iTunes meets Ebay: LittleBigPlanet will allow users to charge for their created content
The Wrath | 3:42 PM on 07.20.2008 35 comments

Via PS3faboy

David Reeves, CEO of SCEE: "What we're trying to do with LittleBigPlanet is almost iTunes meets eBay in the sense that once an individual or a developer has qualified by producing certain levels or certain add-ons, they will then be able in the future to exchange these and make money out of them,"

Does this open the door for lawsuit heaven, fan service to the 12th degree or both? With Helgast Sackboys and Kratos Sackboys surfacing on the net, what is the likelihood we'll see someone create the first level from Megaman or Donkey Kong? Would people even want to play a Chris Redfield Sackboy running through a mansion inspired RE level?

Wow, this is the first tasteless bit of news for LBP that I've heard.

I'm hoping this "qualification" stage for charging is incredibly rare, or else the community aspect (the main aspect) seems much more sour.

its a new thing that we hardly know anything about and you cheeseholes before me don't like it, wait for it to come out before you diss the concept, it has the potential to make you fuckin money and you thing its bad? this may have the opportunity to entice really genius content from owners and developers.

@Qraze: ?

I have no intention of selling my creations. I do consider the notion tasteless, regardless of its "potential".

To quote the most sensible comment in the linked article:
"Besides, charging for content defeats the purpose of LBP for me anyway. It's Play, Create Share. Not Play, Create, Sell."

Hopefully everyone recognizes this as a bad idea and now matter how great their level may be, they won't charge people for it.

Part of the problem (when money is involved) is entitlement. If you can sell it do you truly own it or is it still Sony's property?

it won't change the sharing part but if you created a level and got around 500k downloads and sony asked you if you would like to sell, you wouldn't? everybody in the world would sell their stuff. its inevitable to me, so i'm going to support it. watch everybody talking down about it become hypocrites when that option becomes available. it also opens up 1st and 3rd party developers to actually make real content. imagine castlevania content from konani, or a kingdom hearts level from square. i just think its a great idea as long as i can still share my stuff w/ friend at no charge than i have no problem.

We're not complaining about making money, we're complaining about having to spend money to buy something that should be free.

Besides, I would never try to make money off of something like this. That's just tasteless.

??? The game was touted as featuring detailed ranking systems for sorting and filtering shared content, all under the slogan of "Play, Create Share".
I didn't expect to see price tags associated with the highest rated items when looking for the best.

From this point on, microtransactions are the standard, I guess.

Oh jesus.

I'm not even going to argue against that failed logic.

I honestly would have expected you to advocate completely free distribution considering that is an element I consider to be one of the PS3's strengths in certain aspects.

No, that was at The Wrath's comment, quoting my "optional" stance.

If the charges for LBP are optional, then I'll choose to download them for free. If I can't do that, then it's not optional.

I doubt this will be like "Oh, I see you made a cardboard box. How much would you like to charge for that?", but it's definitely nothing positive.

Exactly! I understand they'll only be charging for the highest-rated items... but for a game that was touted as having an intricate community-driven shared-content element, placing price tags no those highest-rated items seems pretty lame to me.

I'm glad I don't have to pay for the most well written c-blogs on Destructoid, even though they may be incredibly well written and the person is earning money for it.

I hope a community based game means just that, for and by the community. I always imagined a more shared experience. I suppose I was being naive. I never thought it would become commercialized. Ick. Let's hope not......please.

I like Qraze's idea. If it hits a certain download level, then why not include it in a "community pack" or something.... but then again Echochrome can offer it free.

Depends what custom crap we can put in, otherwise count me out for buying user content. HL2 has plenty of free total conversion mods that kick ass, so there's no reason for LBP to sell a few levels.

I agree - offering it in a "community pack" sounds great!

Why does that have to cost money? It shouldn't, it's community driven...

Wasn't there a similar idea with the 360, where users would be able to sell custom content they created? Thank god that never saw the light of day.

dude says it straightforward " once an individual or a developer meet a certain levels and or add ons". that's saying the best and most unique to me.

Seriously, that's kind of messed up. Because you know Sony is going to get a cut of that money. So in essence, Sony is trying to make you their employee instead of their customer.

I don't like this.

I wouldn't compare this to XNA because those games are inherently designed to be sold.

LBP is supposed to be community driven using a level building set for everyone. The "premium content" should be no different in distribution than the rest of the creations.

Clearly, we don't know how rampant this will be. Saying the content system is ruined is obviously a premature hyperbole, but the extent of this problem is directly proportionate to how many top items are marketed to be sold...

The problem with something like this is that there a couple of ways to do this right, but unlimited ways to do this wrong.
