Great write up. I have similar feelings.
Right now, it feels a lot more like Playstation All-Stars is a game Sony thought they should make, not one they wanted to make. Nothing about it seems inspired. The fact that they are pulling out old characters like Parappa doesn't feel like a tribute. It feels like exploitation of our nostalgia.
If Sony really valued Parappa, why haven't they published a game in the series for ten years? Do they value any of their brands, or are they all just interchangable cash cows to the company? Remember, unlike Nintendo, who is run by artists and game developers, Sony is run by business men and hardware developers.
I think that really shows in the Playstation brand in general, and this game in particular. There are some really great Sony exclusive characters, but almost none of them were created by Sony. From Parappa to Nathan Drake, they are all 2nd party created games.
When you take a bunch of characters that were developed by multiple 2nd parties and throw them together in one title, they aren't going to match. It's going to look like a forced cash grab. That's the biggest challenge that I think Playstation All-stars faces at the moment.
That said, I'm still buying the game day one, just for Parappa. Just because i'm aware that Sony is abusing my nostalgia reflex doesn't mean I can stop it from working.

The game definitely took inspiration from SB but all this accusations of it being a "carbon-copy, plagiarism, and Sony should be ashamed, Nintendo should sue ect" when previews of the game have stated that while it does look like SB it does not play like SB at all is fucking retard and anyone that is making those accusations for Nintendo is a fucking tool. Its fine to ignore if it looks took like SB for you (but I think everyone should give it a chance since mostly like you have not played it yet) or if the characters dont appeal to you. But despite popular beliefe there are people that do love these characters. This game is made by and for Playstation fans.
Anyway I think the game has potential to do things that SB can't do. Sony has characters that are far more violent and come from far more mature (and when I mean mature I mean rated M game) games and when a character like this (kratos) is matched up with a cartoonish character like Parappa you get something with a absurdity and surreal level that even SB can't match (except for Snake). Hopefully Superbot recognizes and uses this to make the game as absurd as possible as possible. I want direct conversations with Kratos and Parappa, or Drake and Parappa.
And direct competitor for Smash Bros is a good thing anyway. Maybe this time Nintendo will make a working online mode. (and P.S I myself love Smash Brothers)

Great blog! Im trying to be hopeful but this definitely feels like a lost opportunity. My first time seeing this was on the dtoid youtube channel and I seriously thought that it was just a Wii mod for Smash Bros made by a fan anticipating the official announcement.
The visual representation is pretty much 1 to 1 with Smash Bros which seems to really downplay the clash of art styles that this game should have been going for. Most of Nintendo's characters are just odd shapes with bright colors which works really well with the pulled out camera and arena style environments. Doing this with Sony characters something gets lost in translation.
Whats the point of having Parappa and Killzone characters rendered in the same 3d cartoony style? Consistency perhaps, but thats totally taking away from what should be making this game special. Consistency is the last thing I want in a insane stupid fun game.
The whole appeal of Parappa VS Radec is that you have one character with high rez textures and top of the line mo-cap squaring off with a PSX era 2d paper dog that uses QTE's to rap. Trying to make both those styles blend instead of clash kills the fun, and pulling the camera out so far that you cant tell the difference between Kratos or any other humanoid makes the whole affair pointless.
Its looking to just be a glorified Smash Bros mod. The sad part is that even if it is well made, fun, and on par with Smash Bros(or better) its never gonna be that surreal clash of art and tech spanning across three generations of Sony consoles.

SmithyX: Sorry if it came off as hostile. But accusations of plagiarism are really really retarded especially if you have not even played the game. It would be plagiarism if they had characters that looked like mario, luigi, ect, the same exact stages, music, ect. Anyone with a fucking mind can see that this is no where near plagiarism. They took inspiration and are making their own spin. If you cant deal with that then you have some problems.
@stop spoilers - I hate to be that guy, but have you played Dissidia? I've put more hours into it than any Smash Bros game, probably more than MVC2 as well. The kill mechanic is essentially that you meter your way to a kill, though you could build smaller amounts of Bravery to wear down HP, it's often viable to build bravery to make a kill in one HP attack.
All-Star takes that concept, abbreviates it by removing HP entirely and gives it three tiers of meter like a MVC2/3. It's not only a creatively bankrupt design, it's also has the potential for lots of abuse. The game will ride on whose tiers are the strongest or could just lead to long, drawn out and potentially dull encounters.
If they grant the option to turn items off, then even more boring encounters since "competitive" types freak at the sight of items and prefer the drudgery of exploiting novelist mechanics.

Well Like I said you dont know that until you play the game. And we dont know what other modes they have planned. and yes I have played and enjoyed Dissidia but the two are not very comparable from what I have seen. I think you give the game a chance. Hopefully they bring out a beta for the game.
Forget about the gameplay and your favorite characters hitting each other for a second and just look at the game.
It is not a Playstation game. This is not a Sony game. Its a Nintendo game with Playstation costumes. Its not a love letter to Playstation fans, its a slap in the face in many respects.
The previews are saying nice things because, in general, that's hat previews do. Its objective reporting - previews deal in concept, not execution. It generally has to be that way. Its not a true-hands on. Don't expect the same kind of mercy when this game lands in the hands of a reviewer.
But perhaps Holmes is right - Maybe Sony is just too corporate to appreciate what they created. Their music and movie divisions have had a knack for making that known, the way they fought MP3 and Streaming tooth and nail before finally conforming. It could very well be they don't value the gaming experiences they created, either.
But my SE example does prove corporations can value their creations, sometimes too much, but still. They're not run by game designers and artists like Nintendo is and still seem to maintain the respect Nintendo does for what's created.

How on gods earth is it a nintendo game with playstation characters. That is fucking pants on head retarded. Nintendo does not have exclusive rights to certain types of fucking games. And to say its a slap in the face is fucking retard too. And it is a love letter to playstation fans they have been clamoring for this for year and they are finally getting it. Jesus christ.
And too be clear it fine not to like the game for whatever reason (though the game should be given a fair shot). But to tell a group what they should feel about this game is wrong. All of the playstation fans I have talked too are pretty excited and to ruin their fun because you think they should feel a certain way make you look like this.

I think it's still way too early to discredit the game but that's just me. I'm sure if Sony was making the exact same games for the last 25 years people would be more receptive to their brawler. I'm optimistic for it but it still looks very rough. Definitely needs more personality. It needs that late-90s attitude Sony used to have.
In all fairness, the HD resolution does help a lot. I hated that it was often difficult to tell what was going on in SSBB (New Pork City for example). Nintendo knocked it out of the park with that game though.

CelicaCrazed: yea the game needs some polishing in the visuals. That, the horrible logo, and horrible name are pretty much the only problems I have with the game right now until I play the game myself. The patapons in the hades stage looked great though. I hope they make more absurd levels like this. A gran turismo/twisted metal or whipeout would be amazing.
@SS - The more I read your comments, the more I question your retention for what I wrote. In fact, everyone seems to see my point here except you.
Playstation games have a different soul than Nintendo games. I was there from the start with Nintendo back in the 80s and also right there when Playstation began. They have their own distinct methodologies and histories.
When I think of Nintendo, I think of arcades, the 80s and 90s, I think platforming and quirky non-sequiter designs. Smash Bros. tends to embody that history and celebrates those things.
Playstation has only ever been a console. It's arcade roots are minimal, mostly when it was already fading from glory because of consoles growing in popularity. Sony IPs have a teen-to-adult audience, it pushed the Mature game industry, brought us dual analog controls and championed a more cinematic approach to game design.
Different soul.
You want to boil it down to your standard of "fun" and proclaim that Sony has a right to make a game like this. No one is saying it can't be fun or that Sony doesn't have the right to do this. Please pay attention to what peopla are saying and don't forcefeed them the things they're not saying.
I look at this game and it just doesn't look or feel right. Its like a boy trying to wear his father's clothes. Yeah, he can wear them, but it just doesn't fit him.

The point that you made is what struck me the most about this game. It's forcing a bunch of 3D characters to fight in a 2D plane. It made sense for Smash Bros, but here it just doesn't feel right. I really feel like this should have been some sort of 3D brawler.
Scissors: I dont feel it has to make sense at all especially since you have kratos fighting prappa. And that kind of applies to some characters in SB. If anything the more absurd and surreal the game becomes the better. I want twisted metal cars destroying Gran Turismo cars or Gran Turismo cars racing Wipeout ships. And if the game does not have fully voiced conversations or cutscenes in the single player I will be disappointed. I do agree that it could have worked well as a 3D brawler but Superbot decided on the 2D plane.
There doesn't need to be a reason for a crossover, but good crossovers make an effort to have complimentary thems for certain characters meeting at specific points - as I pointed out with Batman and Spiderman, Pikachu and Samus and Kratos and Rau. Jak and Ratchet have some things in common, Sly and Gabriel have some things in common
In MVC3 you had Deadpool and Dante going up against each other in the trailer, Viewtiful Joe dressed cosplaying Captain America in the credits.
You know a game where two IPs had nothing in common?
Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. On side has heroes that kill to survive, the heroes of the other side are ethically opposed to killing. Both had to compromise what their IPs represented to such a degree it just didn't work.
But in WB's head it as "Comic BooK vs. Fighting Game sells!"
and the game was shit because they didn't stop to think or treat these IPs with respect.
So there doesn't need to be a reason for a crossover, but when you do cross things over, they should make sense. Zack Fair and Hercules are like peas in a pod in Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep and finding common ground and strong contrasts is sentential when characters from two different properties meet - otherwise you're just insulting fans on both sides of it.

I dont think they need to make sense at all. I actually think that the stark difference in sony's characters is the thing that really sets it apart from smash bros and that is something Nintendo can't do unless they get those really violent characters as third party characters. The thought of Kratos a crazy violent psychopath fighting Parappa a cartoon, flat, rapping dog is so insane and ridiculous that it works for me. I want the game to be a absurd as possible.
I have to say, I'm really on the fence about this game. My instincts tell me "It's a Smash Bros. clone! Burn it!" but my reason tells me "Give it a chance!" I've been playing Smash Bros. since the very beginning -- and the same goes for a lot of people here, I bet -- so to say that my opinion's tainted is...well, an understatement.
But I wouldn't have even considered a 3D brawler if you hadn't suggested it. If not like Power Stone, then something like Def Jam: Fight for NY. You would think that a fighting game with the EA logo and a bunch of rappers going up against each other would be pretty lame; it turned out to be one of the most amazing, over-the-top experiences I've ever had. There was a brutality to it, but also a silliness you'd expect from such boastful artists. (If you haven't seen it before, do yourself a favor and check out the Blazin' Moves.) What I'm getting at is that Smash Bros. has a style, and FFNY has a style. With this game? I'm just not feeling it.
Also, I have to agree with Stop Spoilers: this game needs a name change. I guess we could call it PAS:BR, but...come on. Are they calling it PlayStation All-Stars because they intend to use it as the start of a new franchise? Are we going to see Kratos in a kart racer?
