Me: Hi, I'm your math teacher.
Student: I heard you have a live account.
Me: Uh...yeah.
Student: What do you play?
Me: Halo. Rock Band. Arcade games. Whatever.
Student: You any good?
Me: No? I mean, you know, not really.
Student: Oh, okay.

If I learned anything from my co-workers' enjoyment of Rock Band, it was that non-gamers can be made into casual gamers if introduced to the right game.
This is why I think Rock Band is a "Gateway Game." It can be used to lure your friends and family--you know, the Wii demographic--into the very fun and awesome world that is "gaming." Gateway Games all share three qualities.
>>1. Simple Controls<< One thing any great Gateway Game must have is a simple control scheme. While the menus might be a slight challenge at first, once in the "quickplay" section of the game, my co-workers had no trouble picking and starting new songs. Beyond what's on the screen, the Rock Band peripherals are extremely easy to understand. The most trouble I saw someone have was not understanding that, when using the guitar, you don't have to push the button and strum at the exact same time. Honestly, though, I think that was more from lack of experience with a real guitar. After about three songs, this particular player got it down. In fact, she wouldn't give up the guitar for most of the night. I think she even moved up from "easy" to "medium."
If you're this awesome at playing a real guitar, you will have no trouble playing the Rock Band guitar. In other words, even if you completely and utterly suck, you can rock out in Rock Band.
I think a good rule of thumb is that if you can explain the controls to someone in less than ten seconds, with no more than two follow-up questions needed, then you have a Gateway Game.
>>2. Like Something in the Real World<< I see the ads all the time. Wii Sports. Wii Fit. But why don't I ever see Wii Dragon Slaying? Non-gamers need to be able to look at a game and instantly understand what it's about.
This is Wii bowling. What? Wii Bowling. What? Wii Bowling. Ohhh, we bowling!
Just like the non-gaming segment of the population isn't going to be willing to learn a complicated control scheme, they aren't going to want to try to understand the rules of a fantasy world. Imagine if you had to explain Twilight Princess to someone who had never even heard of Zelda. "And then you turn into a wolf. If you want to dig, just waggle your remote." Compare that to, "This is Rock Band." There's nothing to explain. They see the instruments and it instantly makes sense.
Any game that draws inspiration entirely from the real world has potential to be a Gateway Game.
>>3. Fun to Play Socially<< Peer pressure can be a positive thing.
I have no idea who these guys are, but I bet by the end of the night, the guy on the right was screaming, "Hooray Rock Band!"
When a game has a fun and easy multi-player mode, everyone wants to get in on it. They just can't resist. Mob mentality put to good use. If you let your non-gamer friends take a stab at Rock Band, more often than not, they will want to play it the next time they come over. The experience of the game is intertwined with the memory of the fun social experience.
Games that bring 'em back and keep 'em wanting more are definitely Gateway Games.
I'm certainly not implying that if you let your best friend play Rock Band, he'll instantly become a hardcore gamer. These things take time. But Gateway Games do break down people's walls and eliminate the stigma that video games create for some people, and there's nothing wrong with that.
Rock Band is a gateway to awesomeness. Unless you play it with your dad who thinks he's so hip and cool, and that Huey Lewis and The News is the greatest band ever.
This is totally true.
All the non gamer friends (99.9% of them)that laughed at me when I was explaining how I had a game that made you think you were actually rocking, said after playing: "you were right, this is totally fun."
No sarcasm intended, but I thought this was very obvious. Shoot, it's part of Nintendo's strategy with the Wii--get people who normally don't play games to get a taste of it, then have them slowly but surely "graduate" to deeper levels of games.
I salute you - another day, another post.
Rock Band gets everyone to play though. Nobody wants to be the douche that is left out.
We never have any parties where I work. I might try bringing the Wii in if we ever do. I tend to forget that summer school is only a few hours a day. I work the whole day.
Still working on getting my mom to try the Wii, never even played Intellivision when I was younger.
I hope we get to a point where you don't need to "get" anyone into gaming anymore. They will just be willing to try it the same way people will just go see a movie or read a book. I want people to get over treating gaming as if it's some kind of counter-culture when it should just be culture.
@Mxyzptlk:
I'm so horrible at singing I have to use a terrible southern accent doing my best redneck impression (so yeah pretty bad) to even get close to hitting the notes on easy.
I don't see how it will transistion anyone from casual gaming to regular gaming. It doesn't get them used to the normal controllers. The genre is incredibly different from typical games. And it's very pick up and play, while other games tend to need a certain amount of time devoted to them.
Also I'm not saying these things are bad. I just don't see rhythm games inspiring people to move onto other genres.
I taught two tequila promo girls how to play Eyetoy Play 2 once. They loved it so much they made me write them a list of all the stuff they needed to get up and running with it at home. Total gateway game.
@TheRemedy: I agree. I was only trying to say that it could help non-gamers become casual gamers. People who would normally be totally unwilling to even try a video game.
@All GH fans: True. My own personal experiences of sharing a music game were with Rock Band so that's what I focused on, but I also enjoy Guitar Hero and look forward to #4.
@Novakaine: You'll come to find that I'm pretty good at stating the obvious :D
I'll give the nod to Rock Band. I tried for months and months to get my girl friends to play Guitar Hero 1 and 2, and they never would, or said "maybe later".
Once Rock Band came out, and the whole band experience came in to play, they were far more apt to play. Not to mention, the song selection began to vary, covering many more interests. Now, a friend who once told me she had no interest whatsoever in playing has a PS2 and GH 3 and 80s, and badly wants a 360 for Rock Band.
Now she's even contemplating WoW...though, as a WoW player, I don't know how I feel about that...
I must agree with all of this. If there's one game that I can get a bunch of drunken non-gamers to play (and enjoy for hours) it's Rock band. I'd have to agree that this is exactly why.
Yes I totally agree that Rock Band is a "gateway game", however I do not believe it is the ultimate gateway game. I whole heartedly believe that Wii Sports is the ultimate gateway game. For all of the people I have gotten to play Rock Band who don't play video games, I have gotten even more family and friends to love and play Wii Sports.
Please don't think I'm trying to take anything away from Rock Band's greatness. It is still an incredible game, and is still indeed a gateway game. I personaly think the guys who work at Harmonix are all musical gaming geniuses. I honestly don't think we have even begun to how they will eventually change the music and gaming industry. You just wait ...
BTW ... is that you playing the guitar in the video Thisyearspink?
@Thisyearspink: Well whether you suck or not (which I will not give my opinion about) it took a lot of guts to put your self out there to be judged. I have been playing guitar for 8 years now and I wouldn't have the guts to video tape myself playing.
Have you ever seen videos of what people look like while playing Rock Band. It's freaking HILARIOUS !!!
I just don't like Rock Band as much as Guitar Hero. It is probably because I don't like to sing and the guitar area of the game just doesn't feel as fun to me. In groups though, the fun level of the game goes way up. I agree that it is a gateway game though, definitely.
That's adorable! I love playing Rock Band, mostly singing or lead guitar. You're dead on with your articles, any obvious nature doesn't matter. The way you write it is entertaining and articulate!
I don't enjoy Rock Band or Guitar Hero games. While I think they are cool in theory, I actually play guitar and I'm in a band. When it comes down to it, I think we all can agree and know that Guitar Hero is not like playing guitar. That South Park episode pretty much sums it up. Still, if you want to play video games, then play a video game...if you want to play music, pick up a real instrument that doesn't weigh a pound and is made out of cheap plastic.
@Pumpy- Can your band play Freebird? Can I grab one of your guitars and magically have the skills to play Sweet Child O' Mine?
Video games provide an outlet to do things that are impossible to do in real life. Of course Guitar Hero is not like playing a real guitar. They both have one thing in common though- They're both fun as hell.

Never asked for my number though... =(
