My name is Matt and I am a doctoral psychology student that plays and reads about videogames. A lot. I have high hopes for the games industry in terms of the application of the medium to less escapist entertainment means. I also like disagreeing with people on the internet because anonymity is awesome.
I will play any kind of videogame but I mainly play action and adventure games, although I have been known to play the occasional racing game and whatever whacked out genreless DS/Wii game that is thrown at me. Typically, the less formula-based and cookie-cutter the game, the more I like it. For some reason I have a dislike for RTS games and turn based RPGs.
To me, the best games allow for freedom, not so much the "you have three different missions to choose from" freedom. I like games that give me choices in how "levels" are defeated providing a different experience each time (GTA, Hitman, Mercenaries). I also like games that let me make real decisions that effect the outcome of the game, not basic decisions that simply keep me alive until the next prescribed story element becomes apparent (Deus Ex). That isn't to say I don't sometimes enjoy the force-fed completely linear game (Mario, Metroid, Zelda, Castlevania).

One game escaped the attention of many gamers this E³ (why do I have the alt code for minature 3's memorized?). That game is Infamous.
Unfortunately, people are ignoring it for a reason. The trailer is made of suck. Well, most of it anyway. First, the game is dark, and not in theme, either. I can make out more detail with my eyes closed. Granted, this is a youtube video, but it is still damned dark. Also, the character models look rather simplistic, including the main character. The art direction as a whole seems uninspired. Nothing particularly interesting happens in the video, either.
So the game will suck, right?
Watch the video again. I have some awesome I need to point out. First of all, this trailer begins with quite possibly the most badass quote ever. Deep, provocative, and very telling of what the game will entail.
Now listen to the video again. Hear that woman? She sounds hot, right?
As if this weren't enough evidence to prove how awesome this game will be, let me reveal a little more. This is an experpt from the Gamespot interview.
I would like to point out that this developer/producer/I'm too lazy to check is very excited to be working on an original title. This excites me as well. It is also worth noting that this guy seems to care very much about his team and finds pride in what he does. These are good signs and are much better than the other signs game companies are often fond of.
Lastly, I will point out the most conclusive bit of evidence with regard to how awesome Infamous is going to be. Behold:
Seriously, Sucker Punch kicks ass. Keep an eye on this one, I will be proven right.
So you're a super-powered tough guy and the morality pendelum swings between good and evil? Just how evil can you be, I wonder? I hope it's moustache twirlingly evil.
i knew it would be totally awesome as soon as they compared it to crackdown, crackdown was awesome...even though i only got to play it on bros 360 for awhile all games like that WILL=totally awesome
Who says the trailer sucks? I thought it was fucking awesome. Y'know, "Kane and Lynch" awesome, with the brilliant music and the anti-hero and the gripping storyline and the delicious visuals and the blowing up of shit and the moral decisions and so on and so forth and also cocks. I was running out of ways to use "and".
I think it's going to be the best under appreciated title to come out of E3, and there's a part of me imagining a developer being all excited about the game, who finally gets to show his game at E3, looking forward to all the praise that is going to go into his hard work. And then "the trailer is made of suck"... wtf? I can't think of anything more deflating!
Well, rotting tits go to anyone who disagrees with me. Not because they're right or wrong, but because I don't like the idea of people suffocating quality and uniqueness out of the market.
The trailer doesn't suck so much as it does little to incite excitement about the game. I would have been more excited about the game if the trailer didn't exist. You seem to feel differently, however, which is fine.
Props to them for using obviously in-game footage, though!
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Check it out and see if that alleviates some of your concerns.
