toward integration into mainstream. I know this may sound like a stretch, but it's kind of like when African Americans first started getting roles in films. They had to play stereotypes at first, but that broke the barrier and made way for more realistic roles for African Americans.
Besides, what can I say? I find goofy gamers types like Chuck adorable.
@Thisyearspink: Don't get me wrong I also love CHUCK, and by that I mean the show, not the guy. I mean don't get me wrong I think Chuck is the man, but I don't "love" him or anything. It was one of my favorite new shows last year, and I look forward to the 2nd season, but I just wish they would find a way to include gaming without making it seem like we are all complete and total nerds.
I can see your point however that it is a first step toward integration into mainstream, but they could be a little more suddle about it you know. One main reason they are not suttle though is because they use the show to sell video games. Have you noticed this? I swear there were a couple of episodes in season 1 that were pretty much straight advertisements for Call of Duty 4. If they are trying to integrate gaming into the mainstream, could they at least do it without making it a huge advertising platform for specific games.
@SilverDragon: I'm all for collecting data, but why would I keep count of Crunshii's proposals? Don't you know that you always counter "obsessive stalker" with "cool and disinterested"?
As for Chuck, I guess I didn't take it as a huge cross marketing campaign. I just thought it was what the writers/producers were playing at the time or were excited about. I'm probably just being naive since television shows are only made for one reason--to sell stuff. But, at least I'm able to rationalize it and keep myself happy :) Oh, and I think Chuck may be canceled. If you have intelligence to the contrary, please share.
@Thisyearspink: I honestly have never had anyone stalk me before so I do not know proper protocal for dealing with such a situation. In this case this ever does happen though I will remember your advice to act "cool and disinterested."
I can't believe you haven't heard that Chuck is being renewed for a second season. The show apparently got great rating and had quite a huge following. We will be seeing more adventures with Chuck in only two more months. I personally can't wait. :-)
Hooray for Chuck! Thanks for the intel. Speaking of secret agents, I just saw Get Smart and it was lovely. Why am I talking about that here? Where else could I talk about it? Crap...
Sayid's Iraqi friends were seen playing Half-Life: Decay on an episode of Lost. I wouldn't say they're my favorite fictional gamers, but that's probably my favorite reference. Lost and Half-Life, two great tastes that go great together.
My favorite fictional gamer would be me. Because I don't really exist.

I didn't know Moonlight was canceled, though... I'll have to NOT download them and see what it was like.
@Pedrovay2003: If you watch the entire season, you'll definitely see WHY it's canceled. That is said with the full love of a fangirl, mind you :)

that, THAT, was pure awesome.
And that video was fantastic.
