About Me

I'm Dan and I love everyone.

BTW! I do edit Wikipedia, so ladies! Call me sometime!

It is my belief that the world of gaming is like three different nations at war with each other, with separate entities under their control, much like PMCs. The countries of PS-Triple, Xbawks, and Wiitendo use these PMCs to further their cause and attempt to eradicate the other side. Games have changed; HD-equipped consoles carry HD-compatable games, use HD-compatable hardware. Games have changed...

This is why I love Japan

ShortBlog: Cooperative Play Ruins RE5
TheDreadHawk | 8:34 AM on 02.05.2009 12 comments

With the new trend of Online Co-Op (and a similar trend of split-screen multiplayer going into a decline) one of the main selling points of games nowadays is that big bullet point on the back that says "Cooperative Play". In many ways co-op games are perfectly acceptable, Halo 3's co-op is what made it much more memorable and enjoyable for folks; Call of Duty: World at War utilizes the mechanic very well in a similar way, and Left 4 Dead's entire gameplay is based around it. But there are some games that just don't work very well in co-op: namely Resident Evil 5.

Now I can see the appeal of Resident Evil 5's co-op, but it makes no sense. The game's intensity is ruined by having a person always there to help you out. The game essentially turns into Army of Two, simply because of the addition of co-op in a game that doesn't need it. While most would complain that the daylight setting, the plentiful ammo and generic, frighteningly boring enemies are the reason there is no fear, I say that it's because you have that second person standing next to you, whispering gentle reassurances into your ear and generally saving your bottom every time shit hits the fan.

But what makes the game's demo even worse is that you're FORCED to play with that second character. In Resident Evil 4 we had Ashley, but she did not add anything to the fight at all. She was more of annoyance if anything, and you had to protect her. Now you have Sheva, who can basically hold her own against anything Chris Redfield can, and so that makes the game a drag: it eliminates the annoying follower, but creates a slightly over-powerful, annoying sidekick with the A.I. of a mannequin.

If I wanted to play Army of Two, I'd play Army of Two.

You know I actually hadn't thought of that. Co-Op does kind of make it less scary. I guess it could easily switch to more of a "panic" scary if they limited resources and upped the enemy count.

I have only played the demo, and from what I have played so far I like the co-op. I don't thing the game is suppose to be scary but intense. I guess Capcom wants you to feel a sense of urgency and overwhelming by all the villagers. Its not 'fear you cant forget' that is plastered in all those weird ads. I think the co-op mechanic works and playing it with another person online is pretty kool.

I played in co-op and had a lot more fun than my single player play, which wasn't terrifying, just frustrating.

If you want RE4 then play RE4. Seriously, all these stupid RE5 hate blogs need stop. Can be please hold reservations until the full game is released? All relevant discussion on the demo should have concluded weeks ago with the Japanese release that all the serious fans downloaded.

I thoroughly enjoy co-op. The shared experience of the demo was awesome. Going through the different scenarios and making strategies for each of them was amazing, especially with my best buds.

The scare is gone, but I think that is mainly due to the atmosphere. It isn't that scary to begin with. I think if RE4 had been co-op it still would have creeped me out.

So until we've seen all the environments and actually played the retail game we won't really know.

I disagree, Dread. Many of the fanboy are saying crap about RE5 controls and whatever, but the great addition of co-op is another improvement they overlooked. Why? Because it build upon Capcom's previous development experiments with RE0, where the character switching mechanic made that game unique.

If GC had been online like it was supposed to be, it would have made RE0 a much better game, with online play. Also remember that Capcom also learned valuable lessons from RE Outbreak (their first online RE games), and are still learning more, with Lost Planet, and Monster Hunter on PSP and Wii.

I'll hold judgement til I have a copy (you should too), but I feel its a good step forward for the series. It'll be nice to know someone else has my back when the hordes arrive, limited ammo or not.

I think it's a great addition, though I worry the bitch will get in the way when I play by myself.

The game isn't really about fear anymore, which is a shame, but at least it got replace with what I feel is an amazing action game.

And I still think there will be some scenes to get you scared.

@Cowboy TTop

You know, I damn near forgot about the cooperative aspect of RE0 and how much I enjoyed that. I don't know, maybe it was the fact that that game was actually more frightening, or whatever. I will reserve judgment until I play the full game, but a demo is meant to display what the game will be like, and I have to go off of that for now.

Also, Brando, I'm not saying it should be just like RE4, I like the direction the game is going, but the co-op infuriates me in the demo.
