Chris Kohler with
Wired was able to get his hands on Silicon Knights action RPG Too Human (near final build) this past weekend and while he appeared to have enjoyed some of the time spent, his assessment is rather “meh”. According to Chris,
”Too Human has a lot of redeeming qualities, but it isn't for everyone". From frustrating and/or repetitive gameplay to the ridiculously short “epic RPG” campaign, this Too Human preview is summed up by this:
But for that sort of player who enjoys playing through a game once to see the story and get the experience, Too Human will end long before its time and with not nearly enough payoff for all the story exposition. And it's an uneven 10 hours at best…” Ouch.
I actually had this game on my radar as I am a huge fan of Eternal Darkness and SK in general. Unfortunately with Too Human, Denis Dyack has, IMO, come off a little like Julian Eggebrecht defending LAIR. Anyone out there looking forward to this game? Is 10hrs (2hrs longer than Heavenly Sword) a deterrent?
It wasn't on my "buy" list but if I think I can rent it and finish it in a week then I surely will.
Epic rpg? An "rpg" should be at least a 20hr+ play through.
I see no excuse for this especially with the ammount of time they had to make the damn thing.
I'm still interested.
Plus 10 hours in Co-Op is LONG not short. It is longer than Gears of War.
Regardless, 10 hours is too short for an RPG. It's fine for an FPS game that has multiplayer as well, but for a single player only game? No.
I always look forward to the 60+ hrs of gameplay from my RPGS... hell sometimes 140+ hrs (Final Fantasy 12, defeated every boss and every side quest).
Oh well, I wont be playing this anyways... but it sure is a shame.
Does nobody remember the days of trying to unlock Hunk and Tofu in Resident Evil and trying to get the S ranks for completing the game in under 2 hours and 30 minutes?
Anyone? Perhaps not.
A lot of games are extremely flexible in how long they take to complete.
Again, using Mass Effect as an example, I know it took me 54 hours to complete the first time through, then 20 subsequently, then finally 8 hours.
The same goes with games like Diablo 2. You can be rushed through all five acts in a couple hours... yet end up playing the single character for easily over 100.
Isn't this game roughly modeled in the same way? Single or Co-Op playthroughs of multiple zones farming items and XP?
I usually end up logging in about double the hours in any game then what reviewers say. (ie pokemon Diamond & Pearl. Most people said it was 30-40 hours... I'm getting my 3rd badge, And I've already got 30 hours in it. And this is my second playthrough lol).
