With Internet rumors running amuck these days, screens of Sony’s upcoming trophy system have appeared, along with details regarding the system and firmware 2.4. One of Microsoft’s proverbial feathers in the cap has been the Achievement system and cumulative Gamerscore. For almost 3yrs, 360 owners have enjoyed the lil pat on the back developers had given by using the system and rewarding gamers for the obvious…playing. If the rumors are true, Sony’s trophy system sounds like it’s finally catching up in terms of features and may actually have a more robust scoring/accomplishment/achievement system. Instead of a simple total score “I have more points than you” setup, PS3 owners will have 4 types of trophies (Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum) to try and unlock.
Upon unlocking an undisclosed number of trophies, that cumulative total will then increase your “gamer card” a level. The more levels you gain, the more trophies you must unlock. Each trophy will be worth a certain number of points and each game will only contain a certain number of each trophy. Gamers will also be able to compare “scores” with other PSN users, although specifics were not disclosed. If these rumors/leaks turn out to be true, has Sony innovated on a scoring system that 360 owners have enjoyed and praised or merely half heartedly copied an existing setup? Now that Sony has prepared the PS3 to take the 360 head on with its services and features, is it too late to matter? With an ever increasing library of games, more 360 “exclusives” making their appearance on the platform, more titles with PS3 lead SKU, HOME and the competition’s lineup’s looking rather “meh”, what can Microsoft do to counter this? Should they even care?
I don't think Achievements are an important factor in what console you choose though, so Microsoft shouldn't care much about this.
MS really can't do anything to counter this, it's up to the games to do that, but by the way in which MS is implementing possible motion control and that stoooooopid avatar system, akin to Mii's, it seems as they will likely shoot theselves in the foot, the average consumer is confused enough this gen.
Sony IS building brigdes to combat the competition, this 'trophy' system does have it's advantages, but don't expect it to really make an impact on us, I for one could give less of a shit about this, I play my ps3 for the games, not to be a fucking achievement whore. This is merely a bonus, and the ps3 has yet to fully show it's potential.
The 360 on the other hand, at the moment, is leading the way.
I now play games more than once because there...fuck it. I like achievement points. I think they bring something awesome to games, and I hope Sony can do the same.
/talking about cheevos every again
Personally I could less about achievements or trophies. MS has done a good job of establishing their achievement and gamerscore system. Lots of people enjoy it and that is great for them. There are probably PS3 owners who want the system,so it is good that Sony is trying to provide it for them. Whether it is Sony, MS or Nintendo, if they can give their customers what they want that is great.
That could have been a rumor though, so don't quote me on that.
Y'know what? That is an intriguing question, I got some old ps3 games recently, I wonder if the devs will release a patch in order to enable this, I hope not, there really is nothing worst than sitting through endless patch install screens, I have over 20 ps3 games, I hope to god sony somehow activates the system of trophies with the corresponding game(s), WITHOUT, the need for further patches.
I think games this year will support them, but last year I am not so sure about
It's just nice to get a reward for doing random stuff and/or fully exploring a game etc
If MS did this, I know I'd always choose my 360 for games.
If Sony did this I would be HOOKED !!!
Home is another application I think will cease to be interesting to the average gamer after a couple weeks of playing around in it. The integration with games they announced a few months back does sound cool but everything else seems like Myspace the game.
Calling Msoft's lineup being meh seems a little harsh since Sony doesn't have much left for this year. Sony has blown their load for the year with MGS4. Sure LBP will come out and I'll buy it but I'm still not sure if there will be enough creative people to make good levels to keep it going after a few months. I'm sure Resistance 2 will do great but I've still got a sour taste in my mouth from how boring and over-hyped the first game was. Microsoft on the other hand has Too Human, Left 4 Dead, Fable 2, Gears of War 2, and Banjo Kazooie all coming out this year and possibly Alan Wake (if only) and Halo Wars as well. It's a murderers row of lineups.
unless it proves I can shoot down the UT3 Jesus...
And as with Bioshock, it'll be the 360 version that gets the press more.
Surely you know the reason why I want in game XMB is to organize Friday Night Fights better as well as gaming get togethers with your friends, Hmmm?
