Can A Community Ruin A Game?
TheDRMaster | 7:57 PM on 11.21.2009 15 comments

[WARNING: You are about to write an extremely whiny rant. Brace yourself!]

You reload your M4. You look down the sights. No enemies anywhere. You walk down the corridor. Boom. You died. A camper has struck again.

I'm sure you have encountered this; campers have been running rampant in MW2. These people care more about getting points than playing the game. And yes, although it seems a bit bold of me to say it, but there IS a wrong way to play Modern Warfare 2, and camping is NOT a legitimate strategy.

Don't get me wrong, Modern Warfare 2 is a good game. A great game, even. I've told myself many times to persevere, but these people are making it very hard to enjoy this otherwise brilliant title. The fact that they can use weapons that kill you in one shot (FAMAS, Intervention, etc.) doesn't help either. Before you flame, think about it: Doesn't it piss you off when the same person kills you two or three times before you finally kill him because he's sniping you from afar? Doesn't it piss you off when you go 30-50 seconds without seeing an enemy because they're all hiding around corners? It should.

We didn't have this problem with CoD4, I don't see why this problem has grown so out of hand. I am sorry to say that the shining quality of this great game is being dulled by it's awful community. We SHOULD persevere and show these campers whose boss, but it's becoming extremely frustrating. So, can a community kill a game? Maybe. I sure hope not.

I thought campers were common in most FPS games. I wouldn't know, though. I don't do multi-player.

Unfortunately, campers and the like will show up everywhere and there's nothing we can do about it. Flip a flashbang around the corner or something. C'est la vie.

Welcome to the Call of Duty series!

It seems like you've found out the core proponent of the series, and don't want to admit that killstreaks encourage camping.

You can:

1) Sell the game
2) Tactically camp

It's up to you! Camping is very easy to counter, with Semtex, flashbangs, Knife/Speed builds, and sniping, by the way, forcing you to move camping spots a lot: hence, tactical camping!

Also, Marathon, Cold Blooded and Ninja (Pro) can help you sidestep those campers.

Blame the killstreak rewards actively encouraging camping.

Camping's been around forever. If it hasn't killed the FPS (or even given it a flesh wound, as the case appears to be) by now, I think the genre will be just fine.

the community can not just ruin a game ( looking at Halo ), they can even ruin a whole console... except for playing with my friends in 'private' games online, I don't venture into XBLive territory anymore due to the complete absence of any form of inteligence in 90% of the people you meet online...

Luckily on PS3, those jerks don't have the money to get a decent headset, so you're not as bothered by them...

and yes, Camping sucks like hell, but as said before it is hugely encouraged in MW due to the killstreak-rewards...

Camping is a actic that is either used for being a douchebag or actually cooperating.

For example, spawn camping is a total douchebag move. While sniper camping in one spot is tactical because you also get the risk of getting shot by another sniper easily.

Sniping gets easier in every game, unfortunately. This affects ALL games.

@Mon
Yea, spawn camping is awful: I haven't seen that yet though.

I hate campers but sometimes I do it without realizing it. In KZ2 for example, if I'm using my boost badge & shotgun combo and someone throws a spawn-grenade right by me, it is very hard to walk away from all the free kills I am about to get. Games that are much more objective-based tend to lessen the impact of camping though. Vehicles seem to really help too.

Maybe I'm a jerk, but I thought camping (at least on well designed maps) was just legitimate strategy. What's the alternative extreme? Running around in the open hoping to run and gun? Not that I camp a sole tactic, but I think there's value in holding a position or maintaining a prime tactical vantage point.

Also, killcams are pretty common place. With team work and good strategy, campers do so at their own great risk, I reckon.

This from a guy that never broke 20 in COD4, though.

In Team Fortress 2, they amde the new Harvest maps horridly easy to spawn camp, for pyros and demomen. Each room has literally two small alleys aside the doors perfect for hiding and/or not letting the people leave their spawns.

Unless you're exploiting glitches or just being a COMPLETE cheapass, I don't think camping is all that bad. Plus, as everyone gets more used to the maps the spots to camp will become really well known and won't be as exploited.

Plus, with time most people who use exploits like that will move on to the next FPS that's released with any sort of hype.
